@nprofile…gmhu it also doesn't help that ratings is an arbitrary measurement that they aren't transparent about. Some streaming providers expect you to watch the week of to count, some will factor in people who binge at the end of the season and others won't.
They constantly talked shit about discovery and how few people were watching, but when Nielsen ratings showed the last season did just as good as that geriatric nostalgia wank fest that was season three Picard? No apologies for canceling Disco.
They're rich assholes, who try to shape the world in their image, which has nothing to do with reality, and unfortunately the rest of us get stuck with the bill.

I don't remember which book I tried, but I remember bouncing off Discworld when I tried it. Don't even remember what didn't vibe for me, just that I were 'huh, I don't get it' and moved on. But given everything I've learned about Pratchett since and all the quotes I see you all pass around, it has come to confuse me.
Is there a particular book you all recommend for me to start from if I try it again?

@nprofile…6auh Unfortunately, some neuromundanes don't see entertainment as a thing to entertain, it's about keeping up with what everyone else is watching so they can be involved in the conversation. So for people like that? Summaries would potentially sound appealing, but the errors that will inevitably come up will get them caught at it... unless everyone they're talking to is getting the same faulty summary... then who knows, everyone will be talking about how Superman threw the Earth into the sun in the latest movies.

Got The Eagles stuck in my head earlier, so I put on the Hotel California album to scratch that itch. I'd forgotten that one ended with Last Resort, which hits even harder than it did originally in this day of hyper capitalistic burn everything down for profit bullshit. So I decided to pull up more info on it, and saw a comparison to Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi, which has long since been a favorite... so I popped that on next, followed by her album Hejira, which opens with Coyote. While I can't articulate why I enjoy it as much as I do, it's honestly one of those song that sticks in your brain like peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth.

I need to get a fresh copy of Snow Crash. I think I let my last ex borrow it when we were still dating and didn't get it back before I cut off contact with him. Irksome as it was an early edition hardbound copy. The dust jacket was trashed, and it had seen better days though. So probably for the better.

@nprofile…36te So that would achieve half my goal of ensuring I don't get the mailer, but it wouldn't do anything about the fact that they're still sending out a mailer addressed to me and using the paper and spending the money on it. If they're going to insist on doing the mailer, I'd rather they focus on people who are going to be converted into donors, instead of wasting it on me or someone else who won't donate as a response to the mailer.

Anyone using #PopOS know why the fuck the deb for #Krita that I can install from the Pop Shop doesn't have #GMIC working? (And don't tell me to install the fucking flatpak, fuck that flatpak shit.) The Krita website says that it's supposed to be included since version 5.0, and I've got 5.0.2 on my system. >.< When I go to the G'MIC site, it doesn't have anything for Krita to download to install, and I installed the general interface version from deb and can open that directly, but I want to use the tools on something saved in the Krita file type. >.<

@nprofile…r6kg That's one of the things I love on Sharkey and wish Masto would steal. Any media I've uploaded is in my drive, and it saves the alt text. So very helpful. Also great when I have a picture on my phone, but I want to do all my typing on my computer: upload to the drive from my phone, then alt text and post from the computer.

@nprofile…jymx I can say that reading the alt text on @nprofile…klsv is usually great. The only quibble is they put the alt for all their images on the first image usually, but that's easily understood after a moment's thought, so it's not a big deal. They're currently taking a break, so there aren't any recent posts, so make sure you go to their instance to seen past efforts.

Okay. So. I guarantee you that most Windows users—especially ones on Fedi—know how fucked up Windows has become. Bombarding them with "Install #Linux, we have cookies!" propaganda isn't going to send them rushing to download an image and flash it to a usb drive to install.
They know Windows is a nightmare, they want the nightmare to stop. But there are a lot of reasons stopping them from installing Linux.
One of the biggest ones is that even as Linux has gotten easier and easier to install, it's still a really big step for a lot of people. Maybe they only have one computer, and can't risk slagging it if they mess up. Maybe they don't even know where to start backing up their data. Google and the other search engines are returning AI slop, so they can't trust those to give them accurate and useful answers.
So instead of trying to convince them they want to switch, we need to help them find the resources necessary to do so if they decide they're ready. We need to be the opposite of all those fucking RTFM bros that made it hard when we first switched. We need to make sure they can find a helpful community to give them the support to feel safe in switching.
Because yeah, Windows fucking sucks. They know that, we know that. But breaking their computer so it works even less is fucking terrifying, and Linux has a fucking PR problem because the RTFM bros are the loudest members of our community.
