Our Channels work by automatically sharing public content which uses hand-picked hashtags (or is posted by a featured user). Unfortunately, we aren't able to vet all posts for ALT text.
We've added automatic ALT text to our services to try and prevent this but for users on different servers, or who choose not to use it, this makes little difference.
We'd recommend letting posters know the importance of ALT text to try and help them understand why it matters.

An estimated 5.56 billion people have access to the internet. Across social media there are 5.24 billion individual accounts. But there's only a handful of platform owners.
Something isn't adding up.
This gap leaves room for all sorts of dodgy dealing, god-like complexes, and unlawful behaviour.

Have you changed your behaviour online since the UK's Online Safety Act began enforcing age restrictions on certain platforms and content?
We're curious to know how the Online Safety Act is affecting the day to day social media usage of people on the Fediverse - UK and beyond. Changes can be as simple as not using a feature anymore, to fully avoiding a platform.

Today, Amnesty International have shared their report into X's part in the UK 'Race Riots' last year.
Unsurprisingly, their findings highlighted that the design choices within X contributed to spreading of false claims and ultimately the violence we saw across the UK last year against Muslims and migrants following the murder of two young girls.

The Fediverse still has a lot of work to do, it's true, but hopefully the efforts of many projects will start fixing some of these problems. Then, perhaps, we can start rebuilding the communities for the many marginalised groups who don't feel welcome here.
