You know, I've found with talking about my own life, mental health, & emotional struggles that the more specific I am to my experience, the more likely someone is to tell me that something I wrote was significant or meaningful in a very personal way to them.
I do not think avoiding specificity makes something universally accessible. It frequently means that you're creating something that can't really speak to anyone. There's a paradox here: it's the specificity that speaks clearly to people.

I think of Hayao Miyazaki's obsession with the buildings in his movies (I've got a book just on the architecture in Studio Ghibli films)—how they need to tell specifics about those who inhabit them. The little details aren't flourishes just to make things look nice: they carry the content of the story. They define characters & places, so that we really *understand* them.
For truly dense, rich storytelling in a visual medium, the visual details are absolutely essential.

The sacking of Troy likewise. We're supposed to feel the brutality, but without gore & with very, very little blood, there is no impact.
This is not the main criticism I expected to come away with, but this absolutely kills it for me.
This is like The Odyssey for kids. Or it would be if it wasn't so long & repetitive.

The Cyclops is showing eating people, but we don't see their bodies torn in half, we don't see their blood dripping down its chin, & it is a PROBLEM for me. There's no horror to these scenes. It's just "whoops! There goes a guy."
Nolan uses squishy sounds when something which *should* be gory happens, so that the audience knows it's icky & gross, but he won't show it.
In this bloodless movie, people are brutally killed often, but it will never once make you feel uncomfortable.

Annoyed when Nolan namechecks his "friend" Guillermo del Toro in Odyssey promo interviews (are they friends or are they Hollywood "friends"?) & says he learned from him that "a monster is never just a monster."
That it sounds to me like when someone is pretending they have some meaningful connection with someone who is well revered, because to say you "learned" such a generic thing from the guy suggests you are neither closely connected to him nor a particular fan of his work.

Not to over-read things, but when the director makes movies with almost exclusively white male protagonists (maybe exclusively, I just couldn't say for sure about his filmography), I think there is a very literal sense in which his films *center* white men.

What do you think? Do you think putting everything smack dab in the middle of the frame is Nolan's default? How do you think this compares with the styles of other "auteur" filmmakers?
If you see this tendency in Nolan, how do you feel about it? Do you like it or even prefer it? Or does it put you off?
My first thoughts are that it seems safe, boring, & maybe a wee bit lazy artistically, but I dunno. A lot of people *really* like his style & think his films look incredible.

The first scenes of Batman Begins are doing nothing to disprove the hypothesis.
There isn't anything inherently wrong with the idea. I think some people would consider it part of Nolan's "naturalistic" style.
But if it is as unvarying as I suspect, it may grow boring over time & Nolan may miss opportunities to create dynamic images or use provocative visual storytelling.

The "true" format of The Odyssey tells you who this movie is for—who the desired audience is—& it's not for most of us plebes.
I mean, what tf is that?
I'm lucky though, there's one 70mm IMAX theater under 100 miles from me (97 miles in fact). A mere 1 hour 40 minutes to be able to see this film.

Gotta be honest, I just don't like Chris Nolan. Not the man. Not the artist.
I will give him Memento. I will grant that I greatly admire that work, & I do believe that *he* must have been pretty damn clever & creative to make that a functioning film.
I find however that his body of work as a whole is fundamentally conservative in outlook & messaging, & I am exhausted by the hype around his "greatness".

Is he trying to evoke the feel of a college production of a play? This would count as competent costuming in some contexts under certain limitations, of course. Blockbuster movie shot on extremely high def film is a weird one though.

If I were trying to be fair, I should really wait to form a judgement of the film, but I'm struggling mightily with that.
I believe this is a real image of Tom Holland in his costume. It's killing me to look at it.
I know being a Guillermo del Toro fan girlie means I'm pretty obsessive about movie details, but if this is really the costume? Yikes. It's far more fucking low effort than the costuming in so many low budget, schlocky films.

So yeah, pardon my skepticism that—even putting ethnicity issues aside—Matt Damon is capable of embodying the character of Odysseus.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's the greatest performance of his career.
But come on.
The character of Odysseus IS the Odyssey. If you actually want to do a high-minded adaptation, it would require an absolutely magnetic performance from someone.

I should know this by now.
As an adult I found out that basically no one else in my family growing up was really aware of how much everyone else was suffering through that whole time.
So I should know by now that most people aren't looking at the same things I am. They aren't on the hunt for pain, anger, frustration, sadness, etc. in everyone's eyes. They aren't evaluating every little response to every little thing & trying to decipher the implications for peace & group cohesion.

I don't think I need to "not all men", but I do want to be clear, as the daughter of a father who loved me very much, women are not simply the "better" parent by default.
Women are often the "better" parent in certain situations, because men are simply allowed & even encouraged to be abusive & irresponsible in their personal relationships.

You need to feel acceptance. You need to feel whole.
Give to others the kindness & acceptance you want to feel, & then give yourself the same. Approach yourself with curiosity & kindness. Ask yourself what you need & then honor that the way you would honor the needs of your dearest loved ones.

It's important to be clear: other people's experiences & "truths" don't trump yours. If their feelings & experiences are valid, then so are yours. That's where relationship maintenance comes in.
You have to be honest with yourself & with them when they are violating your boundaries or ignoring your needs.
Whatever they are going through doesn't mean they get to do that to you, even if you wish you could be simply the most supportive person in the world. Don't harm yourself in the process.

I think this is separate from standard emotional maintenance of your relationships, because in your relationships with other people, sometimes you do have to tell them how it is, at least from your side of the experience.
But when you want to be really present for someone through the hard shit, you create the accepting space for them where they can tell you THEIR truths.

Environmental destruction is getting really bad, but it's almost shocking how many living creatures you can encourage just by creating a small area with the right conditions.
A lot of "personal responsibility" stuff is bunk. It's usually things you can do that *maybe* make the *tiniest* possible difference. Fostering the conditions for native plant & animal life though? I think if you have even a little land that you control, you may be surprised by the number of living things that show up.

I DO experience that as painful alienation, but I have a hard time feeling sure that's the intent.
And when I do respond in a way that indicates I understood the hostility, I often get gaslit by being told I'm overreacting to a harmless comment.
I see now that's often because it's not ok to directly address someone else's hostility, NOT because people don't recognize that hostility was present.

I watched a video of someone asking their AI assistant if they should drink from a "water bottle" they found, which was in fact a bottle of bleach.
The AI did exactly as expected: "you go, girl! Drink from that water bottle, you super genius!"
It's concerning, of course, that this "tool" people are being told to trust is worse than useless, but frankly it was how much pointless, silly praise the bot was spitting out that really deserved me.

I once told my ex-SIL I was on a mood stabilizer medication, & she said that she had taken it to treat her epilepsy.
She had a very bad reaction to the medication, so she tried to convince me that it was bad for me, & I shouldn't be on it.
I'd just like to say to everyone: don't do that.
It was fucking frustrating to get lectured about a medication that was helping me because SHE had a bad reaction when it was prescribed to HER for a *completely* different reason.

I was taught by Christian conservatism that one should never give help to an impoverished person with no strings attached.
In that philosophy, being in a position to need help means that others have the right to control you. Giving "aid" under that schema is using poverty in the way oppressors intended: as a way to dominate others.
Being impoverished is a function of oppression, not a personal failing, & exerting control over someone will not relieve the conditions that got them to this point.

It's actually easier in some circumstances to stand up for yourself if *you* have been punished for it vs. having mostly watched others be punished for it, isn't it?
Having experienced how much it sucks to be punished vs how much it sucks to just shut up & let shit happen, we'll choose the temporary pain of being punished over the long-term pain of being mistreated.

It splits half & half right down the middle. Myself, my little brother, & our little sister are vocal about our needs. Not without anxiety. There is a lot of self-doubt, but we know that we have to stand up for ourselves.
Our 3 older siblings though? Much less likely to stand up to unfairness, even when they are on the receiving end.

My parents didn't mean to, but they taught my older siblings a lot of quite antisocial things through how they parented *me*.
It's not isolated. It wasn't just my experience. My siblings watched & learned. They learned that being unkind is ok, but it's not ok for someone to complain of it.
I would have to guess that they didn't just learn not to worry about being considerate but that they also didn't learn to object when they are the ones not receiving consideration. It's a trap.

It's always felt a little odd because I would say that in general—abusive religion aside—our parents were quite tender & loving with us.
My mom & dad are not indifferent to how their actions affect others in the way my sister seems to be (as evidenced by the fact that they have APOLOGIZED for some of this shit), but my sister wasn't looking just at their behavior.
She was learning how to think & behave from the things they punished as parents vs. those they encouraged.

Now we are adults & guess which one of us has found/created emotionally fulfilling & supportive relationships & which one does not connect with other people much at all.
Seriously, I am angry over the treatment I didn't deserve, but I would not swap places with my sister for *anything*.
[Caveat: making friends can be hard for a multitude of reasons. Not having friends is not proof you are unkind, but unkind people often struggle to make friends, especially good ones, for obvious reasons].

I think perhaps the thing I got punished for the most as a kid could be boiled down to "not being calm".
My parents' Christian beliefs said that even *if* someone was being cruel or unfair, the responsibility of a Christian was basically to tolerate it without complaint.
So if I got upset & raised my voice & wouldn't become calm again, I was "sinning". It did not matter what happened to reach that situation.

FYI, some anti-homeless installations can be dismantled easily with the right tools. If you notice this shit in your neighborhood, maybe take a look to see how the obstruction is attached to the surface it is on.
It's possible that in some scenarios all someone would need is a socket wrench. If that someone is a white man wearing an orange vest, they might even get away with walking up & just removing something in broad daylight.

If you are a man whose wife was abusive, I absolutely think that's something you should talk about, if you want to.
It's important to deal with your trauma & to discuss the ways men may get trapped in abuse due to patriarchal ideas as well (because that's the thing: patriarchy hurts all of us. Patriarchy has exploits that can be used to harm & trap men too).
But don't have that convo in women's mentions when they are talking about the effects of patriarchy & misogyny on them.

If you feel that some personal experience or trauma of yours is invalidated by a marginalized person is talking about their experiences with oppression, injustice, & the power dynamics of the kyriarchy, I would recommend that—instead of replying—you think & write about that experience on your own without anger at marginalized people for describing experiences that are not the same as yours.

I frequently write about my frustration with people generally making selfish choices & having kids out of obligation or vanity or failure to think things through. However, I am writing right now about something specific & gendered. There's no need to take away from that conversation just because women can be selfish parents too.

I'm not talking simply about "unethical reasons people want to have kids". I am talking about an experience many women have with their male partners. There is no reason to hijack this conversation away from that.
Yes, people of all genders make bad & selfish choices when it comes to having kids, but that's not what I'm talking about here.

I'd have to disagree, especially in light of the previous posts in this thread.
Sure, you could argue that some women may have a similar attitude, but in general women are significantly more aware of the personal cost & commitment of having children than men tend to be. It would be hard *not* to be.
Meanwhile, a lot of men try to pressure their female partners to have kids that they only plan to do the "fun bits" of parenting with.

Do they want them enough to risk their lives & bodies (as well as their earning/career potential) & to commit to 2 decades of non-stop work caring for that kid?

Despite all the cultural regression in various areas, I see hope that societally some things are moving in good directions.
I watch various commentary & reaction videos on YouTube, & what I find interesting is that I'm seeing more & more cis straight guys able to articulate clearly issues of misogyny that used to seem so hard to get men to even *acknowledge* not that long ago.

Men have their "sexual preference" dictated to them from childhood, & this too is about control.
It's about controlling women, of course, but also about controlling men themselves.
Toxic masculinity centers on competition for status. Women who look a certain way do more for your status. So instead of seeking their own happiness, men continue to struggle constantly in this ridiculous capitalistic rat race to acquire status.

I am convinced that the primary reason being fat is associated with risk of early death is that doctors won't treat fat people until they lose weight.
I don't know how many stories I have heard about fat people who—after YEARS of going to the doctor complaining of health issues & being sent away without any further investigation—found out they were in advanced stages of cancer (or another illness) that should have been caught & treated long ago.

- Access to healthcare (without financial strain)
- Not being overworked & overstressed
- Experiencing fulfillment in one's labor
- Access to better food
- Feeling worthy of care & loving oneself

You want people to be healthy? That's what people fucking need, not shame, derision, "helpful advice", or being denied healthcare until they lose weight.

Fatphobia is still widely accepted, & this is a fucking problem for every marginalized group, because it is a tool to train us that *some people* do not deserve dignity.
It may not *seem* like the most pressing of bigotries, but I think a big part of its function is to train us all from childhood that human dignity is not inherent, & that it is ok to select targets for abuse as long as they are the "right" target.

I believe the thing that most recently caught my attention was watching a movie where British people were pronouncing certain Hindi words & it was really jarring to hear them spoken that way.
I wouldn't expect an American to pronounce them correctly. I would expect an American to pronounce them using the "foreign language pronunciation rules."
