After years of denial the Met Police are now finally reviewing over 9000 cases dating back to 2010 as part of a new grooming gangs investigation.
Even though everyone knew it was a problem in London as well as other UK towns it has taken years to get any official recognition of this. Hopefully this will the the beginning of justice.
I am so heartbroken for all the victims and their families that I cannot be angry right now but that will come.

I have always admired my Jewish friends for never forgetting but carrying their sad history so lightly and for mostly having a cracking sense of humour about it. It is not foolish but rather a way to survive.
I am heartsore about the attack on the synagogue in Manchester yesterday and also very angry. British Jews have been badly let down by successive governments, public institutions, the media and many more. It definitely feels like things are getting worse for Jews here and it is hard to see how it can get better as our leaders are both incompetent and cowardly.

Hope my sister Spins are all well.
I took time offline for the first anniversary of my dad's death. It was a tough week and was made even worse by finding out that my aunt has advanced and incurable cancer.
Sadly she already has serious health issues which means she has very limited treatment options and is moving straight to end of life care. We are all very sad but determined to give her and my uncle as much support as we can.

In the least surprising news since we learnt that the sun rises in the morning the UK Royal College of Policing thinks that men are at risk of FGM. If I was in charge it would be the first but by no means last quango that I would dismantle on day 1.
This is ridiculous but does real damage to the campaigns against FGM and is deeply upsetting to survivors.

Anyone got any got any good advice on how to get matted fur unmatted on a floofy cat who hates being combed?
Tabby cat has really soft, long fur and while he was relaxed next to me on the sofa I managed to discover some really nasty matted fur where he has extra floofy bits at the top of his front legs. Given how much he fights me when I try to groom him it would be dangerous for both of us for me to try to cut it out. 😩
He lets me comb his back, neck and tail but is really sensitive when I try to tackle other bits. Even though he hates it I am going to have to deal with this and preferably while still keeping the skin on my hands and arms! After a fairly gentle exploration this afternoon he is now sat on the opposite side of room to me giving me stink eye.

I admire Allison Bailey for pursuing this case. She could have just found another vet but instead she decided to fight for others.
She knew more than most about how many women were being silenced and forced out of jobs, public spaces, women's services and even like this private services because they were unable to speak out. Well done to her and her legal team and I really hope other businesses take note.

I am glad that you are well enough to complete and dedicate your ride to Lola. It is so sad when loved pet dies but they forever stay in your heart and memories.
I am not sure my cats would appreciate that sort of effort. Mine have been and are mostly very lazy. They have excitable, play/hunting moments but they are fleeting. They are never happier than when languidly lying in a warm comfy spot just occasionally opening an eye to check on things.

I was brought up Catholic and much to my mum's dismay stopped going to church when I was in my teens and stopped believing in some of the key tenets of the religion.
I was not willing to live with the hypocrisy of attending church and taking communion while disagreeing with key beliefs. However, this idiot MP seems to be one of the annoying crowd who think that religion is a pick'n'mix as well as being an easy way to get your kids into the best schools 🤦‍♀️
I fully support the local priest who has called him out.

Oh Nina. This post makes me feel so sad for you. It is such a horrible dilemma.
My tabby is a very messy pooper. I got him an extra big cat tray with a lid and door. He wouldn't use it with the door but once I took that off he is now happy to do his business in there. He goes in and squats with his head sticking out but it does trap all the mess inside. I also use big tray liners so it is easy to clean out. Maybe something like this would help contain Lola's mess.
Also have you spoken to the vet as 3 poos a day is a lot? Maybe a diet change could help firm things up. After my recent experiences with my black cat and her £3000 poo I feel I am now an expert in this!!!
Finally some cat litters are better than others. I now use a mix of a wood pulp and a dust-free/odour reducing litter. Some of the cheaper brands trigger my asthma. Dealing my cats' toilet needs in a way that minimises problems for me is an expense but fortunately I can afford it and I think they are worth it.
Hopefully you can work things out for you and Lola so that you can stay together and stay well.

Grief is weird. I am not a fan of over commercialised "special" days but today is Father's Day in the UK and the first one since my Dad died.
It has made me very sad. I just called my mum and she is really feeling it too. She has also never been into Father's Day or Mother's Day. The days she wanted family around her were birthdays which were a special individual celebration, and then Christmas and Easter which were important to her for religious reasons and for family bonding.
Anyway, it was good to talk to her and we ended the call laughing but I will be very glad when today is over.
PS. I still think all those cringe posts on social media celebrating Father's Day but really virtue signalling by mentioning those who are grieving are really awful. The messages I sent to the other fathers in my family were all just to celebrate them as Dads (two for the first time this year) and not make them feel guilty.

Well done. Decent rugs/carpets recover surprisingly well after years of mistreatment. One of my friends used to buy/sell carpets from Morocco and Tunisia. He would add a premium to a well used but still top quality carpet. He said moderate use and carpet beating added value. Cat barfing is probably not a value add.

Sad to hear about the death of Loretta Swit but she had a long, fulfilling life and made a big impact on many through her work as an actress. She was fabulous in MASH. Her performance as Major "Hot Lips" Houlihan was fantastic and she was a vital part of the team that made MASH such a successful TV show. Hot Lips was a complicated character with many flaws and restricted by the social codes of the time. However her passion for life, strong sense of justice and big heart always shone through and Loretta portrayed her beautifully.
I loved watching both Hot Lips and Loretta mature over the many seasons of MASH. She was one of those actresses I felt that I knew as a person.
I also thought she was perfect as the first incarnation of Christine Cagney in the pilot film and it was a shame she was not able to go on to make the Cagney and Lacey TV show.

Feeling anxious as my little black cat is ill again. I was just relaxing and thinking we were over the recent health crisis but here we go again. 😢
She regurgitated her evening meal yesterday and breakfast this morning. She has also not done a poo for over 24 hours. I am worried that she has an ongoing digestion issue and last month was not just an unlucky one-off.
I have fed her a tiny bit of chicken and plain yoghurt this afternoon which she has kept down so I am not yet panicking. She is also moving around OK, lets me rub her tummy and she is not distressed.
Fingers crossed she keeps eating without regurgitating again and does a poo tomorrow or we will back to the vets on Tuesday. 🤞

I am going to break my rule not to bitch about women who have put a lot on the line to in the fight to protect our rights. I still admire everyone who has pushed back whether publicly or privately but I really need a good rant!
I am not going to name names as I think most of you on Spinster will know who I am talking about but I can't be the only one noticing that some of the women who are now posting on their socials about how TRAs and their allies are rewriting history are doing the same thing. Some of the ones basking in the glow of the FWS victory and clamouring for media spots seem to have forgotten that they were not first out of the blocks and were not the ones involved in the hard graft of the legal fight.
Everyone's contribution is important but some women have done a lot more than others and it annoys me when this is not properly acknowledged and when heroines like Kate Coleman and Nic Williams are sidelined. Even worse is the continued disrespect to KJK, Julia Long and others who were vital to encouraging all women to hold the line and for giving a platform to women who were ignored or were accused of being right wing bigots by other campaigners.
The blog post "Pronouns are Rohypnol" was published by Fair Paly for Women in 2019. Some of us were already of that view but it was a game changer for many others. I remember the women who ignored its warning and kept pushing for understanding and respect. They were wrong and it is poor form now to act like they always championed clarity when many of them did the opposite.
Anyway, that's my moaning done. I will now try to go back to being polite to everyone again until the next time I build up a head of steam.

As some of you know I spent most of my career working in HR and specialised in HR policy. I quit HR in 2012 for a number of reasons and the early identity politics impact was one of them. Since then I stayed friends with many former colleagues but some did cut ties when it became to clear to them that I was gender critical. I was not looking for work in HR so it was not damaging but some of it was upsetting like being dropped from invites to get togethers and reunions. I was clearly no longer one of the "good people".
I will still defend the role of HR in organisations and know that there are many great HR professionals but seeing the reaction to the Supreme Court ruling is making that even more difficult than it already was. LinkedIn is full of terrible takes on the ruling. 🤦‍♀️
It is time for the HR profession admit it has got a lot wrong and start making things right. Until they do that HR will be seen as a dud profession and in all honesty I would not recommend it to any young person as a good career option. No one should take a job which requires you to ignore your conscience and mute what you say.

Already I am seeing conspiracy theories on X that the Trump administration is trying to get a MAGA friendly pope elected.
They are deluded if they think that the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is going to take notice of any outside pressure. Whoever the new pope is will be decided solely on internal church politics and power plays which have been plotted from the day Francis was confirmed as Pope. They rely on a secretive process to protect those taking part and are not going to swayed by anyone outside their bubble world.

Since her recent illness my little black cat has become my shadow and constant companion. She follows me about the house, sits as close as she can if I am busy and sits on or next to me whenever I am still. She has even taking to creeping in to sleep right next to my head at night trapping my hair on my pillow so I wake up if I move even a few inches. It is very annoying and she may well find herself shut out of the bedroom at night if this continues.
I hope she stays cuddly but she also needs to relax and get a bit more independent soon as it is very intense right now. Understandably my tabby cat is getting jealous. He wants attention too and is now also acting a bit more needy. I just want to get back to normal ASAP.

For Spinsters not in the UK, the UK media has had extensive coverage of the Supreme Court ruling today and it has been better than we would have got a few years ago. There have been plenty of interviews with For Women Scotland, Sex Matters, Julie Bindel and others involved in the long legal fight to get this to the Supreme Court.
Sadly many trans and gender ideology grifters have also been on TV, radio and podcasts too. I have worked hard to tune out the bad actors and stay focused on how this is a good win for women. We need to celebrate and use it to fuel us for the next battle.
I am so in awe of the women who have been on the frontline in this years long legal battle and I hope they all celebrated today. For Women Scotland were able to lead this battle as it was the Scottish Government who were pushing ridiculous ideas through the Scottish Parliament. They did so bravely and I bloody love them! They were supported by women from across the UK and I am proud to be from Terf Island.

My X timeline is still full of people debating "Englishness" and with less clarity as time passes. It is also increasing clear that most of those getting irate and posting their rubbish views are men.
My guess is that women have more pressing concerns as brought home very starkly today by the latest UK femicide report. #2000Women
The report details that:
- 90% of the women were killed by men they knew
- 61% were killed by a current or former partner
- 9% were killed by their sons and 6% by other family members
- 71% were killed in their own homes.
There are many more brutal facts and devastating stories perhaps most heartbreakingly that 37 women were killed alongside their children (53 child victims) and most commonly by the father of the children.
I thank those who take on the awful work of reading the crime reports, gathering the data and producing the this annual census detailing the deaths of so many women. It is vital work and I hope that those in positions to do something about it read the report and take much needed action beyond expressing their sadness which is all we usually get.

It is being reported on X that the US tried to send illegal immigrants back to Columbia and they refused to accept them. Trump posted about it on Twitter and made threats about trade and other issues and now they are sending the Presidential plane to bring the illegals back to Columbia!!!

This is being shared on X. Not sure how accurate it is but I wouldn't be surprised if it is accurate. It also shows how much DEI is about virtue signalling rather than meaningful change to unfair employment practices.
When I worked in corporate HR nearly all board level directors (ie. the top HR job in the organisation) were male despite most junior roles being filled by women. If the top HR executive was a woman they were usually not on the Board and reported to a finance or legal director.

Just adding my tuppence worth.
The Eleanor Williams case was horrible and her trial was well covered in the UK media. She was found to be a fantasist and serial liar. Her lies had terrible consequences for those she accused and others who she included in her stories. Many survivors of rape/abuse and especially the rape gangs were deeply upset and felt that Williams had damaged their campaigns for justice. Sammy Woodhouse who was a victim of a Rotherham rape gang and is now a well known campaigner in the UK gave interviews making clear her concern about what Williams had done.
It was a shocking and very unusual case which raises many questions so it is not surprising that documentaries and dramas have been made about it. I haven't watched any of the recent programmes about the case so I can't comment on whether they are well made or just lurid takes which play on lying women tropes.

I know this is a day early but tomorrow I am hosting my niece, her husband and her 1 year old and 3 year old plus my mum. It will be a full on day and I am going to be exhausted after they leave so I may not post.
I wish you all the best for 2025. Mine is very going to be full of gin and tonics. I sent my usual Christmas list to family with gift suggestions and despite making plenty of reasonably priced suggestions I got 4 bottles of gin and just a few other things!!!
I guess I will be spending January drinking gin and then not caring one jot about the other stuff! 🤣

A couple of the women I worked with when I was doing anti FGM work were former PKK fighters. After moving to the UK they focused on supporting non-military campaigns but remained very fierce women. They had plenty to say in private conversations about the men who claimed superiority in the middle eastern countries but who were mostly regarded by women as violent fools. They were also very aware that men in the UK were monitoring what women said and that they had to be very careful. Since then things have got worse which is appalling and something all UK citizens should be campaigning against but cries from women still seem to be outside the hearing range of most men and especially the leftist feminist type of men.

I wasn't in acute distress but I was bringing up more blood than just a few specks from a minor bleed. A little goes a long way when mixed with mucus and saliva.
Once 111 confirmed I should get it checked out getting a taxi was faster that waiting for an ambulance.

Big drama last night. I have been sick all week with a horrible chesty cold and last night I had a severe coughing fit. Being asthmatic and getting a lot of bad coughs I thought I had things under control but then I started coughing up fresh blood and quite a lot of it.
I phoned 111 and between coughing and my voice having dropped at least 2 octaves I managed to explain what had happened and was told to take myself to A&E. As you can imagine the local taxi driver was not very impressed when he picked me up and I was looking worse than an impoverished Victorian consumption victim but he took me to hospital anyway.
Having suffered many a long waits in A&E I have to say that when you turn up coughing up frothy blood they act quickly. I was rushed through triage and quickly got checked out by doctor who seemed pretty sure it was not too serious. After a few hours for scans and tests it was confirmed that there was nothing else going on and I had damaged my throat/vocal chords by coughing and popped some minor blood vessels. Apparently this is enough to make you look like the bloodiest victim in a horror movie!!!
After a few hours I was back home with a bag of medicines and strict instructions to rest up for a few days and to not talk unless absolutely necessary. If I cough up fresh blood again over the weekend then I have to go back to hospital but otherwise can just follow up with my GP next week.
At least it all made a change from me going into hospital with a parent but I could have done without it!

Very true. Had a debate yesterday with someone who was trying to convince me that Welby was a decent man doing the right thing and using the Catholic Church as a contrast. He lost the argument and actually ended up pleading with me to stop telling him about all the way men from all faiths and none abuse women, children, animals and anything else they can either fetishise and/or stick their penises into.

Thank you so much for remembering and thinking of me.
Yes, the funeral was today and I got home about an hour ago. My brother is with my mum so I have been able to come home to chill out with the cats.
All the arrangements ran smoothly and it was a nice service and wake. It was touching how many people made the effort to attend and they all said lovely things about Dad. The priest was great and the funeral directors did a fantastic job. They really looked after mum and took away all the stress for the rest of us.
I managed to get through my section of the eulogy OK and everyone loved the poems. I am so glad I did it even though I was very stressed beforehand. I was also glad I was wearing a long dress as my kneecaps were jumping up and down whilst I was speaking!

OMG! Had a practice at reading my Dad's eulogy today in front of my mum and it was so emotional. I have no idea how I am going to get through this at his funeral.
My brother is saying a bit and then my nephew (on behalf of all the grandchildren and great grandchildren). Then as I promised Dad I will conclude with some final words and a poem he chose and a poem I choose. We both found comfort reading and debating about poetry together in his final years.
Both poems are short but powerful. I can read the rest OK (including the boys' sections) but the poems really hit hard.
If I can deliver them well they are poignant but uplifting but if I am sobbing it will be such a mess. Please send all the positive vibes you can. I need them on Tuesday.

Thanks. I like the advice about asking someone who works in a salon for advice. I am seeing a friend next week who is a hair stylist but works in a salon which also does other treatments. I am sure she will have a lot of ideas on this.

OK this is an odd post for Spinster as it is all a bit women's magazine problem page but ...
Post menopause I now get the occasional really fast growing hair on my face mostly on my cheeks and chin. They seem to come from nowhere and greatly annoy me. Some are soft and some are bristly. They are all irritating. At the same time my eyebrows have almost disappeared.
Maybe I should ignore all this but it annoys me too much. Obviously once I spot the long hairs I can pluck them out if I am at home but any sensible advice on facial hair management for post menopausal women would be appreciated.

Yes. I was born in England and trace my ancestry back to the 1600s in England and Scotland. Given the system we have that means that without doubt he is my king but to be honest that doesn't mean much to me. If I met him I would be polite but I don't feel duty bound to do what he says. He is a constitutional monarch.
In my youth I would rail against the monarchy but no one has yet convinced me that a different system that would work better for the UK. It's a bit like the House of Lords. In theory it's terrible but in practice and given all the quirks in the British/UK constitution and law it works well and sometimes it is best not to fix things that are not broken.

As someone who is going through a very shit time right now I find that advice on looking after myself and doing positive things well meaning but useless. When life is really shit you can't fix that or how you feel about it. You need to get through it and then start rebuilding.
I am currently having nightmares every night and suffering from asthma/anxiety about being called to the hospital and being there on my own for my Dad's death. I was close to him so I am also dealing with all the admin from his death and arranging the funeral and wake which is taking forever as although he had been ill for such a long time it was still an unexpected death.
Anyway, just do what you need to do each day and remember that things will get better. I find comfort in making sure the funeral is what he wanted and also in how much other people loved him. We have received many lovely sympathy cards.
My best advice to you is to keep life as simple as you can while things are bad and not to feel bad or guilty about being sad, depressed or anxious. These are natural feelings and in the long run they help you heal.

I missed this article by Sonia Sodha when it was published because of what was happening with my Dad.
I am strongly opposed to assisted dying legislation. I know there are some difficult cases but I think that we need to find ways to help in those rare exceptions and still preserve laws that safeguard everyone else.
My Dad was diagnosed with a progressive disease in his 50s. He faced many challenges especially in his last few years but I would not trade that time for anything. If the law had been different and he did not have family to help him he probably would have been euthanised. Same for my cousin who was born with severe disabilities but is still with us and part of a loving family 42 years later.
Assisted dying legislation is for rich people who have support and want a pain free last resort option. They are less at risk of coercion, bad care and neglect which would drive many others to early deaths enabled and carried out by the government. No matter how it happens a human death should never be an easy option.
I am horrified by some of the reports from countries that have already passed laws to enable assisted dying. I do not want it in the UK.

Thanks Flick and yes, the registrar very sympathetically explained why she was asking about the hip replacement. To be honest I wasn't upset by the question, I just didn't know the answer!
Fortunately it is very straightforward settling Dad's estate as most things are jointly held with mum and she is the only beneficiary. It will be more complicated when Mum dies so awful as it is I know that need to prepare for that too.

There has been so much going on this week that I didn't post about this earlier. When I went to register my Dad's death the doctor who recorded his death had had to formally state that he wasn't pregnant at the time of death.
My dad would have laughed but really!!! If a doctor has already confirmed that someone is an 86 year old man do they really need to also formally declare that he was not pregnant at the time of death.
I snorted as I read it in the Registry Office and the Registrar immediately asked if I had spotted an error. When I told her what the problem was she rolled her eyes and snorted. We then had a nice bonding moment about mad bureaucracy. I think she was a secret TERF.
I had everything prepared to register the death but I still got caught out as I supposed to know if his metal hip replacement was for a right or left hip! He had it done nearly 30 years ago. How the hell was I meant to know that was important amongst all the other death admin.

I got the dreaded phone call at 5am this morning to say that my Dad was nearing end of life. I was able to get the to hospital and be with him but by mid morning it was clear that he was going downhill very quickly. We were able to get my Mum to the hospital and we sat with him for his last few hours. He was very calm and peaceful which was a blessing. The hospital staff were very good and kind which also helped.
After struggling with advanced Parkinsons and generally failing health I am glad he is now at rest but I also cannot believe he is gone.
Anyway just posting here as I know so many of you have gone through similar times. No matter how much you prepare and think you are ready it is so very hard to say that final goodbye.

I sometimes disagree with Julie Bindel but I respect her her many years of hard work fighting for women's rights and especially for poor and criminalised women. She was one of the first journalists to report properly on the harms to women rights from trans/queer issues, porn rebranding prostitution as sex work and surrogacy.
The horror that now unfolding in commercial surrogacy has been highlighted by many feminists. The quote from Alan White is terrible. No one, man or woman, should have a right to buy a baby just because they want one. I really struggle to understand people who do not get this basic point.

I spent most of the afternoon and early evening with my Dad who is still in hospital. He is in a side room because of all his complications so it is nice and private. It is also a good place to chat to the nurses when then come in to check on him. Most of them seem very happy to spend a few minutes chatting before going back to the main ward.
We hear about all the nonsense in the NHS but that really does seem to be mostly in the admin/managerial staff. The medical teams and especially nursing and support staff are all great. I took in a box of chocolate truffles today for the team on duty and they were very happy and pleased.

I have wiped it down and it still works but the cuff now smells of cat urine. 😩

I loved the early Scarpetta books when they were first published and Patricia Cornwell has done a lot to promote female writers and female led crime fiction.
The Scarpetta storylines got too convoluted and silly for me as the series went on but Cornwell always writes well. Maybe the TV series will be better than we are both expecting. I certainly hope so.

Isn't that the diet aimed at tackling type 2 diabetes? I am OK on blood sugar levels. The stuff I need to do according to my GP is all the things we already know but are not very good at. Eat more fresh veg and some but too much fruit, eat less high carb/sugar/processed foods, drink less alcohol and exercise more.
I like all the healthy stuff but I also like pizza and wine. At least I am getting my steps in this week trekking around the local hospital to visit my Dad.

After having a couple of high blood pressure readings I am now having to keep a diary of my reading for a week and then go back to see the GP again. My dad being back in hospital is not helping matters but given that is now normal for me perhaps it is as well is has happened during this week when I am tracking things.
I am also trying to eat more healthy foods. My neighbour kindly helped by bring lots of goodies from his allotment and promised more next week. He thinks his leeks will be ready soon and they are one of my favourite veg. In return I feed his cats when he goes on holiday which is no bother at all. My kitchen is now full of locally grown fresh fruit and veg plus my supermarket shop this week will be very small. This is a really good deal for me!
My gardener neighbour also has no time for any trans or queer nonsense. We had a chat a year or so ago about our local council wasting money on stupid things including several Pride road crossings. Now he knows I keep an eye on such things he asks for updates but after a few minutes then says that's enough of that and switches to talk about gardening or neighbourhood gossip. He is a lovely chap and his wife is nice too.

My mum was taken ill early this morning and we have spent the whole day in the local hospital emergency department. She is poorly but not too bad and after a day of tests is being kept in for observation.
No matter how much I moan about Labour and how captured it is by identity politics and its dreadful betrayal of women I will also never ever forgive the Tories for the current state of the NHS.
I have been a regular in our local hospitals with both my parents as they aged and needed more treatment. It is so much worse now than 10 or even 5 years ago. There are more sick people as we have an aging population and there are less GP appointments or other clinics available. The staff are mostly great and often brilliant whilst working under war zone like conditions in A&E departments. This is not just because of Covid backlogs. They are many problems which have been left to fester for way too long.
Today we arrived at the hospital at 11am. I left my mum at 10pm and for all that time she was on a trolley bed in a corridor. All her admission tests, regular obs checks, doctor assessments were all done in the corridor. No privacy even when they had to partially undress her for an ECG. There was also no system for her to ask for nurse assistance. If I hadn't had stayed with her I doubt she would have got much if anything to eat or drink and would have been left to soil herself as she was not able to get out of bed to go to the bathroom.
I hate that is this is now just a normal day in a big UK hospital. The Tories allowed this to build up to the current crisis.
Sorry for ranting but it was a really tough day.

There is so much happening that is awful for women at this Olympics but there are some wins and we should celebrate those. So today I am raising my glass to cycling.
The track cycling events have now started and cheater Bridges is not part of Team GB. Even though they dithered for far too long British Cycling did finally clarify eligibility rules to protect women's sport. So all the soft focus photo shoots, media puff pieces and being on Vogue's female power list didn't not get Bridges into the women's team. Hurrah! 🥂

It is appalling that Sharron Davies has to give interview after interview correcting her BBC colleagues in both news and sports departments who still are woefully ignorant about what is really happening. With my b-i-l it was all very uncertain in the weeks following the first diagnosis as everything has to go step by step. Make sure your uncle has plenty of support but you also need to make sure that the cancer does not take over everything. Keep enjoying normal stuff with your uncle too.
