I think the main takeaway from all this, GrapheneOS is secure and works as intended. The Feds were unable to get anything off the victims phone without resorting to coercion and intimidation, duress pin worked as intended, deleting the contents irreversibly.

unfortunately according to the "border search exception" some of your constitutional rights are nullified.
Hopefully his lawyer gets him off, otherwise it's 15-20 and a fine.
I use an older secure "travel phone" during boarder crossings, there's literally nothing on it. No contacts, no signal chats, nothing. Runs GrapheneOS I reboot into BFU when I hit immigration. If someone want to confiscat it, it'll make a nice paperweight.

I got to use the moveink in a massive tech store in Tokyo last month, and my initial impression left me deeply impressed. Being an android tablet is very cool. The matte finish was brilliant, the screen was subdued compared to the nearby tablets, however glare from ambient lights was nonexistent. Drawing was the best I've experienced away from actual paper.
My biggest concern though, apparently no software upgrades for Android.

Samsung ships a tweaked version of Android, effectively Google's software in all but name. Where google goes, Samsung follows.
When I ditched Apple, I planned my switch to GrapheneOS along with my purchase of a new(to me) handset.

It feels like some weird fanboy-ism is ruining everything on the ol' internet these days, particularly the discourse around privacy and security. I'm just not sure what people think these businesses have done to earn their loyalty in the face of valid criticism.

it mostly comes down to hardware security concerns, that platforms like pinephone simply never intended to address. I’ve read a few threads where @npub1kwa…e0nj lays out the technical issues, and I’m sure there’s a blog post if you wanted a deep dive. Suffice to say, pinephone is about fostering and maturing the Linux ecosystem for mobile than a secure platform for GrapheneOS.

as a graphene user I'm not particularly concerned about the APK at all. What I am concerned about is some c-suite clown at google deciding that allowing bootloader unlock and relock doesn't fit with their new security theatre.
I mean, if google actually gave a shit about security for users, they'd be distributing GrapheneOS and not whatever they currently foist upon oems.

I'm extremely concerned about the hardware situation for graphene, there's currently no failover if Google decides it's not interested in supporting alternative OSs on it's hardware.
We need an alliance of the willing, perhaps handful of smaller OEMs willing to collaborate on releasing and supporting a shared architecture every couple years.

I emphatically agree with you. In addition I also extremely dislike many of Google's design choices for pixel hardware.
Only you can make the personal decision about how much exploitable attack surface you're willing to tolerate. For me, I want that to be as close to zero as possible.
The best case scenario I think, fairphone is able to make a fairphone 6 that meets or exceed Graphene's security requirements. I would buy a fairphone that I could install graphene on.

I ditched Apple a few years ago, if I did it today, knowing what I do... I would get a pixel and install @npub1kwa…e0nj on it. Then probably go with @npub15f7…m7wr running @npub1hpw…cd0d
This is where I ended up after faffing about. GrapheneOS is solid, literally the only private phone. Fedora has been the smoothest experience I've had on Linux, for me it just works. I was nonplussed with lenovo.
Notable mention @npub1rk6…hv4q if you wanna kick Google/Microsoft to the curb as well.

I use seperate devices because security features aside, I HATE my pixel phone; hung onto my 4A5G as long as I could.
Really though, I feel like GrapheneOS has all it's eggs in Google's basket, and their mass grave of discontinued products.
As a community, we need to do something about it.

my Japan phone is an Xperia 1 VI. From a hardware perspective it's the best phone I've ever owned, and I can't begin to describe how nice it is to have a wired headphone jack again.
Unfortunately, Sony is a pretty crappy steward of the software side. 2-3 years of updates is ridiculous these days. While the phone is pretty bloate free compared to other phones, there still some sketchy software that you can only remove with shizuku.

what bothers me about the current situation, Google could simply decide to stop making pixel phones the way they do.
What we need is a consortium of smaller manufacturers that get together and support a common "LTS" phone platform. Or a mandate from a market like the EU for a secure phone(France isn't leading the way).
None of that seems likely.

reading through comments, it’s like who said the Linux community isn’t welcoming?
DNS Adblock, getting my mother on my Adguard server has reduced her attack surface area substantially. I used to get a text every few months about an issue. Been trouble free for a year or more. She’s not on Linux, but the principal is fucking universal.
At this point everyone should be run their own DNS. We, as a community, need to make it easier for normies to deploy and use without big tech.

my best friend lives in Asheville, there’s no mobile signal, no water or power. No one he knows has an phone that supports satellite. However he and I have been able to text each other using #meshtastic over lorawan which we both got into over the summer. He’s also been able to text with other locals sharing information. I don’t have a complete picture of his experience, but he’s been very positive over texts I’ve received.

if we’re just spitballing, just make it illegal for politicians/candidates to lie. I mean, if a pol makes an objectively false statement, then any citizen they represent ought to be able to sue them for like dereliction or whatever. Because looking at how many reporters are still on xitter, the level of integrity needed for reporters to brutally shutdown liars or racists just isn’t there. They need the clicks/engagement or whatever metrics they’re evaluated on too much.

admission: I’m still using the same wired usb mouse that I got in 2001, I’ve tried using various BT/wireless mouses over the years, but just keep going back the reliable wired mouse. Often battery/connectivity issues, I would end up digging the old mouse out. Eventually, I just didn’t put it away, because it’s never let me down. I like it so much now, I bought a back up on eBay for $10 from an ewaste recycler. So Logitech, fuck right off.
