50 years ago, 90% of Iceland's women went on strike to protest the gender pay gap. 25,000 gathered in the center of Reykjavík — a remarkable turnout given that the country's population was less than 220,000 at the time. Their efforts worked: The world's first female elected president took office five years later, and with successive strikes over the subsequent decades, the gender pay gap has been closed by more than 90%. The Conservative premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has accused the Edmonton Public School Board of "vicious compliance" after the board banned 200 titles in response to a directive to remove books that are not age-appropriate from library shelves. Smith highlighted graphic novels such as "Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe to illustrate the type of books she meant, but the board removed classics like Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." Smith said: "They have obviously put books on there that there was never any intention of having them target those books." Public School Board chair Julie Kusiek said that the list meets the criteria set out by the government and consequently that "several excellent books will be removed from our shelves this fall." Can you treat grief with a pill? Naltrexone, which is used to treat alcohol and opioid addictions, has been mooted as a way to help people with prolonged grief disorder (the premise being that they have become "addicted" to the person they lost). Ayesha Habib, whose father died when she was 21, writes for The Walrus about the many issues with this approach. "After my dad’s passing, my friends at the time grew awkward around me. They didn’t know how to speak to me, and some disappeared from my life entirely. Every person has a different way of understanding death and grief," she writes. “In a world where grief literacy is so low, I worry about our intolerance for being present with people in pain,” says Marney Thompson, the director of the bereavement services program at Victoria Hospice in British Columbia. “I think we’re so quick to jump to the solution, the fix, the ‘get over it’ that we just don’t allow space for real human emotion, which is sadness and sorrow and suffering.”

"Sideways" is one of those movies that has taken root in culture — eminently quotable, it boosted the wine industry in California almost as much as it did the careers of its stars and director, and did irreparable damage to the reputation of merlot. 20 years after its release, David Holmes went on a "Sideways" themed wine-tasting trip with Rex Pickett, the author whose novel was adapted into the screenplay, and wrote about it for Esquire.
“The owner of the Hitching Post restaurant got ahold of the whole script a couple weeks before we started,” Pickett told Holmes. “And he saw that it was R-rated and that the characters would be drinking, so he called an emergency session of the Santa Barbara Vintners’ Association and said ‘We have to shut this film down.’”

Learning tools included Duolingo, real-life classes at universities, immersion, movies, video games, Kocowa (a Korean movie streaming service), Kwiziq, and — our personal favorite — Metallica songs. Duolingo is trying to augment its French and Spanish services via video calls with "Lily," its Daria-like character. A product manager told writer Imogen West Knights that the choice of a grouchy conversation buddy was intentional, since native speakers are “kind of intimidating,” and talking to Lily, rather than someone nicer, is supposed to build “conversational resilience.” To that, we say, if we wanted to talk to a grumpy French lady, we would simply phone our mother-in-law. Fyre Festival II has a vague location and a specific date: A privately owned island off the coast of Mexico, April 25-28 2025. The first iteration of the festival in 2017 was an unmitigated disaster, with attendees paying thousands for no entertainment and cheese sandwiches, and founder Billy McFarland ending up in jail for wire fraud. McFarland told TODAY that he has learned his lesson, for example, by hiring a production company to handle logistics, but refused to confirm who they were, or the exact location of the island. Who will be performing? “We haven’t booked any talent for Fyre II,” he said. “It’s not going to be just music — for example, karate combat. Edo — the ancient Japanese city now known as Tokyo — may have been one of the world's first large-scale ecological civilizations. From 1603 to 1868, as a result of the government's policy of not trading with outside nations, there was a scarcity of cotton and timber, which meant that everything was reused, repaired, repurposed or recycled. Romance Writers of America (RWA) is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, in part because of years of controversy surrounding race and inclusion. The trade association was founded by a Black woman in 1980 but became progressively whiter and less supportive of Black writers, awarded controversial books and in 2005, polled members on if romance should be defined as between one man and one woman. Despite all this, romance itself is thriving — it's the highest-earning fiction genre and sales are climbing. NBC took a look at what went wrong at the RWA.
