Just encountered a water moccasin also known as a cottonmouth snake in the blackberries. I decided not to be so foolish as to stop and take a photo with my phone. Just imagine a very angry-looking, stocky, black snake displaying a triangular head and posturing as if it were giving me a few seconds head start.😅

When are you "from" a place?
My family moved a fair amount when I was growing up. Perhaps as a result, I feel like anywhere I am is a kind of home, even when I travel out of the country. I don't feel homesick when I travel. But when I live somewhere and interact with people who have lived in that place all of their lives, I am faced with the reallization that our origins are not the same. Our home is not the same. We are not "from" the same place.
When do we truly feel as if we are "from" a place? What makes it so? Is it because we are born there? Is it because we've lived there for as long as we can remember? What if, as I have, the longest time we've lived anywhere has been in a place where there is no connection to our ancestors? And despite how long I've lived in my current place, the only place where I truly feel a strong sense of home is New Orleans. It is where many of my family members live, those who emigrated from Honduras and those who were born in the USA. Oddly, although I've lived in New Orleans in the past, I don't want to live there. This is something I cannot explain. Yet, I long for New Orleans; I dream about it often; I miss being there.
Clarice Lispector wrote this fascinating short story (https://www.are.na/block/20383163) that I read today. It's not about this topic exactly--maybe a little, in a roundabout way. But I mention it only because it led me to research her. Her bio indicates that she was Brazilian. But her family fled from pogroms during the Russian Civil War, arriving in Brazil in 1922 when she was only 1 year old. Neither she nor any of her ancestors were born in Brazil. They were all from what is today known as Ukraine. Yet, Brazil appears wholeheartedly to embrace her as a Brazilian author. She wrote in Portuguese and spent her life up until she was 22 years old in Brazil. She then married and moved to various countries in Europe, the US, and eventually back to Brazil in 1959 where she lived until her death in 1977. So was she Brazilian?
In my mind, if I moved to Brazil from anywhere, I would never 'be' Brazilian. But is this simply because of my life experience? I'd be curious to know what others think about when a person is "from" somewhere.

Interesting to think about. This place operates more on what I might term peer pressure. I don’t know why it seems to work better for me than places like FB and X. Somehow the element of civilization that wants to be decent seems more prevalent in the Fedi than on Big Social.

So basically, Big Social Media wants to go back to being how we were in the 1970s and before. You know: calling anyone who was different whatever slurs we wanted, making people feel terrible for expressing their feelings, pretending we didn’t have any feelings, bullying everyone all the time, etc. I’m not here for any of that. I’m not there either.
