If you look at music and media in the 80s and then think about how punk and political hip hop gradually disappeared in the 90s. Then the writer's strike that helped create reality TV shows that people believed were real. It's been a perfect storm of eroding individualism and critical thinking. Religious people are more prone to get sucked into cults because they aren't able to distinguish reality from fiction. I can't find the article I read about this. There are also too many people who think movies are real, which is why there's an actual condition called Paris derangement syndrome. I shit you not. Then there's people who are resistant to cults.
