I’m just a tourist with a camera, but photography makes me focus more intently at the landscape, esp smaller details I would otherwise miss. I spend more time thinking about angles, viewpoints, lighting, clouds. Yesterday I logged in to the Parks Canada reservation site using my “GCKey” to cancel some camping reservations and even though I used my correct saved username/password, I was apparently flagged anyway(?), which apparently immediately revoked my credentials.
I must now create an entirely new profile, including username and email address. How annoying

Haha, right? I’m skeptical of the whole island thing to begin with (we’re talking Nebraska here), but I am sure that it’s not a grand one. 😆
I saw a few explanations, but the one that seems the most likely was that there was a long narrow island formed by some braiding in the Platte River, and French fur traders called it La Grande Isle. The town was supposed to be established on it (a rather dumb idea), but instead ended up on the north bank nearby.

Had an excellent time last night on our moonlight paddle down the Lower Salt River. A great way to celebrate Brittany’s birthday, finally meet up with an internet buddy, and very belatedly kick off paddling season. It’s always great to spend an evening on the river.

Today is the one year anniversary of my dad’s death.
It’s been a weird year since he passed away. I’ve vacillated between reflection, gratitude, sadness, and confusion. Today, I’m commemorating it with a beverage (or several) at the place we’d enjoy happy hour together in his last few years.

And not only different rules for areas within the same state, but even different rules within the same national forest within the same state. That’s mostly due to conservation or recreation overlay designations that can added to forests and public lands to better protect certain resources or address the impacts of high-use areas. It can all be a bit hard to parse out without checking on specific rules for the trail you’ll be on.

These rankings never make sense. “Natural environment” category is heavily influenced by air and water quality (where you are talking about minor differences in measurements between the states, and averaged across the entire state in spite of the localization of many of these issues), but that category somehow doesn’t include access to parks and public lands? Okay.

Thanks Tim. The toppling here is sadly due to failing health, so we need to visit sooner than original expected. It throws a monkeywrench into our plans, adding more cost and time time.
But we'll find a way to make all the important bits work, though I expect the "fun" part of the trip to look quite a bit differently as a result. I'll be in touch once we chart out an alternative, which we probably won't get to until late next week at the earliest.

Ten years ago today, my dog Sipapu died quite unexpectedly. A rez dog, my ex and I had unwittingly rescued him near Monument Valley as we returned from a long road trip. He was emaciated, hobbled, and had a broken tail. Sipapu seemed like a good name for the new life he would now have. I miss him.

🤒 Welp, we both managed to get sick on our last day in Sri Lanka. So we pulled an audible and canceled our visit to the Maldives and headed to Singapore early. Stopped at a clinic in the airport for some meds.

The highlight of Yala Natl Park—perhaps the top wildlife experience of our whole trip—was seeing a Sri Lankan leopard! We followed it for a long time, tracking it thru four areas of dense vegetation.
But this last portion was the best: we watched it (unsuccessfully) go after a spotted deer! -S🇱🇰

💆 We returned to Dar es Salaam this morning, where we said goodbye to our 24-day overlanding tour, some of whom are continuing on to Kenya and Uganda.
This is day 50 of our trip, and we’ll recoup and relax here for the next couple of days, as we shift from African safari mode to tropical island mode.
