@nprofile…0rg3 pps. I looked further: the only other time in NHL history (besides Tim Thomas, Bruins, 2011) a goalie won a Vézina and a Cup in the same year was Billy Smith, Islanders, 1982. (Prior to that Vezina awarded to team of goalies w lowest GAA).

@nprofile…0rg3 Ps. In the NHL there are no “crappy” goaltenders. There, however, seasons and parts of seasons where even the elite goalies struggle. And seasons and parts of seasons where “average” goalies seem to become elite.
Blaming the goalie for a team’s success or failure is easy for fans; it’s not a viable strategy for a GM. Why? Because the goalie is only one position. An important position, no doubt. But as the record suggests, putting a lot of $M into that position leaves other areas weak.

Just as it is not the issue in Vancouver: you can have an undeniably great goalie, and still not get deep into a Cup run. You build a team. And you only have $xxM to work with. Oilers have done well these past three seasons, w a Calder-nominated goalie who costs less than $3M and a backup, both of whom have great winning percentage numbers in regular and playoff seasons.
My “other team” is Montreal. Their talent is signing for less (Hutson just gave them a discount), & their goalies are inexpensive.
Meanwhile, Bruins, Rangers, Predators (and Canucks) are putting significant $Ms into goalies. I see no evidence of this investment resulting in deep Cup runs. That’s the *only* ROI a club should be considering.
By that measure, Oilers are doing very well.
As I said earlier, fans love to make a fetish of goaltending. But a Vezina winning goalie hasn’t won the Cup since 2011. It’s a team sport. Goalies are only 1 position. Oilers are good.

As someone who tried to be a Canucks fan when they first came into the league, I stopped worrying about them decades ago. I tried caring again a couple of years ago… but 🤷‍♂️
That said, I have enjoyed watching Q.Hughes and Demko.

People have criticized men’s (& boys) sports as fostering, or at least contributing to, a culture where “we don’t talk about.” That’s rape culture we’re talking about. When the Las Vegas Golden Knights professional hockey club bars a reporter from talking to a player charged (& acquitted) for sexual assault about that incident, that’s contributing to rape culture.
Men’s (& boys’) sports clubs have a lot to answer for viz safety and respect of wome. These men (& boys) & their clubs don’t need protection. They need to start taking responsibility for the things they say, post, do that hurt women, and other men (& boys).
They need to take responsibility for the things they don’t do. Like talking to team mates about how rape is not something honourable men are part of. A team of 18 was invited to a “3-way.” 5 participated. None of the other 13 took leadership to steer their mates away from a bad situation.
There’s lots to talk about.

It’s not about size. It’s about service. And how we, as those w dicks, understand ourselves, and where and how we apply our energies.
I encourage you to read the article/listen to the interview.
We’re faced with a growing problem: young (and older) men who feel like they “don’t fit.” It’s one of the causes of the current (and historical) fascism.
The guy being interviewed has a good handle on why in the US (and in Canada, and elsewhere in the western, liberal capitalist societies) our democratic and other institutions are in danger. He’s also got some useful things to say about how masculine energy can be part of the solution, rather than the problem.
In the absence of masculinity (“big dick energy”) in service to society, we’re left with boys & men tearing it down.

Until we, as men, step into integrity on a consistent basis in these kinds of situations, it’s small wonder many women don’t trust us.
This hockey trial story is focused on young men who played hockey. But really it’s an indictment of a culture that teaches us men we can be unreliable, hurtful, malignant actors without legal consequences.

I like what I’m seeing from so many world leaders, including 🇨🇦PM Carney: let Trump rage; quietly go about the business of being adults in the room, attending to national (Brazil) & international (Gaza, Israel, Palestine) issues w a rules-based rather than bully-based approach.
This too shall pass. In the meantime, focus on what’s real, & ignore what’s not real (ie. “TACO”).

Grief, among other things.
Why my 2-3 chapters/week writing flow has pretty much dried up.
I’m not lamenting, just noticing.
Being productive, efficient, effective—this used to matter to. Too much.
Getting slow. Not just to smell the roses, but to feel the love that tastes like absence and an exploding heart in slow motion. This is good.
Last spring we were still doing our weekly chore days, in our respective gardens. A great friend. I’m missing him. Almost a year now.
