Note to self: in #iCloud Drive, folders can be considered app data merely by name, even if one never downloaded that exact app anywhere...
(I had a Cryptomator vault created on computer in my iCloud Drive but it was wrongly associated with "Cryptomater 1: Legacy" app which was paid, no longer in the app store, and never bought. iCloud started spamming storage warnings and the file size doesn't seem to match - maybe a partial download? - so I deleted it. Oh well, nothing important though.)

For the former, GitHub Pages. I guess Neocities if you want retro.
For the latter... I actually used Dreamweaver CC more than a decade ago... But with the advent of static site generators and Markdown-based workflows I think visual editors have fallen out of fashion and people now write HTML/CSS by hand. I'd recommend starting from someone else's site's source code, learn by example (including w3school, I guess) and tinker with it. For the record, https://codeberg.org/austinhuang/pages is mine.

If you got good networks IRL then you can skip LinkedIn entirely, but unfortunately we're not such people... It's not about having a complete profile, but if you got things to show off then you gotta let people find your presence (that's how I got referrals after begposting there), though I suppose if one's really cracked then a good GitHub profile can serve the same purpose. Also their job search is more comprehensive in my opinion.

It depends. Does it only have 6 months expiry? Is there a service fee somewhere? Can I convert it to some no-expiry gift card (or online balance) of a business I shop at frequently (assuming I have one at that moment)? If it's not very inconvenient then I'd take the card. Out of curiosity, and since not so many people tried to use #kagi to #translate *from* #LinkedIn speak to English, I decided to test it on an actual LinkedIn post on my feed (happens to be one using "AI" to replace interns): https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7438083732978425856/ . As is the case with nondeterministic LLMs, running on the same text gives me different output each time, which makes it critically unsuitable for translation, but there is irony in feeding that pro-AI crap back at them using the "AI" they love most.

I respectfully disagree, my position on open registration is https://mstdn.party/@austin/116170793613011100 , and we literally do watch new accounts (and provide signals for others) with pretty good response time. I do think that rule-based automated tooling can go a long way and I should work on that. But at the end of the day whether to block us or not is your choice (and your users'), as long as you don't conflate that then we're good.

People do. But it really depends on your reach (hashtags can help a bit), content interestingness, etiquettes like using alt text for images, so on so forth. Also AI-generated images are a negative signal now (some instances forbid them even).

I moved to mstdn.party and became administrator here after leaving mstdn.ca because they fed everyone's email address to mailchimp for fundraising. We maintain a good set of rules and coordinate well with other instances. (I'm Canadian, but the instance is US-based.)

When I saw the report (which had no posts), the account has already deleted all the posts (nor does it have following/followers), I had to refer to a local cache of a remote account with the same username. We suspended the account promptly anyway but this is something to keep in mind.

Unpopular opinion: as an instance administrator I actually agree (minus the overreaction):
1. As a user I overthink what the other side want in that response. There's also fear of rejection.
2. Beyond following rules, I don't see any way to distinguish whether a user's intention is valid or not (not to mention they can lie), especially as a general service provider.
For as long as I can keep eyes on them, my instances are open registration, but ultimately we need automated tooling.

Matrix is decentralized, outside of matrix.org most homeservers, like Mastodon instances, are just run by random online people, so there is little concern on the data front. However Element does offer Matrix as a messaging platform to government entities, including police, for their internal communication.

You can search https://matrixrooms.info, though remember to do your research on the homeserver in the room address before joining, as the list is quite unfiltered; there does seem to be some art rooms but only one functional TTRPG room (the glasgow.social one). Aside from that rollenspiel.chat is a German TTRPG homeserver, though I don't know how active that is.

Element Call has screensharing (but no audio) but your homeserver needs to support it (most public ones do) and your client has to support it (Element Nightly / https://develop.element.io with lab flags, Commet, or Element X; Cinny in near future) and I do not know when they will officially release it (it has been like this for more than 2 years), but I might take a note (or you can PR it). I mention features truthfully (like moderation only through bots) but there may be biases.

You can look at https://joinmatrix.org/guide/matrix-vs-discord/ for a list of feature comparisons. I'd say maybe try out public homeservers before selfhosting? You can then get started with https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy once you've committed. Depending on your users' usage pattern, storage could be an issue though as Matrix is full mesh federation, so maybe ask in support rooms of various homeserver implementations.

To move a Discord community over you'd start manually creating spaces and rooms on the Matrix side, share their addresses, and optionally add a bridge bot between Matrix and Discord users. Public groups are almost never encrypted (Element will warn you against doing so) but being public makes no technical difference. The problem is if you have a group that has tens of (maybe all selfhosted...) homeservers operating under different conditions, with clients operating under different conditions...

It should be said that, at least on Element, changing your account's display name or avatar seems to override all custom nicknames and avatars for rooms... I don't know if it's the case on Cinny but it is something to be aware of. Other than that, yeah, it's the best alternative out there... (See also https://joinmatrix.org.)

Aside from encryption instability (which greatly varies between people), there's a lack of moderation tools for communities (Draupnir exists but not everyone knows about it, and it has its limits). There's also some animosity from the leadership. But still I'd say Matrix is a fair alternative to Discord.

I rarely see it as well (when I do see it, it seems to be federation lag), but I also know that I'm using a well-maintained public homeserver (not matrix.org and not selfhosted), interact with people on other well-maintained public or selfhosted homeservers (yes, I have like a few 50-ish-people encrypted rooms), and have just one session on Element... There's just too many variables and there's a luck factor in getting things right (especially for non-techies).

It really depends; I feel like if you do things right (which is not that hard) then it's not an issue at all. (See also https://mastodon.derg.nz/@anthropy/116042781681334672.) I think the problem is it involves so many variables (especially for selfhosters) that it's impossible to debug (despite Matrix's effort to do so).

Did two mock interviews for two kids preparing for Google round 2 (while I'm yet to hear back from mine - certainly hope I pass!). I often boost jokes, PSAs, and other interesting stuff (mostly images and opinions), but I avoid boosting posts that already have a high boost count (for equity). Honestly, write what you want, don't overthink about reach (once you've done your best practices)...

I tune out most headlines (plus I have my local NPR station as background sound), so I don't usually check online news, but I do become anxious with certain headlines that could directly impact me, for which I doomscroll quite often.

I'm thinking of writing a toy workflow engine that takes in webhook events or RSS articles and executes a series of steps, like manipulating the data and interacting with other REST APIs, but not starting any new container (which is why I wanted something simpler and not involve k8s). Any advice on its feasibility and the architecture? (My use case is to build some automated moderation pipeline for this instance, but I expect other Zapier-like use cases as well.)

Even if you ignore the platform differences - that is, even if we only consider Mastodon and similar implementations - your home instance (which is determined by your values, attributes, etc.) define a "community of instances" which are technically connected but mostly socially separate. For example there's the older mainstream populations that post politics, versus the younger userbase that post memes, etc. which don't often intersect (and sometimes conflicts ensue).

My local public radio station; they have hourly bulletins. Though I admit sometimes I fixate on certain specific headlines (particularly stuff that are immediate, tangible sufferings that could affect me in some way) because of doomerism (ie. that "some way" can be a bit far-fetched)...

I don't "slide into DMs" but I used to try to talk to people on the school bus and occasionally in public transit (provided that they look similar to me...), though it hasn't been really effective. What has been effective in finding "my people" though is joining a cybersecurity club and offering to work for (and with) them. So yeah, you do have to look out for groups that you're interested in.

There are browser extensions that enables interaction buttons on remote instances or have them redirect back to your home instances, like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mastodon-simplified-federation/ .
