Something I always notice in #Mumbai is that women clearly feel much safer here than, say, in #Delhi. The statistics on crime against women back this up too.
What brings about this difference? Only when we identify the cause can we hope to remedy the problem.
The few women I asked and the few web searches I tried couldn't give a definitive answer...so now I turn to Fedi. What do y'all think?

I use #XMPP as my primary medium of communication, be it chat or audio/video calls.
I ask non-geek contacts to install #Quicksy ([Quicksy website](https://quicksy.im)) or #Prāv ([Prāv website](https://prav.app)). If they are averse to phone number registration, I suggest regular [XMPP clients and servers](https://contrapunctus.codeberg.page/the-quick-and-easy-guide-to-xmpp.html#installing-a-client). There's also the [paid hosting and self-hosting](https://contrapunctus.codeberg.page/the-quick-and-easy-guide-to-xmpp.html#select-a-server)
route, and unlike #Matrix it's actually easy and economical to do.

Server A users are not posting or boosting anything that is objectionable to Server B.
But Server A is federating with servers Server B does not like. [1]
*How does this affect Server B in any way?* Or, why would Server B cite this as a reason to defederate from Server A?
Is it merely a case of [association fallacy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_fallacy)? ("Server A federates with Bad Servers, therefore Server A must be a Bad Server.")
Or are there any legitimate problems Server A is causing for Server B?
[1] Usually because they find defederating to be too extreme for most situations, with too much collateral damage to innocent bystanders...so they use other means to block bad users.

I use #XMPP as my sole means of communication (public channels, private groups, private messages, and calls), and consider it to have better foundations than #Signal, #Telegram, and the rest.
For most people, I recommend #Quicksy or #Prāv, which use phone numbers for easy onboarding.
More privacy-conscious people can choose clients and servers which don't require phone numbers. Technical people can self-host private servers using #Snikket, or use paid hosting.

Pushing free software/data and decentralized platforms, and boycotting proprietary software/data and centralized platforms, is not a "philosophical" matter. Or even an "ethical" one. And it's not opposed to "pragmatism".
To choose proprietary software/data and centralized platforms is to choose to get backstabbed and exploited. It's *inevitable*. History has proven it *time and time again.*
**Free software, free data, and decentralized platforms are the ONLY sane and pragmatic choice.**
Proprietary software/data and centralized services are a trap. Have you taken the bait? And are you encouraging others (through network effect) to do the same? 👀

I know many people who are aware of the importance of #FreedomRespecting software, data, and culture - and the related issues of digital sovereignty and privacy.
Paradoxically, a lot of these people also participate in, or even maintain, communities hosted on #nonfree / #proprietary / #restricted or #centralized platforms like #Telegram, #Discord, #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Instagram, #Facebook, #Twitter, #LinkedIn, #Bluesky, #GitHub, and others.
To state the obvious, each community which chooses a proprietary platform - or bridges to it - is also **giving another reason for others to be on that platform.** It's *reinforcing network effect.*
Conversely, if these communities chose to move to free platforms, their members would be forced to move as well. In other words, these communities have *the opportunity to push for change on a massive scale.*
Sure, you have to reach out to people on proprietary platforms, if that's where the majority are. But you **cannot** be stopping there - you **must** have a strategy to move people away from proprietary platforms to free platforms.
To give the example of #OpenStreetMap -
* I announce events on free platforms sooner
* I remind people on proprietary platforms that they should join the free platforms to get notified earlier
* After each event, we invite people to our #XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
* All organizational talk takes place on our XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
* I minimize my participation on proprietary platforms, and communities which bridge to them. The bulk of my activity happens on free platforms.
* I have never submitted data to Mapillary or KartaView, because their clients and servers are proprietary. All my contributions go to #WikimediaCommons and #Panoramax.
So to the people who are choosing - and therefore promoting - proprietary platforms, I ask...
**How do you think things are going to change, if everyone keeps choosing what is easiest for them, and keeps choosing, supporting, and promoting proprietary platforms?**
**What part are *you* playing in making things better? Or are you just going to go with the flow of the world, even if you know it to be wrong?**
They don't like answering these questions.
Instead, I invite them to find the integrity and courage to answer them.
Or, to find the integrity and courage to make the obvious change and do the obvious right thing.
People hate it when I bring this up. Sorry, but my conscience dictates that I speak up for what is right. Silence is complicity, and it gets us nowhere.

My favorite #IndiaFOSS 2025 moments -
Third place - singing a bit of "Trial By Jury" to a bewildered @npub1fsc…jmgv before the start of the #Prav meeting, after he remarked that the seats looked like a court of law. (Likewise, singing a bit of "Gute Nacht" from "Winterreise" for Urbec later.)
Second place - going to the Open Knowledge Initiative table and showing them my libre data work, including [my Wikimedia Commons uploads](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListFiles%2FContrapunctus-1&ilshowall=1), so as to request full time work that involves improving the commons. They gave me a contact...and a spiral notebook! I thanked them and declined it because I don't write on paper at all, but they insisted, so I gave it to @npub1u03…9p0k who is also an open data contributor, and who I know to write on paper.
First place - making a joke which caused @libreinator to roll around on the ground in laughter for a proper minute.

I kinda want a full-face #elastomeric #respirator...it will probably draw even more stares than the half-mask, but it feels good to be insulated from "the outside", and I kinda want the same for my eyes. I also like the idea of applying a dark film to the visor (as documented by @npub1rvz…ay8v on its blog) to hide more of my face.
But I imagine it will be a total PITA to don and doff for drinking water, or eating something, or talking to people...
Surely someone somewhere has tried to make a hydration port for these things?
And what about a little microphone which connects to a Bluetooth speaker to improve communication? (The speaker could be anywhere outside the mask e.g. worn near the neck or chest...)
EDIT: someone privately mentioned that there are respirators with drinking tubes and voice emitters (those were terms I wasn't aware of!), and mentioned the MSA Millennium series. Thanks!
I since noticed that the 3M Ultimate FX and 3M Scott respirators have these features too. (For anyone who needed that information.)

It's always a question of whether the project has the courage to push people to a better direction, or whether it's just going to go with the flow of whatever people are doing. (Packaged as "we have to be where the people are.")
You make an #XMPP channel, make it the sole official chat medium, and help onboard people...and people will use XMPP.
The more the people and projects who do this, the sooner we bring the world to the standard, reliable, modern, and silo-free chat protocol.
(And the more the people who use it, the more funding and developer love the protocol and the implementations will get.)

Even on the night before the party, we were agonizing over the perpetual question - what editor to teach to newcomers?
And after the workshop and the latest mapping party, I think I have a new and improved idea.
1. We always introduce #CoMaps (and earlier Organic Maps) to newcomers, focusing on it as a means of using OSM. But we avoid using its editor - offline data can be confusing and (in the presence of concurrent editors) can more easily lead to duplication.
But if we want people to recommend CoMaps to other, less technical people...they may want the latter to be able to add places without installing another app.
2. I have long admired StreetComplete's gamified interface, but always figured that it would cause issues in a mapping party.
But perhaps we can incorporate it after all? The people it is most likely to cause issues for are the #Vespucci users, and they are experienced enough (and Vespucci's tooling is good enough) to handle upload conflicts.
Another issue is that if a user adds some data using a #StreetComplete layer, it takes time for quests to appear for it.
3. #MapComplete is good because it puts together the things people coming from Google Maps often expect from OSM - map data, photos, and ratings+reviews. The questions and the photo-taking may also add some variety and fun, and the photos also help other mappers verify the data and add details.
So here's the new idea -
1. We practice adding 1-3 POIs with CoMaps. There may be duplication, but that's okay, we (the organizers) will clean it up later as we usually do.
2. Then, we add 5-10 POIs with MapComplete.
3. Finally, we try out StreetComplete to add more details to the streets and POIs. We will use SC's team mode to divide quests between people on the same team.
I'll test the viability of this process soon.
(Vespucci will go back to being an editor for regular participants.)

On a positive note, I think this was a productive party. 8 out of 10 participants were experienced mappers, and I'm happy with the data we added to the market. 👍
On the other hand, there were hardly any people from Noida - clearly, the publicity needs more work 😐
One participant recommended posting on Luma, so I guess we'll be trying that.

Went to Noida Sector 18 yesterday to scout the venue for our upcoming mapping party.

First order of things was finding a place which could seat 10-15 people. There was a park with stone bleachers for seating, but it was in a terrible state. I mentally toyed with the idea of bringing a broom and sweeping the thing before we sit on it.
Fortunately, I found there was a pedestrianized street outside the park with lots of benches, including a big one that could seat around 15 people - perfect for us.
The pedestrian street was separated from nearby streets by rows of bollards. As I added these bollards, I was about to tag them as `bollard=fixed` on autopilot, when I realized that I was witnessing *my first example of rising bollards in India.*
In another first, a young man saw my OpenStreetMap India T-shirt and asked me *about OpenStreetMap*, rather than the far more common and paranoid question of "What are you doing?" or "Where (read: which government department) are you from?"
He was a software developer who needed map data for a project, and was weighing the differences between Google Maps and OSM. I invited him to the mapping party, and we exchanged phone numbers.
Later, I evaluated the nearby eateries, and finally ended up getting dinner at the DLF Mall of India - in the process adding many eateries in the area, and adding details for the mall's food court.
Here's my changeset for the day, made using #Vespucci. Took me around 90 minutes of active mapping.

I think Prāv (which is a fork of Quicksy) was interested in working on that.
But you're missing the point - XMPP gives you *freedom of service providers*. You don't *have* to use Quicksy or Prāv, not even to talk to Quicksy or Prāv users. You could use any of the many public servers, or host your own to have even stronger guarantees than Signal.

Look into #XMPP.
Projects like [Quicksy](https://quicksy.im) and [Prāv](https://prav.app) use phone numbers and allow easy onboarding and contact discovery. Unlike Signal, there's no lock-in - you can choose other servers which don't need a phone number, or host your own server (for which see [Snikket](https://snikket.org/), which allows for easy hosting of a private server, and provides rebranded clients and easy invitation-based onboarding), and still talk to Quicksy/Prāv users.
Servers on the XMPP network are also smaller and less convenient targets for backdoors, corporate takeovers, lawsuits, DDoS attacks, etc than the centralized servers of Signal etc. And since you can self-host it, you can actually trust that the server is running the code it has published.
