Yes, I really liked that technique. I think I read The Dead Zone first, which also used it, but not quite as much. I skimmed a lot of it the first time but in later reads I was really impressed. Sue Snell's book was very self-serving, the testimonies were often confrontational, the newspaper clips seemed a little inaccurate. Missing detail, or influenced by who they talked to. It was interesting.

In addition, the book was the story of cruelty in a high school and a home, but it constantly hints at a much bigger world. The story is told through Senate testimonies and a variety of books and then, at the end, a letter from a poorly educated woman about her niece and their granny. The series doesn't seem to use the same narrative trick - its titles seem written like a day at high school - but it seems to have its own way to build up a bigger world.

Carrie the movie just turned Carrie the story into horror and Carrie the person into a scary villain. Maybe a relatable one, but still the stuff of nightmares. She wasn't. The world was the nightmare she was merely reacting to it. That seemed lost in the film. It was a good horror, it was not a good Carrie.
Carrie the series seems to address that if the last few minutes are anything to go by.

OK, I took a peek at the end of Carrie before watching. I know, bad Kevin.
I like Stephen King because in his best stories the ending is ambiguous and have hints at a wider, larger world. The Breathing Method, The Stand, etc. Carrie the book had a bit of that, but not with the main characters. And while in general I liked Carrie's arc through the book, I just felt King didn't quite stick the landing.

But they're not virtual machines of any sort. They're just a way to restrict the views of processes. You could call them virtual userlands.

Yes. It would be hard. But he wants to be the Prime Minister. Is running away and lying about why in the face of a hard situation really a positive quality in a leader?

So Farage couldn't go to the count because of security - but the poll workers and other candidates went. And the police said they hadn't warned any candidate away.
Just a reminder that people who can't laugh at themselves make terrible, terrible leaders.

Here's the deal - I regularly get into arguments with family and friends on these things. I'm not popular at parties. I don't honestly like going out because arguments like these are exhausting so I don't go out as much.
If you're white and you don't have these sorts of discussions where you call out racist, sexist xenophobic crap, you're just not doing the work.
And yes. It sucks. It sucks to be That Guy. But other things suck worse.

Hey #Ireland, might not be a bad time to write your TDs and tell them we need to do something soon to reduce the impact of energy and food costs. And removing fuel taxes isn't it. Increasing grants for solar PV installs - and more battery storage, encouraging people to move to EVs, insulation grants. Anything to reduce energy usage and to help make existing wind power useful will help. And honestly, doing something to get as much wind power online as quickly as possible.

That's a fantastic story. The end is hilarious.
"""As I go to pack the car, I realize that Lori has bought some things on the trip, and fitting them into our Jeep Cherokee is getting tricky. Then I look over at Lori, and it all makes sense. "From now on," I tell the new master of fitting shapes into tight spaces, "you pack the car.""""

Venezuela nationalised their oil industry in 1976. That meant a bunch of US corporations lost their property.
Trump is replaying all the reactionary Boomer grievances from the 1980s. That's all he does.

London, UK has a murder rate of 1.2 per 100,000.
West Palm Beach, Florida, USA has a murder rate of 8 per 100,000.
Seems to me the mayor of London is doing a better job running his city than the mayor running the city closest to Mar a Lago. Mayby instead of talking ignorant shit about London's mayor, Trump should call him up to learn how to run a city.

The US has a long history of putting roadblocks for minorities to keep them from accessing government services. I think it's wild folks think minorities get loads of welfare in the US.

Both github and gitlab expose your ssh public keys on ...url.../USER.keys. It's a really handy way to share ssh keys.

It's fantastic! I found out about @npub12lk…m57q from @npub1dml…x796 and I've been using it for the past four months. I'm getting close to retirement and I have a bunch of open source projects I want to work on. VimWiki is my goto tool for organising all that. It's been amazing.
If Veronica or the VimWiki devs aver find themselves in Ireland with a fierce thirst on themselves, the pints are on me!

How to use #signal groups for activism. Technology only goes so far. People have to use it correctly. This is a good article explaining how to use signal groups.
The article also explains why people might choose signal.

Years ago I had a chat with an Orangeman (no, not that one) in Northern Ireland and it was... fascinating. Be interesting to trace where these beliefs come from.

Russia is moving its bombers away from Ukraine to within 500km of the US.
Just in case European leaders have any questions about who the Russians do and don't fear. Might want to ponder that when considering what the NATO membership list should look like.
And I get it, paperwork sucks, but you only have to replace an S with an A, it's easy.

Working from home is a massive climate benefit and a massive benefit for cities with poor public transit systems. It takes loads of cars off the road which reduces emissions and traffic. It blows my mind that we want to throw that away.

Fun science fact I learned this morning. Every frog species can be traced back to a common ancestor i what is now Poland. Isn't that amazing? It means every frog is a tad Pole.
