it's more a question of the complexity in both technical debt and design. Things need to be refactored, and it ain't chittlins.
The fundamental concept of NixOS is to be fully reproducible and the big gripe with flakes is that it supposedly isn't - or that it breaks with a core concept.
There's been problems with governance, internal turmoil and repression there of.

#NixOS will probably be great - 10 years down the line - as the Nix community has to both maintain a massive assortment of packages WHILE refactoring #Nix & #Nixpkgs according to their RFCs.
I think the idea is to take enough functionality out of nix and into nixpkgs, to the point where they can offer an enterprise edition of nixpkgs. #Flakes also needs to be replaced, apparently.

Also, if you scroll down on the Aves regular version, #FDroid warns you that it's anti features is use of #Google proprietary libraries.

If you are a maintainer of #nix, #nixpkgs or #nixos: listen up.
You've got about 2 years or so being a serious contender, until someone like #lix or even #ostree with #ComposeFS comes in and eats your lunch.
Part and parcel of that is the community, the language, the security of knowing that there is culpability and responsibility.
Linus Torvalds had to walk it off because an entire foundation told him to. If the nix "community" is beyond this, why give #DeterminateSystems contracts?

This isn't something you can hide anymore. This will be clear to anyone with access to an LLM and the wherewithall to see what defines community morale.
Basically this means that as I've always said: THE #COC IS OPTIONAL, and that is intentional. Now you can allow people to play favourites, have insider cliques, enforcers, yada-yada-yada and so forth.

When it comes to #Linux and packages for the user, #Flatpak for when you need shared dependencies and #AppImage for when you need a portable app. Basically we've already solved both the "app store" and "downloadable executable" problems.

So if we really believe in a free market, we should believe that markets being made cannot be free, for the user, the producer or the publisher. They can verily be systems that are predatory and exploitative of one or more parts.
We cannot exploit the user, the creator or the publisher. This cannot be overstated. In the west it's gotten too normal to centralise ownership and to exploit people. This is something we have to be mindful of.

If we then come up with some great idea for say a client side algorithm, or some alternative ad networking technology, you can then wrap that up in a plan for an organization and apply for funding.
From that you can start figuring out the various ways to make a business off the resulting systems.
But they have to be open, give power to the user and allow for competition. This is why #OpenSource is so important, because it levels the playing field.

We can fall back to Silicon Valley, we can fall back to Wall Street, we can fall back to London City, but the great thing about the fediverse is that people can ignore all that, filter it away, etc.

I think the one thing you have to be aware of in regards to denizens of the #fediverse is that they are verily fatigued by large commercial platforms because of the #ads, the predatory #algorithms, #darkdesignpatterns, #tracking all stemming from the need to #monetize.
Each of those points are important because something's shouldn't be monetized, like #databrokering.
That's why I am suggesting client side algorithmic discovery, or a private and safe alt.

How about this though: spin off the discoverability database to itself and maintain it as an #OpenData project.
Anyone who wants to participate could mark their account or content as discoverable and be included.
There could be a CoC to prevent abuse and guarantees that creators wouldn't be excluded by virtue of licensing.

The big iffy issue about algorithms is how it gives vendors too much power. Basically a vendor can "play favorites" and prevent certain content creators from being discovered, or push their favorites.
Consider how vendors like YouTube and Instagram started to push the creators they wanted you to see - despite what the user might want to see.
In essence, my biggest reason for client side algorithms is to take that power out of the vendors hands.

I think "the other side" has valid points, and that's why I'm thinking of client-side discovery algorithms - but it's not an easy problem.
If the client is the one who is doing the sorting and selecting, it means the server will have to distribute MASSIVE amounts of data all the time to clients so that user preferences can be widdled down on the users side.
But is there a middle way? Can the task be split up so that some if not all privacy is maintained?

Unfortunately I don't know if anyone else is talking about this, mostly because one side is against #DiscoveryAlgorithms since they feel typical sorting functions should be enough, and the other side thinks that letting clients handle it would mean too much complexity and bandwidth usage.
There are also those who hate any form of algorithms spreading content at all, and those who want their algorithm to be secret sauce.

The #fediverse needs to come to terms with one thing: on content platforms, chronological ordering is probably good for your subscription feeds, but for the #discovery feed the average user actually WANTS an #algorithm.
Instead of kicking your feet in anger, release your anxiety and think for one moment.
Wouldn't it be better to formalize #discovery algorithms as #opensource? To create programmable interfaces server side so that the user can define their algorithm client side?

but the absolute best thing would be not to share music across the #fediverse, because that would be illegal, but to create some sort of shared statistical engine for use in creating playlists.
So #Funkwhale should really start figuring out a way towards disseminating plays across #ActivityPub, not for social interaction, but merely for dispersal of statistical data.
This could help private cloud music services to get algorithms in place so they too can have "Discovery" features.

so let's say you put $20 into a wallet each month. That means you have $20 to listen for. You can add more, or less even.
For each playable second you pay $0.05, which isn't a whole heckin lot, but could basically add up if you stream a lot.
You'd also have to by default not continuously be playing music, or you'd drain the user of their funds.
But yeah, you see the problem. Falling asleep and suddenly you've spent all your money on some random playlist lol.

The biggest idea I've ever had in regards to this, whereby "big" means costly in regards to organizational power, lawyer fees, etc is actually letting the user pay-per-listen - i.e the service would be counting each playable minute to sum up with a lump sum who you've been listening to.
Right now it's statistically rounding up who percentage wise has been played the most and then the terms of agreement duely apply, which has been mediated between big publishers and big streaming.

That might be the revolution we all need. Nobody's gonna make any money off publishing, but at least you take it away from the likes of #Spotify and #Tidal who will actively try to fool you into giving more money to them and theirs than to the human artists and musicians you'd want to support.

Honestly, lately I've been thinking of creating middleware - or integration - for #Funkwhale to interface with PRO's (or "Performing Rights Organizations").
In Norway we have TONO, which takes something like 5 Norwegian cent per minute played + yearly costs.
You read that right, I am thinking of starting my own streaming service using #Funkwhale lol
It basically means that I'll hopefully get to cover the costs if I get enough users a month.

Buying albums, EP's and singles to then put it up in a private cloud storage is the ethical way to stream music.

But I have been thoroughly considering moving to #Tidal - for various reasons.
But the second they get too big is the second they abuse their position of influence. You can set your clock to it.
Tidal was also caught by the Norwegian PRO called Tono in artificially inflating the numbers for - among others - Beyonce.

like I said, the only ones who benefit from streaming are mostly the publishers.
Consumers got a lot cheaper music thanks to it, and ngl: I have stopped checking releases because #Spotify does it for me lol
Intrinsically that's also a problem, that Spotify has scanned and organized all the world's music with the help of users as the human factor.
The "Discovery" feature is partyl dangerous because it more effectively fills the role of DJs and label promoters.

#Fedora really tipped #Ubuntu from its perch, and #uBlue as well as #Bazzite are examples of that.
Don't get me wrong, #Mint and even #Arch are still the everyman distros, but point me to another #libre distribution that has pushed the envelope as much as Fedora has.
#Nouveau, #Wayland, #PipeWire, #Ostree, etc. When it comes to #Linux, Fedora is a technology leader, and its users & organizational governance is key to that success.
