Those are serious rockets! My daughter (who has traveled a lot) said she had some of the best sushi she’s ever had in Mexico City. No oceans nearby. She was down there to kayak.

I think a lot about what we get out of 3 lbs of meat and a few watts of energy vs. the gigawatts and big iron the LLMs require.
The effort to fact check them all the time is a problem.
Biggest problem though is that they are machines for billionaires to steal IP.

In the 1960s CEOs made 20x the wages of the average worker. Now, because of tax and corp governance changes, they make 400x. Also, changes in corp governance laws in late 70s/80s force CEOs and BoD to focus solely on shareholder value. Before that they could consider all the stake holders (share holders, employees, customers, community).
The only way to unroll all this is to get $s out of politics, which means, at minimum, undo Citizens United and change tax law (as you say).

Boomers, born 1946 - 1964, were a little young to be working, but they would remember 50s and 60s.
Trump, et al, really seem to consider the Robber Baron days (1890s) to be their ideal. That’s where his fixation on tariffs comes from. Most of the tax law, corp governance laws, and social contract put in place in the 1930s in reaction to the Robber Baron days gave us the golden 50s and 60s. That’s also what has been slowly undone, starting in late 70s, giving us today.

We went through there last summer on the way to Wall Drug (and points East (Sioux Falls) for RASDAK http://rasdak.com) Highly recommend RASDAK if you like to bike. They sample different parts of S. Dakota each year. Last summer was the glacial lake country north of Sioux Falls. Other years have been the Black Hills.

when I was a freshman(1972), full tuition at Washington State University was $282/semester ($2100 in 2024). I could earn tuition over the summer. California residents got free tuition to Univ. California system at that time. All the boomers in congress got more or less the same deal.

It’s a very good movie. Takes place mostly in North Idaho. Parts are hard to watch. Reservation life is pretty accurately reflected (according to my friends who lived on the rez, I’ve never spent significant time there). Overall positive message. A poem plays a central role in the film

It’s been traumatic to watch. There’s a pirate class of people who’ve taken over SV and destroyed it in the past 20 years, though really the financialization of the economy started in the late 70s and accelerated through the Reagan years. Kessler Effect will make life much worse for everyone. There’s a ton of useful things that we get from space that we’d lose access to, e.g., weather satellites, climate and polution monitoring, astronomy, etc. etc. Space should be regulated, not a playground for billionaires. They just want to use it to aggregate power.

The quest for knowledge, which requires sending a few robots and telescopes into space, is not incompatible with fair and sustainable use of space and the atmosphere.
Where it gets crazy is when Billionaires are putting 10’s of thousands of satellites in orbit to compete with existing terestrial infrastructure, specifically the terrestrial internet and cell systems. It’s all about control and $s.

One time on that trek Mr. Rogers offered me a ride! Occasionally I could pass the time talking with my Squirrel Hill neighbor, Herb Simon. It's an amazing place.
I used to run around Frick Park/Fern Hollow under the bridge! I bet that messed up Forbes for a while when the bridge fell.

Yes, those walls would have made me a bit nervous 😱 Another thing I liked about that scene was the cognitive disonance of a non-Japanese person speaking fluent Japanese.
I have a friend who is white who spent years in Japan and was very fluent. We'd go to Japan Town in San Francisco with his wife, who is Japanese but from Detroit and didn't speak a word of Japanese. I remember one conversation where my friend was speaking Japanese to an older Japanese woman 1/2
