Aside from NVidia drivers (which are a bitch in any distro) I haven't had any problems. I usually update about once a week, but that's not necessary.
I use Debian on my server, multiple media centers (Mac Minis), and my laptop.
The only "gotcha" is that if you're relying on "cutting edge" type stuff, there might be some struggles with support because they will not add anything that's remotely unstable to their packages.
If you do really weird work you might need to verify, but honestly? Outside of NVidia I have not had any issues for actual years.
YMMV of course, but like I said, I haven't had a whiff of an issue.
Also, it requires a lot less RAM which, is probably important these days.
(one of my media centers has 2GB which...is painful. but 4GB and up, unless you're doing heavy lifting, seems to work just fine.)

Debian is (like Ubuntu) based on Debian and, despite some questionable decisions on some things, they've been pretty solidly opposed to adding AI stuff.
Also, they've said that they'll refuse to add the age-gating shit too.

After 80 years he's learned that ignorance IS an excuse. He 'leans in' because it works.
Whenever I hear him being 'dumb', what I hear is the teenager that got caught stealing or lying or cheating, who, when questioned, shrugs with a dismissive "I don't know."
The teenager knows, but does not care. That is what I hear.
The teenager isn't stupid, or ignorant. They know why they stole or lied or cheated, but they also know that admitting it will set an expectation, and if punishment is going to happen anyway, why bother?
I could be wrong. I wasn't a great parent. But I also wasn't a great teenager.

Still no sign of her. Any help from the #PDX area is very much welcome. I'm on the other side of the planet so literally this is the most that *I'm* able to do for another two weeks.
As of last night (yesterday in PDX time) my wife said nobody had heard from her or seen her. She is concerned that she may have been abducted, either by freaks or by the nazis, although it is very much likely that she's "just" run away.
My wife tried to trace her phone, but it leads to an apartment complex and she doesn't know which apartment the girl's phone may be in. The cops apparently did a knock around but nobody was answering the door. (no big surprise considering how Portlanders feel about cops, especially in our neighborhood).
Her school has been notified of what's going on, so if she shows up there people will reach out.
So yeah...any help people can give would be awesome.
The last time that she was seen was near Powell and 131st Ave; her phone pings to Division and 134th or so. To my knowledge she doesn't really have anywhere else to go. She has some family in Vancouver, but she has had virtually zero contact with any of them since her parents died, well over a year ago. I doubt she has the resources or inclination to seek them out (but I could be wrong).
I do not know what social media accounts she may have (and this is the only SM that I use, and I know she's not here), so not sure if she's been active on Insta or TikTok or anything like that.

Put your support into things that you *can*. Support politicians making the right decisions, decry those that don't.
When it's close to home, every war effort ends up having things that most people "can" help with.
Places that have standing armies have soldiers that are paid to do that shit...your contributions will likely have to be elsewhere, even if it's just the moral kind of support.

Thirty years ago I used both Windows and Linux regularly. I provided support to both, but was pretty sure that Linux was going to be the way to go.
Twenty-five years ago when everyone started adopting Windows I thought, "Yeah, but the costs will get out of hand. Companies are already complaining about having to introduce an entirely new department (IT) and the cost to keep it running. Surely the people supporting the tech will be pushing for Linux"
Twenty years ago I was mostly using Linux but I'd run Windows in a virtual machine to support it. I didn't like it, but figured that it was only a matter of time before the ever increasing costs and ever declining utility of it would finally drive Windows into a coffin.
Ten years ago when Microsoft tricked everyone into "upgrading" Windows 7 to Windows 10 (remember them changing the "X" in the corner to "install" instead of "cancel"?) I thought, "Man, these dirty tricks are going to cost them a lot of business. Surely any day now Windows will be a thing of the past. They're really abusing their privilege."
Since then they've gone from licensing software on a per computer basis to selling it per user, providing everything as a service that requires a network connection to function (whether it makes sense or not), monthly fees, added advertisements to every application, and added software that tracks people whether they want it to or not. Plus, AI, which nobody asked for but that everyone will pay for.
The moral of this story is that I have no idea how much fascism people will tolerate, but I'm betting it's a whole lot more than me.

In more personal news.
Heading back to the US in a few days. I'm not looking forward to it, I'm not happy about it, and there's not a goddamned thing I can do about it.
That aside, I was talking to one of the members of our group who is actually French. I can't remember what I said but she got a really surprised look on her face and said, "Your pronunciation is really good." I thanked her and she said, "no, like, really really good".
That was nice.
I took an inventory of food; aside from some condiments I should have *just* enough to get me out of here...I planned well, I guess (or just got lucky. Maybe a little of both).
Dinner in public went well enough. The group I went with is just part of the group, so no big surprises. The venue was very intimate, but the owner was British so language wasn't a problem at all. Had a brief conversation over a cigarette with an elderly French gentleman who, surprisingly, seemed to share my politics. That was also nice.
BUT, I've been on edge all day and just spent 10 minutes in chat agonizing over the question of "how has the weather been there?" before someone else answered (incorrectly, it would seem) and my brain started functioning again.
Might be in for a bad few days.

As a side note, something that I thought was very funny, when I learned to play pool I automatically favored left-handed playing, which my dad insisted couldn't be "correct" since I was RH in everything else.
To this day I confuse the shit out of people when I can shoot with both hands, but left-handed I'm still stronger. It's funny when they think they've snookered me until they realize that they needed to do that on the other side of the table (and then when they do that, they're pissed when they see me switch hands)

Only my own (and my families) experience. Plus a little bit that I've learned along the way.
My dad started off left handed. I do not know if he was on the spectrum, but I bet that he was. When he was five years old, his left hand was crushed.
He became right-handed.
When he was in his thirties, he got his right hand caught in a snowblower (the kind with metal blades). He moved back to his left hand while he recovered from that one.
So he was mostly ambidextrous.
I grew up using my right hand for most things. I've always shot pool left-handed, but not a lot else.
Then I watched Mythbusters "Throws like a girl" and I learned that what you feel comfortable doing largely depends on what you've practiced.
I have felt that this bears out in my own life. MOST of the things that I do are right handed, but other things...fully left. Depending on practice. Some things that I've practiced with my left hand I do rather well (say, minute adjustments for delicate work with tools, that sort of thing).
I do not consider myself ambidextrous, but with some things I can "trick" people into thinking that I am.
I don't think either myself or my father were particularly "strong" in either hand, we just chose one and went with it.
In college I had an instructor with a really weird (yet relevant) quirk.
Whether on a piece of paper or on a chalk/white board, he would write with his left hand until he was at the 50% point...then he'd switch hands. He couldn't seem to do it any other way. He said he'd always been that way.
His penmanship was almost identical from one hand to the other - unless he broke his own rule. If he crept past 50% it would look like it should be written in crayon. Same if he started at the left side of the page with his right hand.
