Healthcare in Taiwan is truly phenomenal. I pay US$30/month for National Health Insurance. I’ve never waited more than 10 min as a walk-in at this ENT clinic, which costs only US$8/visit, and I always leave with a clear diagnosis and treatment.
I’m from the US. This is not normal but should be.

These legal residents of the US have been targeted by the government. Some were abducted off the street by masked government thugs.
Badar Khan Suri, Rumeysa Ozturk, Yunseo Chung, Mohsen Madhawi. And many more.
Their offense was to criticize a foreign country for its mass slaughter of civilians—a slaughter accomplished with US taxpayer-funded weapons.
But legal residents are supposed to enjoy the same First Amendment rights as citizens: speech, assembly. If these rights can be violated for one, they can be violated for any.
Rosa Luxemburg put it well: “Freedom only for supporters of the government, only for the members of one party—however numerous they may be—is no freedom at all. Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently.”
Freedom means “freedom for the other fellow”.
I hope we can all take a strong stand for justice for “the other fellow,” for those with whom we disagree. That’s what has set America apart. That’s what has made it great.

I’d like to share one simple but important observation on tariffs: they have been removed for Chinese-manufactured electronics like smartphones, but they remain in place for their components.
Thus, the tariff policy as currently implemented actually discourages US manufacturing—the opposite of its stated goal—because it’s now cheaper to import the final product than its parts.
Paul Krugman puts it this way: “we’re now putting much higher tariffs on intermediate goods used in manufacturing than on final goods. This actually discourages manufacturing in the United States.”
Matt Stoller writes: “It’s hard to imagine a better strategy for moving more production offshore.”
Of course, policy could change again in mere hours. But this in itself is an enormous problem, as such policy uncertainty must be truly paralyzing for businesses who would like to make plans.

Much of the Signal discussion is overlooking a key point: an entire apartment building was leveled to kill one guy.
How many civilians died? Is this a war crime?

You can’t oppose money in politics only when it’s the other team. Citizens United, which lets corporations spend unlimited money in elections, must be overturned. The Democratic Party needs a radical overhaul to present a coherent and principled alternative to Trumpism. 4/4

I used to think it was the domain of leftists to hate our country.
Now it is the right who tell our federal workers—inspectors, researchers, rangers, regulators, aviators—that we’d be better off without their oversight and if we handed their jobs to corporations.
It’s hard to describe the demoralization and damage of this.

Finally, note that recent evidence suggests even one dose the HPV vaccine can provide good protection; two is better; three is like kryptonite. The WHO has updated its recommendations to 1-2 dose schedules depending on circumstances. Bottom line: even 1 dose is worth it! 6/6

3) HPV is a local infection ‘ingrained’ deep at a certain bodily site. But early in infection when virus is still being produced, we can ‘auto-inoculate’—infect ourselves with our own virus, but at a different spot. Vaccination will prevent these new infections too. 5/6

2) Natural immunity to HPV is poor because HPV is so immune evasive. Thus, even if you’ve been infected by a certain type like HPV16 (the ‘worst’ one), the vaccine will still greatly improve immunity against additional infections by that same type. 4/6

1) HPV is not one virus but hundreds, of which ~13 cause cancer. The vaccine prevents 9 of the most important ‘types’. So if you’ve been infected with HPV type 16, the vaccine will still protect you against the other eight, including HPV6 and 11 (genital warts) and HPV18. 3/6

Many believe the HPV vaccine won’t do you any good if you already have the virus. Not so.
