PSA: historians tend to side with empires because empires leave things that historians can study, like texts and stone monuments and whatnot. free peoples are much more likely to rely on organic materials and oral literature, so they end up without a presence in history. (as someone said, history isn't written by the victors, history is written by the writers.)
so you have to look at archaeology, and when you do that you find that life in the "dark ages" following a "collapse" of an empire—Rome, Maya, Han etc.—was actually better for the commoner than during the high imperial times (skeletons show signs of better nutrition, less disparity between people, better health markers etc.). Empires are good at creating great monuments and whatnot but if you're ever killed by truck-kun and reborn in premodern times, aim for the distributed confederacies of a "dark age" rather than empires at their peak, because in a stratified society statistically you'll be a slave or servant of some kind and it's much less fun. (early medieval peasants not only had better nutrition than their predecessors but also than early modern urbanites, a gap only closed in the 20th century.)
the same goes for stateless people, often called "hunter-gatherers" even though they usually know about agriculture and just choose not to rely exclusively on it:

Whenever I discuss how much Duolingo sucks and doesn't work and is in fact counterproductive and all that was already the case *before* it got rebuilt from slop, people ask the very reasonable question: "If not Duolingo, then what"?
My answer is that literally any other method is better than Duolingo lol

is dying, apparently:
DUOL shares have fallen more than 78% from their May 2025 high, and that’s before its nearly 25% fall in premarket trading today.
I've said before that one of the very few good things generative "AI" may do to the world is accelerating the enshittification cycle so much that it kills stuff that was already terrible and a drain on society (social media; platformization; curation algorithms…). Speaking as a linguist who speaks 4 languages and has read the literature on second language acquisition, it has always been my position that the Duolingo method is useless—it feels like you are learning a language, but you can spend infinite hours with it and gold a full tree and you'll still get nowhere, and if you put a fraction of the time in about any other method, including doing pen-and-paper drills with old-fashioned paper-based textbooks, you'd have progressed much faster.
And old-fashioned grammar drills suck, too. It's just that Duolingo really, really sucks.
(Methods that work better: 1) Find an intensive "conversation"-type course, or anything that is labelled as "natural" or "immersion" or "storytelling" methods; or get tandem partners; or online coaches such as in italki; failing that, join a conventional language course, the more "intensive" the better; work on these until you absorb basic grammar and vocabulary, focusing on spoken language not writing; 2) Once this bootstrap period is over, start talking to people, watching media, or reading stuf that interests you, in large quantities and every day; do not wait until you're "good" to move into the input stage, start actually using the language for things you wanted it for, as soon as possible, which is sooner than you think; partial comprehension is fine.) Of course I hope Duolingo dies horribly in a fire after it backstabbed its workers with the "AI memo", but even if it didn't, the world is better off without it.
One lesson we can get from this: Consider that overnight 25% drop in investment, which may well prove to be the coup the grâce. It was not caused by Duo losing users or enshittifying with "AI", but by the opposite: investors mass panicked at the company setting its target revenue too low, as in a mere… 1.22 billion, rather than the 1.26 billion the investors wanted. Now the reason Duolingo is not chasing that higher goal is that they're seeing the writing on the wall, and went into damage control mode: they're pulling down a bit on squeezing their current paying users and trying to improve the experience of the free tier, in an attempt to reverse the bleed and bring in more customers.
In other words, Duolingo tried to slow down the slightest tiny bit on enshittification—3% less cash—and this already got swift punishment from the market gods. With capitalism, there is no long-term thinking: you're expected to provide the richest people on Earth with infinite growth of their ever-increasing profits squeezed from customers paying every month more and more, now and forever, or you'll be taken out and replaced by someone willing to try.

the other day I was chatting about the state of the world with someone I had just barely met, and they said something like, "I know we have just barely met and maybe it's weird of me to say this but I'll say it anyway: if things go bad and you ever need a place to stay in my country, for any reason, you can stay at my flat."
and they meant it too, and I thought like: this is what I want to hear from cis folk. that's the right thing to say. this shows me that someone 1) is not turning away from what's going on, 2) is not in denial, 3) understands the stakes, has the correct priorities.
I don't expect I'll have to take them on that offer because I have comrades and a good support network and if I ever get deported or need to lay low I'm reasonably confident I would find help on this continent. that's not the case for many trans people, especially the younger ones. a lot of us get thrown out by our families and have absolutely nowhere to turn to; I adopted a couple of those myself. there's a reason why the antifascist podcast "It Could Happen Here" adopted as a slogan "put a trans woman on your couch". this also applies to Latinx immigrants in the USA and any other such situations, of which examples abound.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but you should be really very, very careful to draw the distinction between
- anger and aggression
- hurt and violence
- emotional affect and yelling at
- sexualness and sexualisation
- conflict and abuse
- difference of opinion and gaslighting
- suicidal ideation and suicide threats
- arguing your case and manipulating
- needing space and stonewalling
etc. etc. because queer circles are haunted by a particular type of *actually* manipulative person who weaponises buzzwords from psychology and social justice to guilt-trip you with the second column in response to the first column, as a tool of control.
the things in the second column are actual things that exist and are bad and are used to control people without regard for the damage it causes them. they are also not the things in the first column. the distinction matters.
(if you feel anxious because you think I'm talking about you: manipulation is *not* something you can do by accident or mistake. if you're worried at all about whether you do this, no you don't. I'm talking about people who are very aware of what they do. yes I also thought that people like that don't exist; alas, I've learned better.)
beware also of trying to diagnose this by asking for other people's independent opinion, in the case where you're in a marginalised category (racialised, refugee etc.) and all the "independent opinions" available to you are from the dominant category, because without knowing why, somehow you mysteriously ended up in a situation where everyone witness to your situation are friends of your accuser and belong to their social group. you have no idea how ready people are to "believe victims" specifically in the case where the purported victim is white and the purported abuser is Black, or Euro native and Muslim immigrant, or cis and trans, or Western and Eastern European, for example.
the actual diagnosis should be first of all with yourself, like: overall, how does it feel to be around this person? how often do I feel this way? do I feel like they have power over me? materially speaking, do they have actual power over me (financially, legally etc.)? is there a recurring pattern to the point where they're nice to me most of the time yet I never feel safe because I'm always expecting when will the next lashing out come? do I feel unable to respond to these accusations? do I feel unable to leave? why is that? have they taken steps to keep me here, do they undermine friendships/polyamory with my own people, do they make threats when I talk about leaving? and so on.

took a look and it's the most evil thing I could think of: an one-hour ad is a "track" in the "full album" playlist.
the only way to listen to music is really offline, huh. for anything indie I'm ok with buying it on bandcamp fridays (or, preferably, the co-op thing if it works out), but anything big label I'd rather pirate, except torrenting music doesn't work for the kind of thing I like (e.g. Ōno Rika's shinobue album Inishie wo). even nonobscure bands seem untorrentable—the only Onmyō-za discography torrent even on nyaa is the same one I used in like, 2015, and it has no seeders and probably hasn't in years. many of my Onmyō favs aren't even on Youtube anymore... especially for Japanese stuff, you gotta pirate, download, backup, and get physical media to boot whenever you can, it has a tendency to evaporate from the online quickly. also goes for manga raws, ebooks, and (crucially) EPWING dictionaries.

1. Babies acquire languages without conscious effort or analysis, by exposure alone;
2. Babies are perfectly able to acquire multiple languages, with no effort and no detriment to their ability in using any of them;
3. In all conditions of freedom (let's define this as "the absence of State structures"), human societies are highly multilingual, with big language differences between one group and the other, and every person speaking multiple languages, often from wholly distinct language families;
4. In all non-State free communities, there's one or more communication languages (linguae francae) that serve as a common medium between different peoples and cultures.
so the question is not "why don't we all have a common language" vs. "why don't we all keep our ancestral language". this problem is solved. just speak them both. look at any indigenous people ever, they're already doing it and always have.
no, the question is "how come monolingualism is a thing now". what took our languages away from us. and the answer is colonisation. colonisation destroys this natural pattern. it often does that deliberately, with linguistic repression (e.g. in Brazil the indigenous Tupi languages, called "general languages", were the most widely spoken by everyone including white Portuguese settlers, learned on the cradle; until the colonisers decided to make them illegal). but colonisation also destroys multilingualism incidentally, with all sorts of toxic social structures. because the State wants to pretend it can organise a large area with millions of people, it needs uniformity, legibility, standardisation; thus official languages, prescriptive dialects, pasteurised education and media set exclusively in the government-approved language. this creates a situation where indigenous and minority forms (languages, dialects, variants) are seen as wrong, ugly, ignorant, uncivilised, thuggish, rural etc. this makes parents and elders feel like they cannot let their variations pass onto the babies, the babies need the prestige coloniser language _exclusively_ to get ahead in life, avoid discrimination, get a job etc. this is a tragedy because, as established above, babies are perfectly able to learn both the coloniser language and one or more indigenous languages; but monolingual culture obscures that fact. the tint of prestige and depreciation given to each side, allied with explicit repression, prevents babies from having the opportunity to grow up multilingual.
this process is about to kill about half of the languages of the world, within our lifetimes. most of these languages aren't written and carry unique cultural perspectives and knowledge (e.g. ethnobotanics). most of them are now only spoken by gray-haired elders. when the elders die, all that cultural heritage is going to disappear from the world forever in a puff of smoke for no good reason.
(when I was a professional researcher, my job was to record endangered dialects, while we can. but my contract ended and it's hard to get funding for more. so now I spend my days filling computer security certification forms instead.)
as a fun fact: the colonial processes that erase linguistic and cultural diversity are the same ones that erase ecological diversity. consequently, the leftover pockets of high multilingualism that the State didn't steamroll yet are geographically correlated with the biodiversity sanctuaries that haven't been fully razed down yet: the Amazon, North America, Australia, Pacific islands...

not to do oppression olympics but, while being trans is what gets all publicity as a marginal, I would estimate that basically all the political and legal threat that me and my family live under in Germany isn't due to me being trans, but to being immigrants from the Global South.
like sure I had problems in academia due to being trans, but the laws and the institution both were firmly on my side. there's nothing about my transness that might get me out of a job and my entire family kicked over the ocean in (counts on her fingers) 5 months unless I do a periodic process of justifying our existence that last time took 18 months and this time they'll only take at 3 from the deadline. a name change may be slow but it's peanuts compared to the Ausländerbehörde. being a lesbian doesn't disqualify me from voting or working freelance or joining a coop, and my transness doesn't mean that any crime I might commit including punching a nazi, graffiting a kitty on a ruined wall, or joining a Palestine protest can incur immediate life-changing irreversible extrajudicial punishment (deportation).
also, almost all the harassment and violence I've gotten on the streets wasn't due to being trans either, but very specifically due to opposing Nazism. the most calculatedly risky thing you can wear in Germany isn't a rainbow pin, it's an antifa one.
and that's with me being a white migra. if I was BIPoC or looked "Arab" I am sure that my ethnicity would cause the majority of my discrimination. my nonwhite friends report a frequency of harassment that makes everything I experienced pale by comparison (pun not intended), including the stories I've heard from one Brazilian friend who would pass as "white" back home but is read as "Turk" by the Germans.

I love the trope of themed gangs with matching uniforms, I really do. it always put my mind to questions like: who makes these uniforms? the gangs don't have factories, right, do they just have an oldschool tailor? can the same tailor make uniforms for several gangs or this is taboo like being an arms dealer selling to all sides? do they bribe a tailor to convince a rival gang to adopt a cool but impractical piece in their uniform? or do they first hit a fast fashion store and see easily procured, cheap clothing first and then built their gang outfit from that? is there drama with like, this gang member has a high femme style but she's in the "black overalls over white shirt and bowtie" gang, so she starts styling it with colourful accessories and makeup, and this isn't _against_ what the boss decreed but the local overseer picks on her for it?

- physical buttons (not touch or digital)
- absence of microchips and complex PCBs (e.g. magnet-based rice cooker)
- metal parts
- tech that is easy to understand, access and modify (e.g. simple dishwasher)
- parameters > preset menus (e.g. food drier has a "timer" knob and a "temperature" knob rather than buttons for "fruit", "mushrooms", "jerky" etc.)
- expendable components are standard and replaceable (e.g. batteries, light bulbs)
- absence of apps
- absence of Internet
- absence of "AI"
- no electricity > electricity (e.g. analog multimeter, thermometer, scale)
- plugged on > battery power
- wired > wireless

I do feel like the ability to enjoy each day as it comes, to find ways to build meaning and find life to be worth it every day, is the most important apocalypse collapse survival bushcraft bunker skill I know, by a large margin. it's the most important thing I have to teach my kids, though I don't know how to teach it, I can just model it and hope it's contagious.
