I couldn't agree more. "Crap in, crap out" comes to mind. #GenAI is good at repeating the patterns it has been trained on, but it has no idea whether a pattern is good enough, let alone how to generate a creative and useful one.

What a wonderful documentary - it captures my own personal view of Ultras so perfectly. Heroes aren't just those who succeed (perhaps even fast), but also all those who give it their all, even if they end up failing. But either way, they definitely learn a great deal about themselves. Humility.

I think we've been using a local GitLab CE instance for over a decade now and have only recently added a Forgejo deployment for some projects
Apart from the fact that Forgejo is simply brilliant - it is - migrating these projects from GitLab to Forgejo wasn't too difficult. The key is to script the entire migration and use the REST endpoints
Pipelines are a different story, but as Forgejo's actions are GitHub compatible, it's not too hard to find plenty of documentation on how to do it.

IDK ... commercial VPNs are big in marketing "privacy" when indeed they often do quite the opposite. Many if not most of those VPNs are operated by quite shady (and state affiliated) businesses, and trusting them with anything "private" seems to be quite strange.

Treat it as a tool, as a technology, but by no means as a solution to our global problems.
The technology is incredibly useful when used correctly and responsibly. Hosting a decent LLM at home is trivial these days. The problem IMHO is that many people confuse technology with the "tech bros" who, with billions at their disposal, want to force it on us without any regard for the environment or our societies
I don't even remotely see the end of human design, art or coding, on the contrary

I’ve been using #Forgejo as a #Git repo server for a few days now for some of my personal & PhD projects and experiments.
And what can I say: I’m thrilled! I’m very familiar with #gitlab, but Forgejo has nothing to fear from the comparison! Of course, there's no feature parity, but it seems Forgejo/Gitea have simply focused on the essential aspects, and that works perfectly. Excellent performance, low resource footage, good CI/CD. On top of that, it’s fully FOSS, no ifs or buts!

There’s been an incredible amount of fresh snow over the last few days, so yesterday I just couldn't resist going on a short ski tour and taking three peaks in one go. 1300m elevation gain, fantastic slopes covered in fresh snow - and about four hours later, I was pretty exhausted but also very happy 😁

I share your concern, but let me introduce this nice little EU directive:
"Software Directive (2009/24/EC)" [1]
Article 6 odifies the original 1991 directive - explicitly grants the right to reverse engineer software for the purpose of achieving interoperability,
And we also have the Data Act from 2025, which is explicitly for IoT devices.
All in all this would be a nice little project, maybe ... 😃

I can totally relate to that!! Especially with new shoes, I'm always worried about how they'll feel on asphalt. Even though I try to avoid asphalt as much as possible, unfortunately you often can't quite avoid running at least a few kms on it in the end.

#Sonatype is at it again: after rendering their supposedly "OSS" Nexus repository server useless for anything but tiny installations, they now want to put the "OSS Index" behind a paywall.
If you run any kind of sensible CI/CD, you've probably come across this index before, as it helps you identify vulnerable software artifacts that are part of your #SDLC.

Today, my wife and I went on a short ski tour to the summit of Glungezer at around 2,700m and to nearby Sonnspitz at around 2,600m
The weather was absolutely perfect, with hardly any wind (which is rare for these peaks), and the snow was perfect too.
Let's just say: I'm not ready for spring yet ... and it just can't always be #trailrunning 😁

First, please don't get me wrong: Like anyone else, I don't want my data to be sold, and at the very last by the browser I've been using as my daily driver for anything internet for years.
But the question I can't find a viable answer for is: How can Firefox become a sustainable organization?
Selling our data is a no-go, that's for sure. But how do they make the money required to not only maintain but also invest in Firefox?

take the cheapest Claude Max subscription for 100 per month, this sums up to 24k per year for 20 devs. And if you just take the ordinary team subscription, it's more than 7k per year. So the economical sense is there, plus not having to worry about what happens to your data.
And in a corporate environment, replacing hardware every 5 years is not unusual, if not the norm.

the main question is: what is good enough for a given task? As we know since GPT 4.5, pure parameter count isn't the main enabler for "better" LLM results. And then we have Unsloth's Dynamic 2.0 quantization, which is extremely helpful to bring down the VRAM requirements while still keeping the accuracy at a very high level. So yes, pack two or three RTX 6000 Blackwell GPUs into a decent server, and you're good to go at a decent price.

Yes, using our existing DC infrastructure may not be as efficient as once again surrendering our sovereignty to the same tech bros we regularly complain about. And I would argue that more than 90% of today's typical workload is inference rather than training.
And to your last point: give any two software devs the same task and you'll get two different results. Have them do it again and you'll get another set of different solutions. Absolutely non-deterministic. No different with LLMs.

I have to disagree on one point: it takes surprisingly little hardware resources to run #GenAI efficiently for say 20 ppl. The hardware required for this is now quite affordable for a reasonably sized company as well as for enthusiasts (excluding the current crazy RAM prices). And decentralised operation neither requires a nuclear power plant nor an ocean for cooling, it works perfectly well with renewable energy.
Decentralisation is the key, one could perhaps even call it democratisation.

thanks to everyone who contributed ideas. I tried warming up my arm before #running, cleaning the sensor, made sure the watch had a good GPS signal, and then, after my heart rate had risen again, I put it on my other arm and my upper arm, but all to no avail.
Well, since I've been toying with the idea of getting a chest strap for some time, I treated myself to a new Garmin HRM 600 (a special offer for under €100 😁), and the difference is mind blowing, see below

It (also) works with your phone only, and it depends on #OpenStreetMap for GPS tracking.
You can use it for more or less any kind of outdoors activity, and depending on the activity, it also gives you some metrics, like pace, elevation gain etc.

after a recent firmware update, my #Garmin Forerunner 955 has gone nuts. At 53, a heart rate of 190bpm is of course possible, but not on my daily route.
And a completely reversed performance condition is also something special.

For example, two days ago at the traditional New Year's reception for diplomats, the Austrian President described the US as a "former friend" who is openly attempting to take over a part of Denmark.

The least you have to pay to get back basic proxy functionality is 10K per year. And so we decided to rather have one time migration costs and thus migrated to reposilite for maven and verdaccio for npm.
Reposilite is a bit strange, but it does its job and can be easily tamed using ansible.
The migration is still quite fresh, but so far things are running smoothly, so I can recommend both tools.

I have been using #immich for several years now for my family and friends, and it is a great piece of OSS that I am also very happy to support financially.

"This is an X11ism, originally an xsetting 1 which frequently results is in unexpected behavior when people pressing the middle mouse button."

My last run in 2025 took me to #Marseille, where I will be spending New Year's Eve with my family.
Contrary to what we expected, it is a surprisingly quiet city. Compared to other European cities, it seems quite relaxed, at least in the city center.

My short 11 km Xmas run took me to winter wonderland, so technically I can call it white Xmas. What you can't see in this pic, however, is that there is only about 1 cm of snow, but that's enough to create this magical view 😁

what's wrong with the HR? I've been having an annual sports medical checkup for a few years now, and of all the values, I found the HR to actually be the most accurate compared to the medical readouts.

That's what I call getting to the bottom of things! I know that Garmin isn't always accurate when it comes to measurements, but the way you're doing it here, with a live analysis on the treadmill, is absolutely spectacular! And it's good (and doesn't cease to amaze me) to see that Garmin manages to do the same quite well without any image analysis.

AI is controversial at many levels, but regardless of whether you like it, hate it, fight it, welcome it or whatever... it is definitely here to stay.
I obviously have a personal interest in #AI, but a few insights into its development to date may also be helpful for others in order to have a good discussion.

I am currently in the process of #bootstrapping a very complex Tier-0 infrastructure, and I am extremely surprised (or rather pleased) at how useful #Podman (and Quadlets) have become for such scenarios. A huge improvement from both a security and operational POV!
Tier-0 bootstrapping = neither #Ansible nor #OpenTofu available yet ... a real PITA ...

An brief 11 km fun run late this afternoon. The snow that was forecast actually arrived, so we now have a really beautiful winter wonderland. #Running in the snow becomes more difficult the deeper it is, but it's also much more fun 😃
And after a run like this, you definitely know why good winter gear makes sense.
Unfortunately, that much snow in November often translates to no snow during Xmas, but I hope for the best ☃️

I couldn't agree more! Maybe you're aware of this, but this has been researched more than once (I remember an old study by Intel from around 10 years ago), and the results haven't changed much.
The latest study I know is this one from 2021.
Spoiler: nothing can beat C/C++, JiT based languages are somewhere in the middle, but the middle is often like 100 times worse than the top languages.

Wenn man allerdings den Text drunter liest, dass die Aktie um ca 4% "abgestürzt" und nun angeblich Panik ausgebrochen sei, dann ist das vielleicht doch etwas dezent übertrieben ... das klingt eher nach clickbait als nach fundierter Information.

It's quite cold at 1000 metres, around -10C, and we've now had our first snow. Very little so far, but a little more is said to come in the next few days.
I love #running in these conditions and can finally get my old running shoes out again, which I pimped up with spikes last year 😎
Unfortunately, the run was a bit shorter than usual, but at the moment it's not that easy to run because the sun rises so late and sets very early ...

Yesterday, I went to see #TheRockyHorrorShow with my family at the #TirolerLandestheater. The region where I live isn't exactly known for progressive ideas, but the people here have long understood that love is universal and has nothing to do with gender.
This year, The Rocky Horror Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the performance was completely sold out, like all the other dates.
If the show was new, it would probably be a prime target for hatred and fanaticism from MAGA & Co...

Since version 3.77, #Sonatype has enforced hard limits for the community edition of #NexusRepository. If these limits are exceeded, certain functions are disabled and you have to purchase a commercial license.
We are currently in this situation, which is why we have created a small script that analyses and displays the request.log of a Nexus Repository server.

Have you always wanted a route planner like Google Maps for the good old Roman era around 2000ys ago?
Then take a look at this amazing research project by a team from several universities led by Tom Brughmans from Aarhus University. Part of the project was the development of such a route planner.
Now you can easily find out for example how long it took to travel the fastest way (🏇) from historic Verona to Lutetia (now Paris): only 172 hours 😁

I've been using Anthropic's Claude for some time, and recently it has been asking me questions that refer to other, earlier chats, such as "You know a lot about this, so you should be able to do it yourself"
I then asked it how much it knew about me, and it gave me a fairly comprehensive overview of what it had learned, where I live, that I'm currently building an AI workstation, ... All in all a pretty comprehensive profile, quite spooky. Good to soon have a local alternative!

The difference between a good and a bad spot for mobile internet around my house is dramatic, to say the least...
I'm stuck with #MobileInternet in my neighbourhood, but at least we have some #5G coverage. However, my kids often complain about how slow the internet was, and I'm not exactly happy about it either. On average, I only get about 100 Mbit DL for my "up to 500 Mbit" plan.
So I decided to find out how big the difference was between various spots in my house. And I was really amazed...

I'm trying to step up my #running after several days of illness, and it's literally an uphill battle
But it's almost fun because I know I can run my usual ~12km trail, as I've done countless times, so I just run. Interestingly, it's not my legs but my heart rate that shows me I'm still struggling. #Garmin tells me to rest for whopping 90h instead of the "normal" 15h. Really fascinating because I don't actually find it that strenuous.
Apart from that, I love #TrailRunning in Autumn!

After some waiting, I have finally received two nice little devices that I will have a lot of fun with in the future, both for my PhD studies and professionally.
2x96GB GDDR7 and over 2x24K CUDA cores finally make local experiments much more feasible and easier to plan 🤩
And I am also curious to see how these two beauties will perform when playing games occasionally, I have heard that the GPUs perform extremely well.

My 5c: Instead of buying a new TV, get a simple and cheap network switch (cheap as in 10 to 15 EUR), connect your existing network cable into the switch and use another short network cable to make a connection between the switch and the TV. Maybe you even have an old WLAN router that can also be used as a switch? Might be worth a try ...

Instead of running every day, this was my first run in more than two and a half weeks, as I had been ill with the flu/COVID/...
It is both fascinating and frustrating to observe how the body reacts to an abrupt reduction in physical activity and how much fitness I have lost in just a few days.
Well, and so I did my first run today during a short holiday in Leutasch, where I am spending the weekend with my wife. Mostly flat, but much more strenuous than usual.

For over a week, I've somehow been grounded, because I've caught a cold, the flu, ...
Apart from a headache, sore throat and slight fever, I have other, unrelated symptoms: My lower leg muscles ache as if I had muscle soreness, and the soles of my feet feel very hot at night. That's probably because I haven't been #running at all for over a week instead of every day...
It's really strange how the body somehow seems to develop withdrawal symptoms from not getting enough exercise...

We are currently #hiring for a software developer position, and I have to read a lot of CVs and GitHub/GitLab/... profiles.
It's strange what people are using LLMs for these days. Not only are many CVs obviously generated by an LLM, but so are their entire profiles...
Let me tell you one thing: if you can't even create a decent CV or profile yourself, describing yourself a little, then you lack the critical originality and creativity required for software development.
