Question is also whether any relevant players are actually aware and involved in these processes? Is Mastodon (@npub10gc…0m2k), is [@swf](https://socialwebfoundation.org ), is Bluesky? The only reason there is a messaging interop requirement (however flawed and gamed) is because Matrix was in the room when these things were discussed, notably the XMPP Standards Foundation was not.
DMA is reviewed every few years and while this review was a missed opportunity, a new review will happen in the near future.

Crypto currency scammers are targeting ships stuck in the Persian Gulf by pretending to be the IRGC and offering safe passage in exchange for crypto payment.
"On April 18, when Iran ‌briefly opened ⁠the strait subject to checks, ships tried to pass but at least two of them, including a tanker, reported that Iranian boats had fired shots at them, forcing the vessels to turn around.

I really wonder what kind of implications this will have for the collective safety model in this space. Things like DMs, follower-only, blocks, federated deletes etc are dependent on correct implementation of those things.
These are things that depend not only on the local software working well, but also the remote one.
Seems like fully vibecoded instance software could lead to a massive federated whoopsie.

National governments do not enforce European rules and corporations interpret such rules to their own benefit leaving researchers without data on energy use.

The idea of starter packs and introductions are nice and all, but then this happens:
"omg someone who self labels as a zionist put me on an antisemite list on bluesky" (real case, anonymized)
People added to such (publicly shareable) lists and starter packs (two different things) do not get notified at all! Furthermore, they cannot remove themselves from such packs. Yes, you can report, but that might be too late.
Where is the informed consent? Why is it not a requirement to give consent before one shows up on lists. Why can consent to inclusion not be withdrawn? I mean, this stuff is trivial to do in a centralized app developed by a company with a lot of staff and millions in funding. Yet, it doesn't happen.
Move fast and break someone's life.

Together with @npub1amy…qnrw and Benjamin Royer, I wrote a detailed research note on the topologies of digital identity systems (siloed, centralised, federated and user-centric) and how thinking derived from topological determinism, common in technical communities, obscures how digital identity systems operate in practice.
To understand the threats of digital identity, we must shift from rigid models and describe the topologies of digital representations as they truly are, rather than as they are purported to be.
Expect surprising twists and turns: DIY identity portability techniques turn siloed identities into centralised ones which allow attackers cascading access; platformisation turns federated identities into centralised ones and de-facto user-centric identities might be more likely to emerge from siloed models rather than user-centric ones. It's a mess. But one we have to reckon with.

An artist and designer with an interest in computer networks, materiality of the internet, digital community infrastructure, DIY/DIWO approaches, FOSS culture.

Currently pursuing a #PhD in Interaction and Participatory #Design at Malmö University. As part of that research I work together with actors in the cultural sector to co-design alternative social media infrastructures with/for them. These are mostly based on fediverse applications, so I am also interested in aspects of #federation #governance #contentmoderation and more generally how to transition to and improve alternatives together etc. This space is far from perfect and in some cases insufficient but we need to start somewhere??
