"Inequality is through the roof. A bona fide tech oligarchy is ascendent, buffeted by leverage provided by AI. Its data centers, which bring few jobs and hike electricity bills, are enraging communities on the right and the left. Slop is everywhere. AI-generated art and text is undercutting creatives, powered by pirated, non-consensually ingested work. Employers from Amazon to Block to Duolingo to Meta are firing tens of thousands of workers and citing AI as the reason. AI may one day cure cancer, we’re told; great, even if we believe that, who will be able to afford the treatment?
That’s the anger fueling the anti-AI violence. To the handwringing AI industry insiders blaming doomers and poor messaging, ordinary people are saying: Wake up. We have good reason to hate AI and the people who profit from it. And yes, as people get desperate, as young people increasingly feel like AI elites have mortgaged their future, as residents who vote to regulate AI or ban local data center projects only to see their will overridden in favor of industry interests—well how do you expect them to feel? What do you expect? There is a distinct risk of further escalation."

"After No Kings, Indivisible, one of the lead organizers of the "No Kings" protest, is pivoting to building support for the May Day Strong walkouts and actions. They intend to use their massive email lists and organizers for May Day Strong. The May Day Strong coalition is calling for "No Work, No School, No Shopping" on May 1st.
“Coming off the heels of the massive energy from the No Kings mobilizations, people are ready to take action and keep fighting for a democracy of, by, and for the people,” says Indivisible Co-Founder Leah Greenberg, whose organization started the No Kings protest. “On May 1, Indivisibles will be joining people across the country with a clear message: we demand a government that invests in our communities, not one that enriches billionaires, fuels endless war, or deploys masked agents to intimidate our neighbors.”
While many have long dismissed a May Day general strike as a pipe dream, it seems more likely in the wake of the Minnesota General Strike and the energy of the "No Kings Movement."

Excited to see Kristian Williams has a new book out - check it out at your local bookstore or community infoshop.
"An expert chronicler of police abuse of power, in Policing the Progressive City Kristian Williams now turns his focus to law enforcement in his own backyard. It is the city’s progressive veneer, this book argues, that allows the repressive core of its policing machinery to function so effectively, weathering scandals, co-opting critics, and periodically renewing police legitimacy with well-timed and carefully limited reforms."

"While these charges represent a new weapon of the state against those struggling against US fascism and ICE terror, they are just another chapter in the US government’s long history of using courts, police, and deportation against leftists, the colonized, and people of color fighting for liberation. From the Palmer Raids of the 1900s, which led to the deportation of hundreds of immigrant anarchists, socialists, and trade unionists; to the trials of the Chicago 7 and the Panther 21 during the 1960s, and to the modern day with the J20 defendants, and now, the Prairieland 9.
And just as these defendants join a long tradition of the American empire jailing people for their politics, we too must join the long tradition of solidarity with political prisoners. It was only through solidarity that the verdict of the Chicago 7 was overturned on appeal, that the Panther 21 were acquitted, and that the charges of the J20 defendants were dropped."

"The risks are real. Customs and Border Protection agents have the authority to examine travelers’ devices. In June, for instance, federal agents denied a Norwegian tourist entry to the U.S. after looking through his phone. (Authorities claim they turned him away for admitted drug use; he says it was over a meme depicting Vice President JD Vance as a bald baby.)
Immigration and Customs Enforcement have already started targeting travelers, with agents in plain clothes forcefully detaining a mother in front of her young daughter at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday after a tip from the Transportation Security Administration.
If you’re flying, take these steps to reduce the likelihood that your sensitive information is compromised at the airport."

"Philosophy professor Idris Robinson has sued Texas State University officials, asserting that the school violated his constitutional rights by ending his contract after he gave a talk on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict off-campus in another state where a fight broke out, the Guardian has learned.
Robinson’s complaint names the school’s president, Kelly Damphousse, three top college officials, and the school’s board of regents. It concerns one of the more drawn-out and unusual cases of a university punishing faculty for expressing views on Israel and Palestine, following a social media campaign against Robinson.
A tenure-track professor with four years of stellar performance reviews, according to the complaint, Robinson has been told he will no longer have a job in May, for a talk he gave two years earlier at a North Carolina anarchist book fair, in no way affiliated with the university.
Robinson, the only Black philosophy professor at Texas State, said he filed the complaint because he “wants them to fulfill their side of the contract” – referring to his performance reviews and tenure track – and “to fight back against the prohibition of any discourse on Palestine that isn’t part of the mainstream political class."

"This wasn’t the only allusion to cults made during the trial. Indeed, the most consequential piece of the case against the Prairieland defendants is how prosecutors defined what counts as “conspiracy.” With the outcome of this trial potentially creating a new weapon with which the Trump administration can bludgeon its political opponents—sidestepping the First Amendment—prosecutors effectively concocted a “criminal enterprise” through innuendo and partial truths. Before the trial, the FBI described one defendant’s home as a “commune,” presumably because the group of friends living there together were pooling cash for the mortgage. "

"Leqaa Kordia has been jailed for nearly a year, despite a judge twice ordering her release, simply for protesting the genocide that took the lives of nearly 200 of her relatives. A 33-year-old Palestinian woman who has lived in the U.S. for nearly a decade, Leqaa was among hundreds arrested at a Columbia University protest in 2024 calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Charges were quickly dropped, but nearly a year later, the Department of Homeland Security targeted Leqaa, spying on her and interrogating her friends and family. Leqaa was detained in March 2025, and she’s been held in a Texas immigration facility ever since.

"Donald Trump’s administration made a show out of arresting a Minneapolis man they called an “antifa domestic terrorist,” asserting that he was being charged with threatening ICE agents.
However, the administration appears to have arrested this self-described “antifa” member, Kyle Wagner, in large part for allegedly “cyberstalking” Jayden Scott, a well-known right-wing agitator. Scott has been in Minneapolis as a counter-protester boosting ICE, and publicly crowed about Renee Nicole Good’s murder in Minneapolis, screaming, “We executed one of you.” Scott also filmed himself standing in front of a reporter’s apartment door in an overt attempt at intimidation. The reporter successfully filed for a protective order against Scott, court records show.

"Misogyny and the scapegoating of women are not new territory for Fuentes, who helped popularize the phrase “your body, my choice.” However, his recent rhetoric feels especially unnerving following the murder of Renée Good. Good’s killing by a DHS agent was met with dismissals or mockery from right-wing commentators who critiqued her queerness, perceived disobedience, and physical similarity to women whose attitudes had displeased them. In a moment when the extrajudicial execution of a woman in broad daylight has been met with arguments that she had it coming, the construction of women as an enemy of the fascist movement — as figures in need of criminalization and containment — is particularly disturbing.
While we are not facing the imminent mass detention of women, this escalating language feels dangerous in our increasingly volatile political climate. So how seriously should we take Fuentes right now? And what does rhetoric like this reveal about the broader trajectory of the movement he’s trying to shape?"

"Deals for warehouses near Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, and Byhalia, Missouri, have also fallen through. In each case, warehouse owners faced protests and mounting pressure. In some jurisdictions, backlash to ICE warehouses have come in the worst sort of NIMBY variety — including complaints from Republicans who do not want immigrant detainees brought to their town en masse. Concerns about water and sewage systems and economic strains in remote areas also abound. But if local self-interest becomes a barrier to the expansion of Trump’s deportation regime, that’s no bad thing, given the urgent need to hold back Trump’s deeply unpopular but otherwise unrestrained forces.

"The story of Korean adoption to the United States therefore involves more than the charity and good-heartedness of American prospective parents, being borne of the interests of a client state and an imperial power. It lifts the mask of democratic capitalism to expose not only empire but the contingency of personhood as conferred by the state, especially when the state in question is beholden to another more powerful and better armed.
Adoptees are asked for gratitude. And surely to be grateful for what one has received is a virtue for everyone, adopted or not. One might be grateful for guidance and gifts, for true family and friends, for compassion and solidarity and kindnesses and the million small things which balance out the difficulties and pains of the world.
But as adoptees, we must remember, remind, embody a simple proposition: we owe the empire nothing."

Text from letter handed out in #Minneapolis to anti-ICE rapid response volunteers:
To Our Beloved Guardian Angels,
In these times of profound trial, when darkness sought to engulf our community, you emerged as beacons of unwavering light. When fear gripped our hearts and the very fabric of our existence trembled under the shadow of masked agents-when we were hunted, chased, and made to feel as strangers in the place we call home- you stood tall. You stood with us.
With courage that defied the chill of winter winds and compassion that warmed the coldest nights, you became our shield. You left the comfort of your daily lives, your workplaces, your routines, to stand guard at our doors. You brought us the gift of warning-the loud sirens that pierced the silence of impending danger, giving us precious moments to seek shelter, to protect our children, to preserve our dignity.
You did not merely observe; you acted. You confronted hatred face-to-face. You stood between us and the agents of fear, becoming the voice for the voiceless, the strength for the weary, and the hope for the hopeless. In your presence, we found sanctuary. In your resolve, we found resilience.
Your bravery is a testament to the boundless capacity of the human spirit. You stood against the tides of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and every form of prejudice that seeks to divide humanity.
You embodied the highest ideals of human dignity, honor, and solidarity. You reminded us-and the world-that America's true strength lies in its embrace of those who seek refuge, its promise of freedom, and its unwavering stand for justice.
Your sacrifice will echo through generations. We will tell our children, and they will tell theirs, of the guardian angels who stood tall when hate knocked at our doors. Your legacy is etched in the heart of our community-a living history of compassion without limits, courage without borders.
You are the reason hope still shines. You are the reason America remains a home for the persecuted, a land where freedom rings true. We love you. We honor you. We will never forget what you have done.
May God bless you, protect you, and keep you close. Your light will forever guide us.
With Eternal Gratitude, The Community You Saved

"In addition to their latent insurgent potential, the Twin Cities’ rapid response networks signal the possible resurgence of a proletarian civic life independent of the mainstream two-party system and the institutions of a decrepit civil society and left-wing milieu. In the suburbs especially, thousands of working-class people have glimpsed the prospect of a more meaningful experience of community, following decades of atomization and a decaying social fabric. The formation of these networks, from Minneapolis and Saint Paul to the suburbs, and even into parts of the exurbs and rural hinterland, has provided a rich supply of oxygen and nutrients to the formerly comatose brain of working-class civic life, spurring the formation of new socio-neural connections. These proto-political networks harbor the potential to mature into class institutions tasked with coordinating sustained oppositional political and economic action, while restoring a social fabric promised, but never delivered, by so many astroturfed campaigns that too often accomplish little more than channeling our longing for collective agency into transferable email lists."

"The events of January 31st and February 1st were an escalation of violence that has been ongoing in Portland and across the country. But what’s clearer than ever is the Portland community’s unshakable resolve to resist and stand in solidarity with one another.
Portland's resolve is stronger than ever. In the face of escalating brutality, people are still standing strong, dancing through the gas, and refusing to back down. Absolute 🔥 from @npub105j…0yvz.
"A major Somali shopping center called Karmel Mall closed for the day. Daycare centers were forced to close when their staff demanded the day off. Workers forced a major AT&T call center to close. The biggest nursing home in the Twin Cities metro area held mandatory all-staff meetings to threaten to fire employees who participated, but those scare tactics failed and they faced mass absenteeism. The combined population of Minneapolis and Saint Paul is less than 750,000; that Friday, we saw an estimated 100,000 people take the streets in sub-zero temperatures. It is safe to conclude that at least one out of every eight Twin Cities residents took part in the general strike.
The leaderless character of the resistance to ICE in Minnesota is precisely what has made it effective. The decentralized nature of the rapid response groups has made them durable and agile. The initiative of autonomous fighters in the neighborhoods has enabled people to rise in revolt every time they have shot or murdered our neighbors. The horizontality of our mutual aid networks makes them opaque to the feds while enabling them to feed, clothe, and care for vulnerable families. No official organization would ever dare to call for the countless acts of bravery by which individuals have collectively propelled this movement forward. The everyday anarchism of the Minneapolis revolution is its greatest strength.
To the extent that we allow top-down forces to take control of the movement, we will compromise its structural integrity and set ourselves up to lose. With so much on the line, we can’t afford to let that happen."

"Twin Cities rapid responders have set up a "filter blockade" at 34th and Cedar and are calling for volunteers and donations. This is a new tactic developing over the last week: community is allowed to pass, but ICE agents are stopped/slowed before they can terrorize our neighbors.
These blockades are a beautiful experiment in improvised community defense. They are easy to start with just a couple friends, and whatever you have lying around.
Let's make the Twin Cities impassible to ICE and all supporting forces."

About a year ago, we announced a hiatus on this project. Due to an outpouring of support, we pushed ourselves to continue, and over the last year, we’re proud of the interviews and roundups we’ve been able to produce.
But as events in the United States have continued to escalate and conditions have grown more dire, it’s clear that IGD does not have the capacity to meet the moment as a hub for grassroots reporting and journalism. In the face of this reality, we feel its important to be clear about our inability to continue, in the hopes that more people can push themselves to build and grow media projects and platforms.
We should all have a sober and clear-eyed view of what is happening. The current administration is attempting to consolidate extreme authoritarian power. People are being silenced and working-class people are being attacked. A police state is being constructed. Conditions are worsening. Inflation and prices are exploding and the entire country feels like it is slipping into dictatorship and economic collapse, as most people struggle to put food on the table.
As corporations and the State consolidate news into fewer hands and the far-Right pushes to silence those who speak out, the need for dynamic and vibrant grassroots media that amplifies working-class voices and gives a platform to social movements is needed now more than ever. We hope those that enjoyed IGD over the years can help in constructing new infrastructure that can help meet our present moment.

"After federal agents deployed tear gas near a Chicago elementary school, community members have banded together to ensure children can come and go safely as the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown continues in the city.
Now, a new line of protection has surrounded students in the Chicago Public Schools system. Armed with whistles and know-your-rights pamphlets, these community volunteers call themselves “guardian angels.” Together, they secure the perimeters of elementary, middle and high schools across the city.
When the call for volunteers went out, 500 community members stepped up, filling more than 1,000 shifts at nearly 100 schools on Chicago’s northwest side. The goal is to ensure students can attend class for an education without fear of a confrontation with ICE.
This “guardian angel” movement has continued to grow, and volunteers have shown up in droves daily at school pick-up and drop-off locations."

"On Saturday, federal agents shot Marimar “La Maggie” Martinez five to seven times in Brighton Park. Yesterday, she walked out of the hospital—bandaged, limping, but alive—flanked by her lawyer, Christopher Parente, and a crowd chanting her name.
That image—a Latina activist standing upright after federal bullets tore through her car and body—belongs to a long ledger of American overreach. CBP called it an “ambush.” Her community calls it what it looks like: an execution that failed.
The government’s story crumbles on contact. Prosecutors claim Martinez rammed a Border Patrol SUV and charged an agent. But Parente told a federal judge he has the body-cam footage, and it shows the opposite: a CBP agent taunting her—“Do something, bitch”—before steering his unmarked vehicle into hers and opening fire. Seven bullets later, Martinez drove herself a mile to a repair shop for help.
That footage exists. It’s time we all see it."

"The past few anti-antifa panics have shown that MAGA has an expansive definition of who constitutes antifa, with everyone even a little left of center liable to be labeled that way. Equating antifa with a “major terrorist organization,” as Trump has, then becomes an excuse for the right to target whomever it pleases, with both state persecution and vigilante violence.
Meanwhile, last week Trump’s Justice Department quietly removed a study online that showed far-right extremists commit “far more” fatal violence than those on the far left, while MSNBC reported that Trump’s campaign to mass-deport millions of immigrants from America has diverted FBI agents from monitoring and prosecuting violent far-right groups.

Probably the best and most sober read on the current situation surrounding the shooting in Utah yet.
"We have let school shootings in America persist long enough that we have created a culture where kids grow up seeing them as a path towards fame and glory. Another consequence of how thoroughly the internet has flattened pop culture, politics, and real life violence. All of it now is just another meme you can participate in to go viral. Made even more confusing by a new nihilistic accelerationist movement that delights in muddying the waters for older people who still adhere to a traditional political spectrum. Many young extremists now believe in a much simpler binary: Order and chaos. And if you are spending any time at all trying to derive meaning from violent acts like this then you are, by definition, their enemy."

They urged residents not to obey in advance, to put up banners and signs resisting the takeover, to speak to their neighbors about what was happening, to organize resistance campaigns while expressing joy and camaraderie, to resist the takeover."
