'Love without trust is the definition of an abusive relationship.'
That resonat with me—and it might explain why I stopped using smartphones.
I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why they made me feel uneasy, but I think I understand now. Years ago, I carried a work phone in a corporate environment where it had to be always on. The constant external pressure was exhausting. When I finally abandoned mobile phones altogether, I felt relieved. But comparing smartphones to abusive relationships crystallized something I’d been struggling to articulate: the erosion of autonomy, the constant surveillance, the feeling of being controlled.
Phones are addictive, creepy, and surprisingly political. Since every so often I find an open hardware project that is completely unnecessary for me and just amazingly wonderful at the same time — a 3D printable typewriter is exactly that. It is wonderful — I love the idea not only because it is so nicely quirky, but also because it offers the possibility of customizing a self-made typewriter, for example with a personal typeface (font) or a special underserved alphabet like, for example, the 28 letters of the Esperanto alphabet or maybe the Shavian phonographic alphabet or another rare genre of alphabetic system.
It's just amazing how talented some people are and how open-sourcing it makes it possible for everybody to apply their creativity and find new and surprising ways to express themselves.

On Wednesday, the launch of DC-Edic, the Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium, took place. This is a European collaboration aimed at reducing the EU's dependence on major tech companies, primarily from the US. The initiative received the green light from the European Commission at the end of October and falls under the Dutch Ministry of the Interior.
The goal is to develop open and transparent alternatives for digital services, such as artificial intelligence, cloud solutions, cybersecurity, and social networks.
The original idea to work on more digital autonomy in Europe came from France about three years ago and was adopted by the then State Secretary for Digitalization, Alexandra van Huffelen, at the Ministry of the Interior. In addition to France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Poland are also involved in Edic. Several other EU member states also want to join.
Society
Marleen Stikker has been advocating for years for software that serves society. The founder and director of Waag Futurelab calls the initiative of the four countries a 'hopeful first step.' "Digital commons are created to improve society as a whole. This requires non-private parties, such as foundations, associations, and cooperatives," says Stikker.
In the development of these services, commercial companies also play a significant role, according to Stikker. "Collaboration between businesses and knowledge institutions yields good solutions. These are sometimes even qualitatively better than the commercial packages currently in use."
One of the components Edic is already working on is Mijn Bureau (My Office). This is an office solution as an alternative to the Microsoft package, which many companies and governments currently use. Unlike Microsoft's Office package, Mijn Bureau is developed by various suppliers. Companies and governments can choose email from one company and spreadsheets and presentations from another supplier. In the American model, users are typically dependent on a single commercial company. In the plan of the four countries, users can choose from different suppliers. This allows for more competition, makes it easier for users to switch, and keeps them in control of their data.
Companies are therefore no longer dependent on a single supplier. "It also saves a lot of money. For a fraction of what companies and governments currently spend on license costs, you can ensure that this kind of collaboratively developed software is maintained and further developed. This is the route to more strategic autonomy and sovereignty in Europe."

Stikker is deeply concerned about the slow pace at which some companies and governments are changing their strategies. Last week, it became known that despite objections, the Tax and Customs Administration and the Benefits Agency are switching their office automation to the full Microsoft 365 package. The Ministry of Finance acknowledges that the US government will soon be able to monitor email traffic, among other things, but still adheres to the transition, wrote demissionary State Secretary Eugène Heijnen in response to parliamentary questions.
It is irresponsible for the government to continue making itself dependent on big tech, says Stikker. "It is now about our national security. Look, for example, at the new US security strategy that President Trump presented last weekend. We are no longer allowed to say anything about the major American tech companies and must adapt our laws. This means we can no longer use our protections. Big tech has become a tool of geopolitics."
Stikker cannot understand why there are still governments that prefer to spend their IT budget on major American tech companies. "This way, we are not utilizing and using our investments well. With these kinds of contracts, you commit yourself for years, while we could also spend the money for those licenses on our independence and strategic autonomy."
The argument that you compromise on quality with an open-source solution is nonsense, according to Stikker. This is demonstrated, among other things, by the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which moved all its office automation to a European party in six months, and also by an initiative like Surfnet, which makes it possible for universities and colleges to switch."

I recalled your distro as a wonderful and easy starting point into Arch Linux, so I wanted to test the accessibility features before recommending it to him.
I truly appreciate your patience and understanding as I seek to ensure that my friend has the best possible experience transitioning to Arch Linux. It's always great to help someone get good advice on how to start their journey into Arch Linux, especially when it comes to making technology accessible to everyone.
Including Orca preinstalled on the demo version would be incredibly helpful. Without a screen reader, testing a distro as a visually impaired person is even more challenging than testing a distro without a graphical user interface. Orca is a powerful screen reader that integrates well with GNOME and other desktop environments, making it an excellent choice for users who rely on screen readers for navigation.
If it wouldn't take too much effort or space on the ISO, it would be greatly appreciated if you could include Orca in the Demo installation. This inclusion would make your distro much more accessible and user-friendly for visually impaired users like my friend and me.
I strongly believe that including Orca by default would not only help my friend get started with Arch Linux more easily but also demonstrate your commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. I typically use QEMU for more involved virtualization tasks and GNOME Boxes for a quick impression.
I tried the ISO in Virt-Manager based on your recommendation. As for the screen reader, I managed to get eSpeak running; it is the default TTS used by Orca and seems functional. However, I encountered an issue with installing Orca itself, and I wasn't able to install it using pacman.
I've taken a screenshot of the issue, but without a screen reader, it's challenging for me to navigate, and I don't know if it helps with troubleshooting.

I'm not sure how time-consuming it is to implement new stickers into Mastodon, but if it isn't too much trouble, I would be thrilled to have some additional options. Specifically, I would love to see the addition of the :disability_flag: and the :esperanto_flag: stickers.

However, there are legitimate instances where verification is necessary, such as when setting up two-factor authentication or recovering an account.

@nprofile…cx8e 🐟 💙 I mostly use the Fish shell; it's nice and feature-rich right out of the box. Unlike Bash, I feel like I can start using it productively without much configuration.
Just keep in mind that Bash scripts need to be translated to Fish script for them to work.
One downside is that some commands behave slightly differently from Bash, which can sometimes lead to unexpected results or even crashes, especially with Bluetooth-related commands. However, Fish scripts are more readable and easier to write.
The overall experience is quite smooth, and the improved usability and features make it a great choice 💙 🐟

Switching from Ubuntu to Kubuntu can be a great experience, especially if you prefer the KDE Plasma desktop environment. If you just want to use the Plasma desktop, you can install the desktop environment via APT:

Attention everyone on Mastodon! There's a scam making the rounds where malicious actors impersonate moderators or admins. They send private messages or make posts that mimic notifications, claiming that your account needs verification. These messages often include a link for you to "complete the verification process."
⚠️ This is a Scam!
Your server admin will never ask you to click a link to verify your account.
No other admin from any other server will either, even if they appear to be part of the main Mastodon team.
If your account is suspended, you won't receive a message about it. Instead, you'll see a notification upon logging in that your account is temporarily suspended.
How to Identify the Scam:
Fake admin accounts often use names containing "moderator" or "admin," but this doesn't mean they are legitimate.
Legitimate admins or instance owners usually have a badge or marking on their profile indicating their role.
What to Do:
If you receive a message or post urging you to click a link to verify your account, report it immediately.
If you have any doubts about your account status, contact your server admin or moderation team directly.
To verify the authenticity of an admin or instance owner, visit the "About" page of your instance. This page typically lists contact information for the real team administering your instance.
Always be cautious when interacting with accounts claiming to be from Mastodon or your instance's admin team.
Important Reminder:
Mastodon does not perform age verification. If you receive a message or post claiming to be from Mastodon or your instance's admin team, always verify its authenticity before taking any action.
Reporting the Scam:
