There are other octane boosters, though. I don't know to what extent I believe this, but some claim a primary reason tetraethyl lead was selected was that it was patentable. Then inertia would continue its use long after the patent ran out.
I didn't find any cite-worthy sources in a quick search, so do with that what you will.

Proto industrialized people just did all kinds of crazy crap.
Did you know that when I was a child, they routinely added lead to gasoline? On purpose? And not just a wee dram, but EPA estimates 200,000 tons per year [1].

I’m sure field rescue is hard, and I’d be incompetent. Thinking & acting quickly under pressure is not my forte. Ruminating on a challenging problem that takes days of thought is more my thing.
That said one skill doing IT at very large company has taught me: you can’t do your own job if you are double-checking everyone else. Maybe a team lead, but in cases like this, it’s probably more down to picking the people who can be depended upon.

The article briefly mentions they built a field rig to lift/shift the boulder. As someone interested in engineering, I'd be curious. The photo suggests that maybe they wrapped it in a webbing, then pulled it off of him, perhaps with a winch.
That's the kind of object where if the other end of the winch is something like one of those fire trucks, you might drag the truck along the gravel more than move the boulder, even with the parking brake set on every wheel.

To state in a different way, one concern I'd have with Flock is the way it encroaches upon the 4th amendment to the extent it builds a database that can be mined to search for "criminal" activity. There's already precedent of geofencing used to arrest and charge person wrongfully accused.
Example, would Flock be used to justify a search of 10+ apartments in a bldg because a criminal was "recognized" walking in the front door.

My state isn’t quite as red as Wyoming, but I seriously considered registering Republican in 2024 long enough to try to vote for the least worst. In the end, I decided it was more to my advantage to select Dems in local gov races (county, city). But that’s the thing I’d encourage everyone to do… look at the ballot and be strategic and make a choice. Don’t be passive.

That's been set to "Do nothing" while plugged in. FWIW, the other choices (sleep, hibernate, shut down) would preclude me from using it at all with the lid closed.
This machine is thin and the main air vents are concealed in the hinge.

In the year 2025, business-class laptops need to be designed to run at full power with the lid closed. We've been using these things as mobile workstations for 15+ years, and "you need to run it with the lid open for proper air circulation" is NOT acceptable.

I get the point, but I would add that... It's one thing to engage China 1:1 in a trade dispute. It's another to take them on while you've already burned every other trade relationship, especially those with your most important traders, Mexico and Canada.
China and others can pivot to other nations to make up some of the shortfall. Where will the USA pivot to?

What does anyone think will be accomplished by this? It doesn't even state specific objectives. Changing what days things are purchased makes virtually no difference to the businesses. And I feel for anyone that doesn't show up for work March 15 and ends up fired over something that will have virtually no impact.

FYI, it looks like this stupid bill got exactly the attention it deserved:
"Introduced 07/31/2024
Latest Action: Senate - 07/31/2024 Read twice and referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs."
No co-sponsor, no action was taken aside from it being introduced in committee. It was dead on arrival. Hopefully that will be the last we hear of this bad idea.

On a hunch, I looked it up and found a sentence on Wikipedia that says Wodehouse started with his first novel being initially published serially in a magazine. I'm guessing the publication standards getting a story published a chapter at a time in a magazine were a lot lower than anyone would face trying to get their first novel published by a major publisher today.
