Fiona noticed a recent hole in the fence had gotten much bigger with a path being worn, so we stuck the camera pointing at it and got some nice shots of hogs squeezing through. (6:52 and 9:09)

Drama! During the day we found a baby hedgehog that might have been in distress? Maybe? Hard to tell! We called an expert friend for advice and during that call it waddled off home. Commerical algorithms suck, but messages appearing in a dizzying range of contexts at random is worse. The cognitive load needed to parse a stream is intense and it’s no wonder people fuck up. I don’t believe anyone sets out to be an obnoxioius reply-guy - the medium is the cause through catastrophic context collapse. We have no idea why someone posted what they did or to what end, so we project the only thing we’re sure of - ourselves. (2/7)

The broader fediverse concept is not necessarily flawed and I am certain it should not be conflated with Mastodon. Indeed, bits of Mastodon are fine. I like the hashtag following, and if I do return it’ll probably be in a read-only hashtag following mode. What I’ve heard of BlueSky’s Feeds sounds positive. I think my Mastodon experiment is over. After realising I wasn’t enjoying my time here I took a fortnight off and haven’t missed it at all. If anything my mental health has improved. I’ll keep the account and post links to whatever I publish elsehwere, but I won’t be reading the stream. I genuinely don’t think social media can work, even if it’s non-commerical and open source. There’s something very interesting about the memberships of the Labour and Tory parties being at best irrelevant and at worst an impediment to electability. In order to govern you need to have mass appeal and nothing of any substance has mass appeal these days. You might call it a blandocracy if you were in to neologisms. Be too relevant to people’s actual wants and needs and you’re shutting yourself off from the majority that you need. (2/5)

It’s interesting that Corbyn grew the Labour membership (self included - it was a heady time) to nearly that of the 70s, and in doing so made the party (arguably) unelectable. Meanwhile the Tory faithful put Truss in charge, damning them to the wilderness. The membership are, by definition, not normal people, because normal people don’t care in a political party way about the world. (They do care, though. Never think otherwise.) (3/5)

I quite like the idea of compromise at the high level of government. I don’t think it’s the right place for dogmatic certainty. But I don’t think the two-party system is able to do compromise.
The Con/Lib coalition was a joke, and Labour seem incapable of being the broad progressive church they blatantly are. Some of the continental systems seem to achieve it, but how we evolve to that, I have no idea.

@npub1se6…cmph My theory (and I have no evidence) is a lot of early Mastodon adopters are from groups that have struggled to fit into mainstream spaces, and this space worked for them in a very empowering way, so they’re extra protective of it now we’re all piling in. That doesn’t stop them being awful bores, but I’m happy to be empathetic to their needs (while I ignore them).

@npub1se6…cmph Totally. One of my autistic traits is I find how humans figure out and navigate context-bare zones like this to be really fascinating. No-one is ever wrong. :)
