The Build Awesome Kickstarter is back up, already hit its goal in less than a day.
I backed it, because I do want to see Leatherman and OSS projects as a whole succeed monetarily and be sustainable. I hope there is an audience for Build Awesome Pro despite my doubts.
That said, seeing one of the main features of Build Awesome be that "Cursor can refactor it, Claude can rewrite it, and your own scripts can manipulate it (safely)." and that "Build Awesome was designed for a world where your agentic assistant is a full contributor" is certainly frustrating and disappointing.

@nprofile…atnr I'm going to be annoying and put in my 2 cents. I absolutely want people to create things that are unique and weird and personal. But you can do all that and be high-quality and work really hard at it.
genAI is predictable and formulaic, but I don't think that's synonymous with professionalism.
Don't get me wrong, I love when people make messy, ugly creations with low fidelity. My point is I don't want genAI to gentrify polish. Does that make sense? There are other signifiers of humanity than just our mistakes.
I say this as someone who makes typos on literally every blog post I make but also someone that spends hours on research and trying to make something polished.

Let me explain why I use it though, and why I don't think it's antithetical to the IndieWeb. As someone who's been on Medium for ten years, now.
First, Medium lets you export your posts and email list. (it does take a Python script to convert the posts into Markdown, I should probably make something accessible for that.) That plus its API already make it not a closed-off walled garden.
Really, I see it as a gateway for people towards the IndieWeb and as harm reduction. Once people have a collection of work and consistent routine of writing, I absolutely recommend that they migrate over to their own independent site.
Medium isn't owned by any large terrible company. There are no ads or user-tracking. It is still a social media platform where you're on rented land, but it is a social media platform that prioritizes longform, thoughtful writing which is never a bad thing.
The most popular longform writing social media platform alternative, Substack, has a culture problem I don't like (allowing nazis on their platform for wayyy too long).
As much as I love the IndieWeb, I don't think I'll ever be successful enough to make $900CAD/mth from people on it first-hand, and I *really* don't want to take people's money like that! They have so much better/important things to spend it on. Medium's membership is $5/mth and it supports me and *all* writers in their partner program.
Regarding design/UX I absolutely agree it is sterile and boring and they've sadly removed customization options over the years. But other pro-IndieWeb platforms like Mataroa also have zero design options.
There are MANY problems I have with Medium, of course, but I do think it is does a net positive for the Internet.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, I'm sure there are things I'm missing! I don't mean to be a sycophant for a social media platform but I do really think they have good intentions and have avoided enshittification that has ruined nearly everything else on the Internet.
