It’s always nice reading what others are doing in this space! I went through a similar journey as you last year, event tried GoatCounter for a while, but I just hated its design. 😅
So I settled with Umami, but that turned unreasonably hard to maintain on my hosting provider of choice…so I’m currently building my own system. 🤣
Let’s see how that goes.

I’ve been quite successful with using webhooks which call a bash script on an Uberspace, nice and simple. Theoretically that should work on pretty much any VPN without much setup and it’s portable once it was configured once. Is that something you’d be interested in, or is that going too deep into the nitty gritty? 🤔

Seems like at Apple not many do either. 😅
I think I’ll hold off upgrading more critical devices like phone and laptop for now. 😅 Maybe they just need another round of polishing, but tbh I don’t have high hopes.

Just finished reading “The Lotus Empire” by Tasha Suri.
It was a bit of a drag to get through this one. The characters’ motivations felt all over the place, and the story was all too predictable.
Like many books, it had its moments, though. I liked how big and whole the world grew compared to the first book in the series, and you cannot help but get attached to some of the characters when they are with you for so long.
3/10, only finished it because I started.

You might already know them, but there’s uLauncher (https://ulauncher.io/) and Albert (https://github.com/albertlauncher/albert).
I never used Raycast, but I have a feeling it has a lot more features than these two, but maybe they’re a start with a way to build your own extensions that fit your needs?

I have a textarea with some decorations overlaid on top. The decorations need to receive pointerenter and pointerleave events, but should pass anything else down to the textarea below as to not interfere with text selection and editing. 🤔

Just finished reading “The Jasmin Throne” by Tasha Suri. It took me a while to get into the book, the beginning felt a little too slow and drawn out, so much so that I thought I had reached the conclusion by the second third of the novel, after which the pace picked up dramatically and I started enjoying the journey.
It definitely was interesting to read fantasy not based in a form of medieval Europe.
6/10, curious how the journey will continue.

I haven’t really written anything down, but I’ve been using it at work and for some personal projects.
I kept the setup really simple, mostly using task lists. The workflow is basically a daily note for everything coming up during a day and project specific notes with timestamps.
There’s also a kanban-plugin that I might try out eventually, but so far, nested task lists have served me well. 😊

If I ever started a cooking blog, I’d probably call it “Rob’n’Cook” to gather all the recipes out there, strip away the fluff so people could just cook them and most recipes on the internet seem “stolen” from one place or the other anyway. 🤔😅

I totally get how that would be important! I’m curious, what exactly makes Page CMS so hassle-free in your opinion? 🤔
Is it the simple login with GitHub and then being able to work on things straight away? (Although I do believe you have to write at least a config file, right?)

If you enjoy Pages, you might also like @npub1nx8…kl34 — it does something very similar, but works with any Git provider, not just GitHub. 😊
There’s a little more to configure (because it’s more powerful), but you can do so without having to write a config file, as there’s visual editors to do all of it. 😊

I’ve got an Uberspace where I’m running it. 😊 That’s pretty much as simple as it gets since they provide everything it needs (Node, a reverse proxy, a way to run and restart it automatically).
Umami requires a bit much RAM to build new versions, but running it as a two-user instance with a bunch of low-traffic sites doesn’t seem to be using a lot of resources. 😊

I’ve been wondering as well. 😅 On mobile, I’ve been able to get around it in a very specific case by preventing touchstart events at the screen edges and running my own logic, but it breaks as soon as someone swipes while momentum scrolling is going, because that prevents touchstart events from firing. 🙄
It’s also a hack and can’t be used everywhere.
As often with Safari, it’s a mess. 😒

I’m not quite sure I like the amount of motion either, but I loved the arrows and the ergonomy they provided.

When you open the App Store and top on one of the promoted apps that opens a view with a header image and some text. Like a full screen overlay. 🤔
I don’t think it has to feel wrong motion wise if it’s implemented right—emphasis on being implemented right. 😅

For example I like the way the banners of promoted apps work in the AppStore. You can close them either by swiping down or from the left (not from the right though, for whatever reason).
The arrow is the motion and newer native apps also shrink the current view to reveal the one below. But the point of the arrow being the motion is that it isn’t tied to the screen transition. You can close a modal with it which might transition down, or you can have a classic back navigation.

Well on Android the gesture is universal, it always works and there’s nothing devs can do about it as far as I know (in games you have to “double swipe” kind of like with the gesture bar on iOS. So you just don’t get the issues you have on iOS where it’s inconsistent between apps.
So maybe if Apple came up with a prescriptive gesture that always works and supported their motion model, it would be better. 🤔

I’m not a fan of the full screen page switching animation (the new page sliding on top of the old one), but that may be a matter of taste.
Typically, on Android, there’s just an arrow animation when swiping to go back and that simply works on both sides without causing confusion in the motion.
You’re right about first party apps limiting it to the edge, I can’t think of any either right now. But YouTube, Telegram and others don’t.

I just finished reading “Oathbringer” by Brandon Sanderson.
This third book was the first where I felt the drag of such a long series. Things just felt too drawn out, slow. There seemed to have been a strong undertone of mental illness and addiction, which in itself is nothing bad, but exhausted me at times.
To be honest, I was planning on giving this book a lower rating, but as with “Edgedancer”, the final part managed to truly grip me again.

I can’t currently use my left hand very well, so I’m doing everything with my right hand. In my Pro Max reaching over all the way to the left to swipe back is quite the stretch. I wish I could just swipe from the right edge where my thumb already rests.
This contradicts my point about it being an issue when the gesture isn’t limited to the edge because it works in my favour in this case, but again it’s not consistent. Some apps limit it, some don’t. 😅

Yeah, I’m sure it has something to do with that. But have you truly never gotten stuck and had to think twice on how to get back? It’s always frustrating when it happens to me.
I’m also not talking about abandoning working concepts, but improving what’s there not to appease Android users (who are probably more than happy to stay on Android) but to improve the experience for everyone. There might be better ways than how Android does it, but for me the current iOS state isn’t it. 😅

No, it works sometimes, but not every time. Like here while I’m writing this reply, I have to swipe down to close it, same with most apps with a tab bar, you have to use the bar to navigate. Not to mention you have to swipe up to get out of apps. It’s hugely inconsistent when coming from Android.
I know it makes sense sometimes (a bottom sheet slides over, so you slide down to close it) and with time you get used to it, but I still don’t think it’s as intuitive or ergonomic. 😅

Yeah…although in this case it’s a shame, it was such a well designed app. 😅 Like a toned down AE that worked in your browser. Like Rive, but polished and less geared towards state machines and game engines and more towards nice and simple animations for videos, the web and apps. 😊
I guess they couldn’t monetise it properly, and people rightfully think there’s too many apps like that already. 😅

So I just put down “Edgedancer” by Brandon Sanderson and to be honest, for most of the novella, I thought it mediocre. I don’t really like Lift as a character, although undeniably she’s very…pronounced. The last few pages made me think otherwise and I did enjoy reading the book in the end.
6/10, and I’m only slightly mad that I’m really craving pancakes now and don’t have any.

Just turned the last page on “Words of Radiance” by Brandon Sanderson and while this book certainly held my attention, it couldn’t quite match the quality, engagement and magic of the first book.
While the world is more established and easier to follow, I’m having an increasingly hard time keeping track of the minor characters which only show up in interludes or quick mentions.
Still, I’m excited to read on. 7/10

it feels so unengaging though, sure it has a bit more focus on design, but besides that, what makes it better than something like NetNewsWire? 🤔
I think for myself I’ve just found that I want my newsfeed to be a little more alive than a list of truncated headlines with the occasional tiny image. 😅 Even though that’s not exactly in line with the principles of traditional RSS readers. 😊

yeah, it’s not for people who want the “authentic” RSS experience. But doesn’t the new version of Reeder do kind of the same? 😅 I tried that as well and absolutely didn’t like it.
Funny how we have opposite experiences in that regard. 😊
feeeed has been around since 2023 and was recently updated, so for the time being I think I’m fine, but yeah who knows what happens in the long run. I guess we’ll see. 🤷

I just found that they were trying to monetise it too much. There’s so many ads shoved in and you’re really limited with what you can upload without paying, plus I’ve found there wasn’t any good interaction anymore and a shift from UI designs to illustrations and other types of design. It all started feeling so fake to me, which wasn’t how it felt when I started using it. 😅

Just finished reading “The Way of Kings” by Brandon Sanderson. At first, I was a bit thrown off by all the odd fantasy names and concepts, but once I got over that, the story absolutely pulled me in and made the book hard to put down.
Very impressive, I’m curios if the other books in the series can do this first instalment justice. Long series unfortunately have a tendency to drag.
9/10, can recommend.

Just log in with your Mastodon account like you would into any other 3rd party client and you can enjoy specific content in a UI geared to that — without excluding your followers and no need for cross posting. 👌
And you could even interact / reply while using your regular client. 😊

So I’m thinking of turning an old #Linux tower into a gaming console for the living room. Ideally, I’d want to run the OS experience the #SteamDeck has on it, but sadly it has an #nvidia GPU…
There are options such as #Bazzite, but I’m wondering if that’s too bloated? Would @npub1hpw…cd0d #Silverblue be a good fit instead? 🤔
The system should be extremely low maintenance and ideally boot straight into Steam Big Picture.

true you can’t SSH back in if the reboot fails, but wouldn’t that be the same if you did the restart through the UI? 🤔 Nothing wrong with that either though! That’s how I did it on DO for a while, too. 😊

I think you should be able to reboot straight from the command line instead of having to go to the Hetzner UI. 😊
Also, what terminal is that in the hero image? I’ve been using Hyper on Mac but it’s been unmaintained for a while now and I’m in the market for a good looking alternative. 😅

yeah as usual there’s tradeoffs on both sides. 😅
I think following the Astro model would be good: when doing the initial generation, pull the newest data and include that in the generated markup. When the client hydrates, it can fetch the newest data. If JS is disabled or fails to load, users only end up with outdated comments. 😊 But that doesn’t solve the at least double rebuild necessary when publishing the post and then posting about it on Mastodon and adding the URL. 😅

That’s the way I think most people do it (perhaps minus the cron-job, typically it’s done more via client-side JS). I just feel like that’s really inefficient? Like even if it builds fast, that’s a lot of regeneration with no changes. 🤔
I’m always trying to find to keep generations at a minimum. 😅 Still looking forward to that post though! 😊

I wish Astro would just let us use the query parameter in the getStaticPaths() function. 😔 That way you could still use the dynamic option but without having to enable hybrid mode. 😅

Do you use Astro in hybrid mode? I noticed you have the interact on Mastodon system for comments. If you’re running statically, how do you go about getting the Mastodon post URL into the markup? 🤔
