I don't inherently believe that governments / nations have a right to exist. I believe people have a right to exist, but if the entities they form or allow to persist become so malign as to perpetrate genocide and constantly wage aggressive war, then I think there is a sort of global duty to ensure that system be dissolved. We didn't say that Nazi Germany had an inherent right to exist.

Then change the law to actually reflect that, because otherwise, it's just at the whims of the current administration and what they define as peace. Germany is currently the second largest backer of the Israeli state war machine and a major base for US interests in Europe. China is understandably pissed about the whole situation and has responded by throwing some elbows. Ships under Panamanian registry are getting inspected by China at a very high rate and they're finding lots of "you've got to fix this rusty whatever if you want to use our port" type problems. They're being slow with the inspections, too, which means a lot of unhappy ship owners with vessels and cargos sitting around not making money.

So, found out a little more info about the Panama situation. So, Panama's government outright physically seized a bunch of major port facilities operated by China at either end of the canal after a judicial ruling held that now, after some 30 years, the framework under which they were operating was unconstitutional. Thirty years, folks. This also came after considerable US pressure to force the sale to who Trump's regime wanted. When that deal fell through, the facilities were seized outright.

This seems very contrary to the spirit of EU law, which allows people of any member the nation to move to any other, study there, work there, etc. This is fundamentally restraint on the free movement of people as well as being discriminatory based on sex and age.

So, Israel/US went and started attacking Iran's gas production and it appears that Iran responded by directly attacking Qatar's Ras Laffan industrial facility. They got in a solid hit with 1 of 5 missiles which were launched and it's caused a chain of fires. This is the largest LNG facility in the world and Qatar produces 1/5th of the total global supply of LNG - or did.

Iran should demand Trump's head on a plate and the world should give it to them. The US needs to be understood as a global pariah which can't be appeased and acts too rashly to be ignored. Trump is the whole world's problem now. He's cut off 1/5th of the world's oil supply, to say nothing of the natural gas and fertilizer.

That's about a thousand miles of coastline, btw. I don't see a lot of militarily viable alternatives, as the US doesn't have nearly enough vessels to run picket duty and escort type roles. We don't have enough smaller vessels capable of swatting drones, uncrewed surface vessels, etc.
The numbers I'm hearing is that a US convoy system would reduce traffic from about 135 Hormuz transits a day to a tenth that.
You can see why he's so desperate to rope in other country's navies.

Even if Iran's industry gets completely flattened, they're likely going to be able to keep the Strait of Hormuz in peril for a long time to come. They're far more capable than the Houthis and had a lot of time to prepare for just such a situation. And it appears they've done just that. My guess is the only way it can be safely opened is a capitulation or the US side, or the US ends up invading Iran at least to the extent of holding the coastal areas from which attacks would launch.

Thing is, the US thinks they can win this by breaking stuff and then breaking some more stuff. Iran knows they're not a match. They're fighting asymmetrically. They're fighting not to win, but to punish. The question is how long they can continue to economically punish the US (and the whole world for standing back and allowing America's mad king to do stupid ass shit) by keeping 1/5th of the world's oil from flowing.

I think we can say that the US seems to have bombed Kharg island and hasn't claimed to have attacked any of the actual oil industry involved targets on the island. So, is this the destination for those couple thousand US Marines who are headed to the gulf? That would be my guess. They're softening up the island in preparation to take it and deny Iran an oil export capability.

Next strikes were five bombs on some pretty indistinct targets between two sets of what appear to be pipelines meeting at an acute angle. There are a few places meeting that description on the island, but hard to narrow it down from the images provided.

The second bloom appears to be just to the left of the main terminal building and there is what looks like a polygonal building sticking out there. My guess is they hit the airport's control tower. This is not exactly the sort of place with Google Maps Streeview.

US Centcom has released images of the strikes. I'm not sure that they've been geolocated by independent sources yet, but the US claims this is Kharg island they're bombing. It does look like bombing is the operative word here. These look like gravity bombs with a very vertical trajectory to me. Are we seeing JDAM equipped gravity bombs here? So, the US has apparently started bombing Kharg island. This is Iran's main oil export facility, handling like 90% of its oil exports. If Iran is prevented from exporting oil and can no longer derive a national benefit from keeping the strait open, that gives them a good motivation to further penalizing the US and US allies in the gulf for allowing this to happen. They'll mine the strait, because they'll have no reason not to at that point.

The system of international law has become meaningless, because there are no practical enforcement mechanisms. The biggest players are immune to it and it has only been actioned up when those big players have decided to use it as a stick against some small player.
Laws are only meaningful when there is enforcement.

They've had recent large scale protests there which seemed to have had a restoration of the monarchy bent to them (or at least that's what the monarchists wishing to be restored to power have claimed). But how many of the people who lead those protests are now dead or in jail? The US may have missed its window due to poor timing/preparedness. Even if the regime were overthrown, no guarantee what emerges in its place would be in any way in line with what the Trump regime wants.

We're in a position of probably needing to launch a massive ground invasion of Iran to actually prevent them from crossing the nuclear finishing line (assuming they haven't simply built ~3 WW2 class devices out of sub weapon's grade material). We used up most of the US stockpile of deep strike conventional munitions, so the alternative for no boots on the ground is basically tactical nukes. Assuming we knew where all the facilities were.

Everything the US has done since then has made the situation worse. We're no longer any sort of partner on security. We're a danger to keep in the loop on intelligence and potential source of extortion if a nation relies to heavily on US made weapons systems (or anything else). US security guarantees might as well be printed on toilet paper. Ukraine gave up not just its nukes, but also its long range bombers and air launched cruise missiles, of much the same sort which Russia has used to attack Ukraine with impunity, beyond the reach of reprisal against the launching bombers.
The US didn't backstop Ukraine's security when Russia decided to invade and annex Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014. US security guarantees became worthless paper at that point.

I wrote earlier about how the system needs options more than simply finding defendants not guilty. In my opinion, juries should be able to find that someone was maliciously prosecuted. They should be able to rebuke the system itself and to levy fines against it. They should be able to compensate defense lawyers and award punitive damages. The prosecutorial system should fear that the laws that they're trying people under are fundamentally at odds with the will of the actual people.

I had a completely mainstream client ask me to find them a new laptop that would run Linux without much fiddling. They then asked me to make sure that it didn't have a co-pilot key. They hate their numerous unasked for brushes with AI that much. I've not had a lot of clients move off Windows yet, but have a ton who are trying Libre Office. They hate that Microsoft felt it okay to charge them more for a forced feature they explicitly don't want.

The US is no longer the indispensable nation and the world could restructure it's trade flows and IP laws so as to isolate a bellicose US. Indeed, I consider it vital that they do so. Too many countries have made themselves far too dependent on the US and the regime is now willing to use that for naked coercion. ICE's only legal argument in defense of its actions was that Renee Good was somehow perceived to be a vehicular threat to the officer who shot her. After she was shot, she was no longer any sort of threat and so denial of care is simply every ICE person on the scene deciding she needed to be dead. Not simply shot, but dead. It is utterly indefensible and IMO should make everyone there legally culpable in her murder.

#106: St Mary's Carmelite Friary in Rathmulan. This is the reverse of Quin. This place started out as a friary and then was occupied by soldiers and converted into a castle by Bishop Knox. Doors and windows were blocked up and firing ports created. Repulsed a Jacobite allied attack in 1689.

#96: Newtown Castle near Ballyvaughan. This is a 1 of 1 oddball original. It's a round tower house (almost non-existent in Ireland) with a very tall pyramidal base and window slits designed for plunging fire at attackers at said base. Has an unusual door set high up on the side of the tower whose use is highly speculative. Escape rope ladder?
On the grounds of an art college which was vacant when I visited. Tower door was unlocked, so I explored.

#93: Muckross Road Tower House in Killarney. Tower house which was later shortened and given a complex pitched roof and rewindowed to be more suitable as a more modern dwelling. Very weird appearance.

#92: The Mound of Down, Downpatrick. Very hard to convey this one in a photo. It's a motte like structure with a scooped out side set atop a much larger earlier earthwork (possible hill-fort or ceremonial site). Thought to have been thrown up in a hurry by Sir John de Courcy and possibly never finished. It may have been instrumental in winning him Ulster. The larger earthwork was probably not defensible by the small number of men he had, so he built a smaller one which was. That's the theory.

#91 Moone Tower - Adjacent to Moone Abbey and later day manor. This is believed to be a so-called Ten Pound Tower - built as part of a sort of rebate scheme to fortify the English pale by building lots of small defensive towers like this one. They ten to be built to the precise dimensions required by the act in order to claim their rebate. This one had a story added later and was finally converted entirely into one giant Doocot.

#84: Mashanaglass Castle near Macroom. A fascinating and very unusual tower house which I would classify as a Z plan. Has Sharp triangular towers projecting from opposite corners of the rectangular central tower. They only went up a couple stories and had very limited space due to their triangular shape, but had gun ports for firing down the wall lengths. Difficult one to find.
