New blog post: Proposal for a dedicated archive site for #Wikipedia
https://blog.legoktm.com/2026/08/28/proposal-for-a-dedicated-archive-site-for-wikipedia.html
In February when English Wikipedia banned usage of archive.today there was a bit of a crisis in needing to find alternative archives.
As far as I know, no solution has actually materialized, so I thought I'd at least write down my idea.
In short, I think the social and legal parts of this are far harder to get right; in comparison the technology seems pretty straightforward.

"So what, some say, if he is legally barred from ever seeking the White House? Republicans do illegal things all the time. They’ve been talking about running Trump for an equally unconstitutional third term since he won the election. Most might dismiss such thoughts out of hand, but I find it to be more fun to entertain them."

there's a generational / gerontocracy aspect to it as well. The party leadership has a stance of "you need to wait your turn" and I think we're all pretty fed up with waiting!
The average age of the NYC House delegation was 57, it's now going to be 48, literally a decade younger.

oh 100%. Asking Claude Opus 4.5 something as simple as "identify security issues in this codebase" was enough to have it report this issue.
I don't know if a human would have ever spotted this issue, it's incredibly subtle.

RE: https://social.freedom.press/@securedrop/116805553545070289
The low priority issue we disclosed today managed to get assigned CVE-2026-50000.
Didn't include this in the writeup, but just for the purpose of keeping score, this would likely not have happened if it was written in #Rust because mutability is part of the type system, so you don't end up accidentally mutating what should be an immutable object!

🚨 🚨 🚨
Darializa Avila Chevalier, a PhD student, aka "DAC" has defeated 10-year incumbent Adriano Espaillat, Chair of the Hispanic Caucus, who had been in elected office since 1997.
This is a far far bigger upset than Zohran (an elected official) defeating Cuomo (a scandal-tarred candidate who already had to resign).

Comptroller: I voted for Warshaw over Goyle, a lot of people who I respect have endorsed the latter but he was a former *Republican* state legislator in Kansas and has voting record is kind of terrible.
Either way DiNapoli (inc.) will likely win as the two progressives split the vote, hopefully next cycle everyone gets behind a single candidate.
For state legislator, I would recommend following Zohran, Bernie and AOC's endorsements. In one nice table: https://x.com/admcrlsn/status/2060773722751939045

One year ago today. Zohran's primary win was so dramatic and unexpected that he didn't even have a victory speech prepared. (And I suspect most people on Fedi didn't yet know who he was!)
Today the socialist & left bloc in NYC is challenging at least 5 U.S. House seats, 2 state senate seats, 9+ state assembly seats to prove this wasn't a one-time thing.
Voting is open until 9pm; resources and recommendations in 🧵 below.

Come on, this is so blatantly false. Zohran did not raise the NYC minimum wage to $30/hr, he had honestly very little to do with the drop in violent crime, and he hasn't marched for trans rights in "his first 150 days"!! those photos are from last year's pride march
The recovery of $5M for gig workers is dubious to credit Zohran for, that was mostly under Eric Adams.
I honestly don't get it, he's done a number of good things, why lie and make up other things???

that there's a pretty common distinction between providing "legal/financial/medical advice" and providing general information, even if the latter is about legal, financial, or medical topics.
the problem isn't the disclaimer, it's that chatbots often give said professional advice in a manner which would get a human sanctioned/prosecuted if they did the exact same thing, c.f. a bill my state senator is working on: https://www.nysenate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2026/kristen-gonzalez/ny-state-senator-kristen-gonzalez-her-bill-address-ai

Wikipedia has roughly the exact same disclaimer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer
"Not professional advice: If you need specific advice (for example, medical, legal, financial, or risk management), please seek a professional who is licensed or knowledgeable in that area."
Wikipedia also tracks others that have similar disclaimers, like the New York Times, AP, Encyclopædia Britannica, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Non-Wikipedia_disclaimers
(not an endorsement of the practice, just that it's quite common and not an "AI is bad"!!)

sure, I just don't think that's realistic. We'll see :)

I...don't think that's within the realm possibility. It was in federal court, and states bring and win "interstate" antitrust cases all the time without DoJ.
If it does get tossed (I doubt it, what does SCOTUS have to gain by going to bat for Ticketmaster?) I would expect it to be on some random technicality or by nerfing the remedy

💯 I thought we all learned this after the Hulk Hogan lawsuit!!

I would've been shocked if a *jury* didn't find #Ticketmaster guilty

Kudos to the (lowercase) united States for sticking with the case after the (uppercase) United States tried to corruptly cut a deal.
Now it's time for remedies!

interesting, I suspect there are probably non-case decision things that the court votes on that they've reversed in a shorter timeframe, like sometimes the court will hear a case, do oral arguments, and then decide that actually they didn't want to hear the case after all.
Or temporary stays being lifted after the situation changes?
That article needs a lot of work :v

Incredible, someone at Red Hat is apparently reading my toots and slowly scrubbing their website of references to their "compressing the kill cycle" project.
Here's the file they don't want you to read: https://web.archive.org/web/20260402155236/https://www.redhat.com/rhdc/managed-files/ve-compress-the-kill-cycle-detail-693397pr-202402-en_3.pdf
p.s. if you work at Red Hat and have inside info on what's going on, my Signal is "@legoktm.12345" - happy to protect you.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@nathandyer/116353464692290660
Red Hat has since removed their war crime-supporting "Compress the kill cycle" marketing page from their website but left other references up, e.g. https://www.redhat.com/rhdc/managed-files/ve-compress-the-kill-cycle-detail-693397pr-202402-en_3.pdf (also saved on IA now)
A really good summary of what compressing the kill cycle means in practical terms was recently published in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/mar/26/ai-got-the-blame-for-the-iran-school-bombing-the-truth-is-far-more-worrying

2026-03-29 15:08:17 UTC

I don't know why people are focusing on IBM's history when we know that Red Hat, today, is a military contractor working with the US Air Force to make their AI-powered drones faster so they can "compress the kill cycle" (a real thing they advertise!!) in all of the US's illegal wars

@npub1uur…9kt2 California has had it for at least a decade now, maybe two. For the most part it's not that bad, tbh it usually benefits Dems who lock Rs out of random races. Real RCV would be way better.
(I think the gubernatorial lockout scenario is just fearmongering and driving hype to a race that no one is really paying attention to yet...if there were any real chance it was gonna happen you'd have like Obama and Pelosi intervening asap)

To celebrate, I wrote for @npub1hxa…caxd about how Wikipedia would not exist today without the robust free speech and press protections in the U.S., and that we need to sustain and expand them if we want to survive for another 25 years.

ZOHRAN MAMDANI WILL BE THE NEXT MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY

2025-11-03 00:06:11 UTC

Started canvassing for #Zohran at 9am today, ran into two dudes from Spain, who, after apologizing for not being able to vote, wanted to take a selfie with us and said "Good luck, socialism is possible!"
And...it seems to be working, today saw more votes (151k) than on the equivalent day in the *2024 general election* (149k), which is insane!!!!

New project: Where's Eric?
https://legoktm.com/wheres-eric/
Every morning, Politico's NY Playbook publishes a summary of the governor's and mayor's public schedules. That is, if it receives one.
Lately though, Eric Adams' schedule has simply been "Schedule unavailable". In fact, over the past 8 weeks, his schedule has been unavailable 65% of the time.
(okay this project made a lot more sense when Adams was a mayoral candidate)
I've written about the project and motivation at https://blog.legoktm.com/2025/09/30/wheres-eric-tracking-ny-politicians-public-schedules.html

Great post by @npub12aw…g35g on the hacking of admissions records from Columbia:
"The best way to avoid misuse of personal data is not to collect it. If it has been collected, and especially if it is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was collected, the best way to mitigate the risk to the individuals to whom it pertains is to expunge it."
https://papersplease.org/wp/2025/07/08/the-dangers-of-identity-databases/
Also that EU/Canadian privacy laws mandate deletion - a clear example where the US is behind and the harms that follow.

Michael Lange has seen enough: Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic Primary for NYC Mayor, defeating Andrew Cuomo.

I always believed it was possible but wow, this is such a dominant win.

New blog post: Archiving Hell Gate's FYIs
https://blog.legoktm.com/2025/05/08/archiving-hell-gates-fyis.html
Hell Gate's website has a "FYI" blurb which is usually one to two sentences with a link to a story about some current event.
Unfortunately it's not well advertised; so I've created an archive of them and set up an RSS feed:

New blog post: Boba Quest 2025 🧋
https://blog.legoktm.com/2025/01/07/boba-quest-2025-.html
I will be trying and reviewing a different #boba shop each week, totaling 50 new places over the year (hopefully). I've devised a 10-point scale to grade each shop, which is different than how I've done it in the past.
Let me know if you have recommendations; the first review will drop tomorrow.

An ambulance crosses into the #CongestionPricing zone. EMS and FDNY response times have gone up over the past decade because of increased congestion - the toll should help speed them up:
