well damn, I'm seeing conflicting info about that model. Some sites say it's PCIe SSD, others say SATA SSD. Acer didn't publish a service manual as far as I can see.
Other things I'd try before giving up are turning on legacy/CSM in BIOS and booting Debian as legacy instead of EFI; and swapping the SSD with a spare if you have one and see if Debian sees that one.

I get it...we were hit with an unexpectedly high property tax bill on the house my girlfriend inherited when her mom passed last year. They weren't supposed to raise the taxes on it until after the probate process was complete, but they did anyway, and it was literally four times the billed amount as last year. I had been putting money aside for a new phone but had to use that to help her make the payment and avoid a lien.
If you can share the make and model of the laptop I don't mind doing some research on it for you.

Is it an eMMC or an NVMe/SATA SSD? I've seen weird things like this with eMMC storage before. You can try a tool like gparted live CD, and if it sees the drive you can do a blkdiscard command on it and that might put it in a state where any other OS can see it. That's worked for me in the past anyway.

And I just realized Jamie did this as some sort of campaign where he's obsessed with what he calls the "Mastodon HOA", i.e. people who ask for and depend on accessibility as a web standard. It's an extremely ableist position and I had no idea he was that aggressively against accessibility for Mastodon users.
There's a word for someone who joins a community with the full intent of pushing against the community's established way of doing things, then pretends to be butthurt when called out on it. Jamie has zero respect for the community and according to his other posts, he started this thread intentionally as a honeypot to find people to block. It's trollish behavior and absolutely not something I expected out of anyone, especially him.
HIs HOA analogy is completely flawed as well. I hate HOAs and I will never own a house or rent an apartment that has one. But a community is not an HOA; there's no board of directors here, nor a community leader; we're all a bunch of folks who have common interests and wish to have a nice place to talk about them. That community includes disabled folks, so we all work together to make it an easier place for those folks, just as we make it a welcoming place for minorities of all types, folks of all genders, and so on. When someone enters the community with the intent to troll it with honeypots like this, the community responds by banding together in support of one another. It makes it easier for him to block us, but then one wonders why even be on Mastodon at all if he hates us all so much.

Holy shit. This whole thread completely turned my respect for Jamie around. I've been a fan of his writing and projects since the early 2000s but this is such a fucking odd hill to die on. It's his hill though, so all I can do is speak out in support of your attempt to be helpful.
Jamie, I get that you despise anyone telling you how to do what you do (your fierce independence is something I admired about you), but in this case I don't feel that was what was going on. It was a suggestion, not a callout or a demand, and this is a public space that you chose to join, a space that is full of disabled folks who depend on alt-text to be able to even read a post.
Accessibility matters, you're old enough to know that, and now that I know your position on it (especially as someone who is legally blind without glasses and has a hard time reading tiny text even with them), and I have seen you punching down extremely hard and without compassion on fellow disabled folks, I don't think I can consider you someone to look up to anymore. If you've read this far, I know you will block me after if you haven't already, so I'll just say one more thing. How you choose to be known and remembered is exactly that: your choice.

Never, ever buy a new car. I know, you've heard that all your life and it's good financial sense. But these days it's not just about the money.
All new cars from the major brands come with an always-on connection back to the manufacturer. Even if you never connect your phone to the car's infotainment system, even if you decline to accept the terms on the car's screen, even if you never turn on the sound system, it is constantly sending data back to the mothership. Your identity is tied to the car's VIN (vehicle identification number) and everything you do with the car is recorded and transmitted, where it can then be analyzed, processed, and sold. It gets sold to insurance companies, the government, and data farmers who then sell it on to other entities like Google and Apple to improve their mapping services. You didn't agree to this? Too bad, it's not your choice.
This should be illegal, but it isn't. Why would the various governments want to outlaw a practice they benefit from?
The only way to avoid this data harvesting is to buy a used car. "But what about the extra maintenance?" Do your homework, have the car inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchase, and look for one-owner cars with low miles. Put the money you save on the monthly payment towards regular maintenance to keep it running well.
And yes, I know that the day will come when there are no more used cars without this built in tracking garbage. I absolutely love the *idea* of electric cars (except Tesla, fuck that shit) and I hope one day we reach the point where the majority of vehicles on the road are electric. Unfortunately, those are the most connected of all, basically a computer on wheels and the manufacturer has a vested interest in tracking and analyzing your data to improve next year's model.
However, if you buy a used gas/petrol car, even one with telemetry baked in, you can at least disable the antenna because you own the car. Look up your model and "disable 4G/5G antenna". There are methods for all of the major manufacturers. Unfortunately those manufacturers are pushing hard to stop you from doing so by doing things like tying the car's ignition system to that always-on connection or trying to get laws passed to prevent modification of that part of the vehicle for "safety reasons". They know a vehicle is a necessity for most folks and will try to use that position against you.
Fight back, keep control of your own property, and buy a used car if you have to have one.

In all seriousness, I am going to partition my main drive and install OpenBSD again, and "live in it" again for a while. It's been a while since I've ran it as my main desktop OS and I'm sure it's only improved since then.

Just the thought of "AI" being allowed to make pull requests and commits to the Linux kernel source, and have those changes accepted into the released kernel, makes me want to wipe my main workstation/gaming PC and install OpenBSD and be a digital zen monk for the rest of my days.
And given that half of my computers already run OpenBSD anyway, it wouldn't be all that much of a change. No more Steam gaming, so what? There are plenty of great games that run on OpenBSD, including The Dark Mod.

I can say with certainty that static website hosting with httpd, and syncthing, are a given as I've done both on OpenBSD without issues. I haven't used the other services so they are outside of my scope, but radicale and git are available in ports/packages so they should be straightforward.
As for running it all on bare metal as opposed to vmm instances for each, I feel that's a matter of preference. You might want to virtualize one or more of those services if you run into conflicts but I feel it's worth testing all of them bare metal if you have the time to dedicate to it.

So after a brief stint navigating the weird, wild world of Chromium based browsers, I'm back on Librewolf. None of those browsers come close to the privacy and security feature set of Librewolf, its breadth of platform support, not to mention support for uBlock Origin and other privacy-first extensions, and seamless, self-hosted bookmark and password syncing.
If I come across any sites in the future that don't work with Librewolf, and they are important enough to warrant it, I'll fire up Ungoogled-Chromium for that site only.

I think I'm going to start unplugging on the weekends. I am bombarded with notifications and support requests and phone calls and emails and texts and Mattermost chats and people popping into my office all day at work. That's expected stress, that's compensated stress, but it's still stressful.
I have a bad habit of being accessible and reachable on the evenings and weekends when I'm off work, and that's uncompensated, unwarranted, unnecessary stress that compounds my work stress. This weekend I plan to do the brakes on my car (I try to do all of my own mechanical work because I can, because I enjoy it, and because it saves money) and I am already dreading the constant stream of notifications and texts and calls that will make me put down my tools and clean my hands every five minutes to address. So I just...won't. The phone will stay in the house. The work apps will be turned off. After the car is done I will sit on the porch with an iced tea and watch the squirrels and birds cavorting in the yard. I might watch a TV show or movie later in the day with my SO. But my phone will be turned off.
I'm already looking forward to the weekend after this, where I plan to finally dig into my Commodore VIC-20 and figure out why it doesn't output video, and generally tinker around with things I enjoy. My phone will be turned off.
If this means I don't respond to anyone here over the weekend, I'm sorry, it's not you, it's me. I need to turn off. I'll see you again on Monday.

The president is planning to fly in a plane that is guaranteed to be full of espionage equipment, tracking equipment, and possibly navigation equipment capable of taking control of the aircraft, all completely controlled by the government of Qatar.

Pinta, a wonderful little image manipulation program that does most of what people use GIMP or Photoshop for in a much smaller and tidier package, has just released version 3.0. [0]
I've used Pinta almost since its inception; it was born out of a post on #OSNews [1] and worked perfectly as a truly FOSS alternative to Paint.NET, which was my goto editor on Windows at the time.
Since then I've enjoyed using it on every OS I run apart from Haiku (which has its own great alternatives).

Currently building #LibreWolf on #Void #Linux, not only because I can, but because I don't care for Flatpak or AppImage and the only alternative for Void is to build it from source.
As of this screenshot I'm about nine minutes into what will probably be a 15-20 minute build on my Geekom A7. This is the hardest I've pushed this tiny workstation so far, averaging 13GB in use and all eight cores (16 threads) pegged to 100%.

I need to find a hard fork of #Firefox (not a soft fork like LibreWolf or Floorp, as awesome as those projects are), or I need to find a non-Firefox, non-Chromium cross platform browser that supports bookmark/password/settings sync and force myself to learn to use it. Because of both my day job and side gigs, I need it to be Windows/Linux/BSD/Android compatible.
I feel like I'm asking for the impossible here.
Oh and on top of that, now that Mozilla has rescinded its promise to not sell your data, I also need to find an alternative to #Thunderbird.
Why can't we have nice things?

thanks, I wasn't aware of the harassment. That's just so wrong!
Edit: looking into this a little shows that GrapheneOS devs banned CalyxOS from using their code because it wasn't open source? So does that mean GrapheneOS isn't fully open source? That's disturbing if it's the case still today. I'm going to keep looking into both OSes before I commit to either.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, it has all been extremely helpful! Please feel free to share your experiences further.
I've decided I want to try GrapheneOS first, and if everything I need works I'll probably stick with it. If I have issues with it I'm going to switch to CalyxOS and try it for a while. If neither of them work out I'll probably fall back to LineageOS. I know for a fact I don't want the default Pixel ROM, been there done that and it felt like Google was slurping up every single thing I did with the phone and using it to bombard me with ads and targeted content.

In slightly more positive (or at least proactive) news, can anyone relay their experiences with either #GrapheneOS or #CalyxOS? I have decided (mostly but not completely unrelated to yesterday's results) to move away from all things #Apple for good. That means I'm getting rid of my iPhone and Macbook. I want to move to an Android phone that is completely de-Googled.
I'm going back to the #Pixel 8 Pro, if that makes a difference. Once I've got my carrier set up on the eSIM I will wipe it and install one of the two ROMs listed above. Any help in this area is greatly appreciated, as are boosts!
