What's interesting about Dorsey's legislation is that even though YIMBYs say they hate it — see the above-linked Mission Local article quoting YIMBY Action's California director — it's being sponsored entirely by YIMBY-endorsed supervisors:
"Sponsors: Matt Dorsey, Rafael Mandelman, Stephen Sherrill, Danny Sauter, Bilal Mahmood, Alan Wong"
Those are 6 of the 7 YIMBY Action–endorsed members on the board. Watch what YIMBYs do, not what they say.

"The forest gardens were filled with plants that benefited humans, but they also continue to provide food for birds, bears, and insect pollinators, even after 150 years of neglect."
Notice how this debunks mainstream conservationism's dichotomy between "wild" land conserved for the environment's sake, and land developed for human use. Here, human activity improved the land's use both for humans AND the wider web of life we're part of. #ecology

“Asking an AI chatbot a question consumes a great deal more energy than finding the answer via simple web search or calculator. It adds extra demand for no good reason... a bit like driving to the shops in an SUV instead of riding your bike.”
Or driving any kind of car. AI, like cars, aims to reconfigure everyday life in a way that’s vastly more energy-hungry and polluting… and profitable for a few.

This poll does not support the claim of people hating AI even more than they hate ICE. ICE's net favorability was -18, AI's was -20, which is within the 3.10% margin of error.
Moreover, almost all disapproval of ICE is strong disapproval, while about half of negative views of AI are just "somewhat negative," suggesting that continued marketing can shift public opinion of AI to favorable.

In light of that Texas election that saw a 30-point swing toward the Democrats, you might wonder how, if there are reasonably fair midterms, the Democrats could possibly lose.
See above. That’s how they’re going to pull it off. That’s how they’re going to destroy that advantage by proving their uselessness.

It is so clear to me that Waymo, Zoox and other robocars are an existential threat to public transit, they exist to kill and devour it, every robotaxi win is a transit loss and vice versa. He meant so new housing production would start, but the reason we’re supposed to want that is to bring the rent down. Without meaning to, Corey pointed out the incoherence of private-developer-driven YIMBYism.

In 2022, SF voters passed an Empty Homes Tax sponsored by DSA SF and Faith in Action, but it's not being collected due to a landlord lawsuit over their alleged Constitutional right to leave homes empty.
But if landlords don't like a tax on vacant properties, there could be a more direct option. We could simply withdraw property protection services from the vacant properties. Why should taxpayers foot the bill for sheriff's deputies with shields and batons to keep vacant buildings vacant?

2025-08-20 00:41:23 UTC

Sheriffs with shields and batons.
You don't often see it expressed in a visible way like this, but such state violence ultimately backs up all property ownership. Homelessness only exists because if people entered and made a home in a vacant or underused property, the state would use essentially unlimited force to evict them.

On the Bay Area regional transit measure: "A gross receipts tax [rather than sales tax] would ensure that the largest and wealthiest companies contribute their fair share to the infrastructure that helps make their record profits possible. This approach avoids placing an additional burden on families already struggling with the crushing cost of living in the Bay Area." #SB63

back? We had a Uber dropoff lane, then a center lane. This block is now getting its first good bike lane ever.

It’s official: the new Valencia bike lane jogs around Ritual Coffee’s #goodParklet, which stays!

The voters are, but the electeds are another story. If Democratic Party officials followed their voters, we would've had universal healthcare by now.

yeah they drive empty often, which is wonderful, right? Energy consumed per passenger-mile: infinity!
Most people say they stop if you jump in front but I’ve heard a few stories of aggressive behavior toward pedestrians too

Just another Waymo picking up in the bike lane on Townsend and 3rd. They programmed them to do this on purpose. But sure, tell me again how cyclists should worship robocars as our traffic-safety saviors. 😒 #bikeTooter

TIL there are California natives in the Oxalis family, such as Oxalis oregana (redwood sorrel), so I need to be more specific and say that it's the invasive Oxalis pes-caprae (sourgrass) that is my nemesis, not "Oxalis"

No thank you. Harris underperformed in her home state because she abandoned progressives in a failed attempt to court Republicans. That's not the energy we need in California.

Who should have that authority then? The president being commander in chief of the armed forces is intended to ensure civilian control of the military.

good day to remember statements like "Canada wants X, the US wants Y" are meaningless. countries do not have wants, they are not people. specific individuals who currently head the governments in those countries want things.

When
- one in four cars are speeding by >10mph,
- on a *four lane* one-way stroad,
- that consistently stands out like a sore thumb on your fatal crash map,
maybe do a damn road diet instead of spending *more* money to mail tickets after the fact.
