Colour me sceptical.
mCDR (Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal) is an umbrella term which encompasses things from looking after mangroves and seagrasses (good stuff) to borderline geoengineering and dumping a variety of materials into the ocean (questionable and even probably bad stuff).
So far it has been mostly proven to be an efficient mechanism for dodgy start-ups to sell carbon credits and do greenwashing.

It's March 15th, seven years on from New Zealand's worst terrorist attack, the white supremacist mosque shootings in Christchurch.
Sadly, we seem to be doing absolutely nothing to mark the date, remember or learn. Quite the opposite.
The mere idea of kindness, inclusion and empathy is now scorned by our so-called leaders. Xenophobia, racism and a christofascist minority are loud and rampant, with not a peep from the establishment.
Islamophobia underlies the war that our government has so far been unable to condemn and take distance from. A genocide continues to be livestreamed for the world to see.

Little One has friends with two mums, two dads, a single mum, an adopted family, divorced parents and a friendly adult who has transitioned their gender while we knew them.
We've been to drag queen story times, which Little One enjoys, because dressing up and telling stories and singing is Fun.

Many humans have become pretty good at pretending things are not happening.
Most pretend covid is gone and people are not getting sick anymore, their bodies, brains and immune systems are just fine. No matter how many times they are infected.
Most pretend the climate and biodiversity crisis is not happening, or not so bad, or not quite yet in any case. And the catastrophic weather events, the droughts, fires, floods, and cyclones are not for us to worry about. At least not yet, maybe our kids will have to deal with them.
Most pretend a genocide is not ongoing. Along with multiple wars, all of which are facilitated by the same weapon manufacturers. The same profiteers.
They pretend those weapons, those surveillance systems won't be turned against them. They pretend they're safe.
Most pretend that billionaires are good and successful, and occasionally donating crumbs out of their unimaginable hoards of wealth makes them philanthropists.
Most pretend that they weren't already found out to be corrupt, hiding their wealth in tax havens and now they can pretend that they were not all linked together, in a web of power, lies, torture, human trafficking and abuse.
But the Emperor has no clothes.
And some of us will not shut up about it.
Some of us still think that the truth matters and eventually, we will change all these things.

Twitter used to be the place where things like today's events in Minnesota would spark social movements on the streets.
Xitter is now, (and probably because of this) as you all know, a cesspool of AI slop, deepfake porn adjacent material and even CSAM. Social movements and minorities are systematically shut down and their reach limited, drowning them out.
So maybe some people will come looking for an alternative, maybe they will post things that upset you, maybe they won't use the CW you want or the hashtags that would be appropriate.
Maybe we should tolerate some temporary discomfort so that social movements can organise and grow organically, outside of corporate networks.

I guess what grates me about the "imagine if Greenland/Taiwan/Canada is next" takes, is that they carry the implication that the fact this is ACTUALLY happening in Venezuela is expected, or not as bad as it would be if it affects wealthier/whiter people.
The global south continues to be seen as a sacrifice area, where people are expected to be exploited, colonised and killed. It's just how things go, and when they get worse the real problem is that maybe the violence seems closer to coming for other people, someone who actually matters.
It has echoes of the reporting at the beginning of the Ukraine invasion, when journos were astounded this could happen to Europeans, actual people. Not like those brown people in the global south, constantly bombed, exploited, subjugated or at war.

I am late to the party for this one, but if you think you'd like a slightly surreal, radically anti-capitalist spin on the super hero story tropes, "I'm a Virgo" is a great watch.
It is a bit silly at times, but has an interesting take on issues of racism, coming of age and liberation through solidarity. Big fan of the character of Jones, the communist organiser, and her storytelling powers.
It's from Boots Riley, who also made "Sorry to bother you", which I loved. He is a self declared communist, and it shows on his work. So if you liked that, this will be up your alley.
We really enjoyed the first season and are interested in a second one, if it is ever released.

Was just reminded of Mars Attacks!, the satirical 1996 Tim Burton film where brainy skull-like aliens invade earth and communicate only with a series of AT-AT sounds.
In the film, humans build a machine to translate their language and it turns out they keep saying they want peace and friendship with humanity. But they also keep murdering everyone and destroying earth, while saying they just want to be friends.
They are lying. Or perhaps the machine is just useless at translating.
Regardless, humans get nearly obliterated by the martians, while expecting their message of friendship to match their actions at some point.

Had not had something like this happen in a while.
Riding my bike back home, a car passes me and some angry dude yells something. Of course he's caught up in traffic a little bit further ahead so I approach and say "what's your problem?"
-you shouldn't be on the road!
"so where should I be?"
He insists (wrongly) I shouldn't be on the road, gets off the car approaches me and threatens to punch me.
I'm not afraid and I dare him to do it, see how it works out for him. Plenty of witnesses and cameras on my bike, plus a very embarrassed woman still in the car with him.
He returns to his car, sits there and sulks.
I take my phone out, snap a picture of his car, smile and wave goodbye.
He's still sitting in traffic, probably.
Violently ignorant.

Go ask a Muslim friend how easy it is for them to get labeled as a "terrorist", "ISIS", "Radical Islamist", etc just for having anything on them on Arabic script, wearing a hijab or simply saying "Allah Akbar".
As a Colombian I know how much effort I have to put in to prove I am not a drug dealer every time I travel.
Compare that with what a given rich white fascist gets away with and how much they get the "benefit of the doubt".

I don't necessarily disagree that phones might be harmful for kids' development.
I just don't know if they're nearly as harmful as say, repeated covid infections, a collapsing biosphere, a justifiably bleak vision of their future, or even a prevalent lack of agency, independence, and spaces for socialisation.
I'd focus on those first. Then phones.

I'm sure there's an untapped market for "Dumb" tech. Bonus points for repairable, dumb tech.
No AI assistants, no Internet connection, no DRM or login needed.
Just a toaster that makes toast, a TV that plays only what you put in it, with repair kits, spare parts available, easy to reach guts and accessible schematics, diagrams and instructions.
I know I'd buy no other brands if just one offered that to me.

I'd be lying if I said I don't miss crowded parties in New Year. Or weird live gigs in dive bars (miss you Whammy, so long Wine Cellar, never said goodbye).
But I'm proud that this little whānau is nearly at year 5 of the pandemic era and, as far as we know, remain uninfected. There's enormous luck and privilege in that result, but also caution, hard work and sacrifice.
May public health one day be publicly valued again. May we heed science and do what we know is best, not what is profitable.

The answer was beautiful and simple:
Imagine you're telling a dear friend on the phone what you are seeing.
That's it.
What's important is what you would want your friend to know about the picture.
