Time for round 4 of this 2025 retrospective. I’m trying to mix up the pictures so it’s a cross section of genres and styles in the hope there’s something for everyone!
Which is your favourite from this set?
1. Meeting overlanders on the road is great not just because it’s fun to meet with like-minded people, but also because it’s great to share location knowledge. This park up was one such recommendation and proved to be an absolute stunner, with incredible views towards China across a dried river valley (see picture 3!) 📍Kyrgyzstan
2. We’d heard about a nomad festival in Bokonbayevo, Kyrgyzstan and managed to get ourselves there on the right day to watch. With archery, horsemanship, taigan dogs and eagle hunting… and all of them at once… it made an incredible day out and seeing people, men and women alike, cantering flat out while shooting bow and arrows from horseback, and hitting their thrown targets (like clay pigeon shooting from horseback with a bow) we were blown away by both the skill and bravery of the nomads.
3. Dried river bed, Kyrgyzstan. I spent multiple flights with the drone flying over this river bed studying the other-worldly patterns below.
4. On the shores of Lake Issy-Kul, and endorheic, saline lake in the Tian Shan mountains. Conveniently, despite its altitude it never freezes and is known locally as “warm lake.” It is the second largest mountain lake in the world. And the site of another amazing parkup that offered scenery, great walks, fun mountain biking and smooth waters for swimming and paddleboarding. Or even just somewhere to throw stones in the water!
5. Waiting for our Russian transit visa to come through, we spent a week or so touring around Georgia. Quite delightfully it was wildflower season and this meadow was a route of different wildflowers, so in single blocks like here, some like an artist’s palette of colours. Otis, our Hungarian vizsla, is happiest chasing stones. And if chasing stones includes leaping through the flowers like a stotting deer, so much the better!

Part 3 of my favourite pics from 2025.
What’s your favourite from this set?
1. Turkey. On the drive to Ishak Pasha Palace I pulled over on the side of the road, clambered in the truck roof and grabbed this shot as the rain fell in the distance.
2. Kyrgyzstan. The Kara Bura pass was our first route in Kyrgyzstan. The coloured earth, exposed edges and spectacular views made for an incredible introduction to this most naturally beautiful of countries.
3. Shymkent, Kazakhstan. A city I’d never heard of but one that was such a joy to visit. It’s mostly set up to appeal to Kazakh tourists, but the combination of a great city centre park-up (very rare!) a fabulous mosque in the same style as you’d find in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and great child friendly facilities made it a winner. Especially this splash pad that Isla loved playing around in cooling off from the summer heat.
4. Zanzibar, Tanzania. As part of my most recent work trip I visited Zanzibar including a trip to a local school to see the education system there at work, with the children learning English as well as Swahili.
5. Early in the year, on a beach in Greece. We took a small car ferry across to Elafonisos and spent a couple of days enjoying the beaches to ourselves. It was cool, but the water was clear and having no one else around was quite the joy (I sound like a hermit now!) of course a family fun aerial picture was essential!

Interesting. I’ll have to have a better think about then.
My challenge is that my life is all around photography - we travel and I take pictures. And when I’m not travelling in the truck, it’s because I’m working, travelling and taking pictures for my clients.
That said, keeping them separate allows me to post images that maybe wouldn’t be as interesting to truck life followers.
Although the final question is what do I hope to achieve with my accounts? What’s the outcome of posting? Is it just stacking Sats? Sharing my work? Looking for sponsorship? Connecting with others?
I should probably start there and that’ll help clarify whether keeping them distinct or muddling them together is the better option 🤔

As someone who is embarking on homeschooling, or maybe world schooling, with our 5yr old as we travel the world in our expedition truck I’ll be listening to this with interest.

#2 in this retrospective of favourite images from 2025. These are all Kyrgyzstan (do you get the feeling I liked it there?!)
1. Lenin Peak, Kyrgyzstan. One of the easiest 7000+m mountains to climb (apparently, I didn’t go up there) and often used a training ground for Everest.
2. Isla and her friend Matilda walking back to the truck after a morning of “homeschooling” that involved a hike up to a viewpoint, artwork in the wildness and clambering over rocks and boulders to learn about mountain safety. The rainbow mountains make a spectacular backdrop!
3. Jess and Otis. This was shot on our way up the Kumtor Gold Mine Route. Captured as a marketing image for Kovered Bags (use code “GLOBALTRACES” for 15% off their bags… which make awesome Christmas presents!)
4. Crossing a dried up high altitude lake to one of the best park up spots we’ve had … so great we visited twice and spent about 4 days there in total. The park up is unofficially titled “Desert Rock Dream” in iOverlander (an App we use to find parking places) and it really is an incredible out of the way dreamscape place to hang out.
5. The night before we crossed in to Tajikistan (the other side of those mountains in the background) we parked next to a dried river bed. Fortunately we didn’t park in the river bed, because not long after this was taken the meltwater from the mountains decided to flow through turning a dry river bed to a raging torrent! Before that though, Isla was in her element playing out in the wilds.

The year is drawing to an end, so it’s time for a little round up!
Over the next week or two I’m going to flood this feed with some of my favourite pictures from 2025. A bit like a retrospective.
Some of them will be “work” pictures, some will be ones that are available in my print store and some will be family truck life from our travels.
All of them have a story.
In today’s five:
1. This is home. A couple of days before we nearly rolled the truck down a hill, we were enjoying the Assay Plateau near a former Soviet Observatory in Kazakhstan.
Great light, great scenery, friendly locals.
2. Lenin Peak, Kyrgyzstan. One of the best star fields I’ve seen anywhere, and that includes sailing across the Atlantic.
3. Dalmatian Pelican, Lake Kerkini. These enigmatic birds are huge and menacing in look. They were under threat of extinction, but thanks to great conservation efforts, especially around Lake Kerkini, they’re making a strong comeback.
4. The Tien Shan Mountains on the Kumtor Goldmine Route in Kyrgyzstan. A spectacular route, a slightly nervy bridge crossing, glorious scenery and the joy of bumping in to other overlanders.
5. Otis. Posing remarkably motionless in a waterfall in Georgia. Overlanding takes us to these kind out of the way places. Places where few others get to. And we get to explore them from the comfort of our home.

Dinner is served… on the beach in Oman.
One of the joys of my job is the incredible table settings (and great food) I get to photograph and eat. And this one, on the beach in Salalah, Oman, was no exception. A really beautiful tablescape, backed by the ocean and overhead fairy lights completing the scene.
For those curious, I’m the photographer for the Abercrombie&Kent Private Jet around the world tours. This trip was cultural based, while my upcoming February trip is all about wildlife.
And then… after that trip, we will get back to travelling in the truck! I promise!

Pre-dawn reflected in the fountain at the front of the Raffles Hotel, Udaipur.
The Raffles in Udaipur is one of their newest properties and is located on a secluded island in the middle of one of the lakes. It’s genuinely a beautiful hotel and the staff are, as you may expect, super helpful.

Udaipur, India. A lady sitting outside her house near the temple cleans her chai set and prepares a cup of chai.
I was drawn to the simple, but vibrant, colour palette and the “unseen moment” soothing that happens hundreds or thousands of times every day across India, but normally goes unnoticed.
India is a photographer’s paradise. There is something about the light there…. It’s bright, but the thickness of the air, or some may say the smog, makes it diffuse and flattering for people photography. And it really helps the colours of their vibrant clothing, that despite the mess they find themselves surrounded by are always clean, crisp and glowing, pop.

Sticking with our Laos stop on my work trip, we visited an artists house and got to see incredible art work being produced, including by this young Buddhist monk who was making paper stencil cutouts that would later be used in repainting the inside of his temple.
The calm attention to detail and precision of his work was mesmerising to watch and the beautiful natural light, especially that bouncing up from the paper he was cutting, made for an incredible scene I had to watch for a while before capturing.

We stopped at a temple in Laos on my work trip to receive a blessing from the monks.
Once it was over I was hanging around in the temple as all our guests filed out, when I saw this monk come out from the main body of the temple (right of picture) and walk straight towards me. The patches of light from the windows along the corridor and the door in the background gave a sense of depth and intrigue to the picture and his natural, calm demeanour completed the scene.
He then, as he reached the end of the corridor, turned to walk out of the door, the light catching his face and eye as he glanced up on his way through the doorway.

Another shot from my work trip - this on our final stop of the trip in Malta where one excursion was to watch the gun salute.
I took up my position overlooking the saluting battery and selected a fast shutter speed and high speed continuous shooting.
Watching a cannon fire, even dry firing with no cannonball, is quite the experience.

Good news… I’m still alive!
After a month of work on a global private jet tour where I work as the photographer, I got back to Almaty and we decided we should head back to the UK to sort some family stuff out for my Mum. So that’s what we’ve been working on.
Jess and Isla flew back two days ago, Otis and I are currently in Istanbul airport waiting for our second flight.
The truck stays in Kazakhstan and we’ll be reuniting with her in January with the goal of getting in to Mongolia in late spring.
So for now, you’re going to get a bit of a back catalogue from my month away working, starting with this shot of Masaai warriors performing on the beach in Zanzibar.

We completed the Pamir Highway and then continued looping around back in to Kyrgyzstan, so here’s a video travel fact from the Toktogul Dam. You won’t believe quite how much water that holds back!
We’re putting in the kilometres right now as we head back to Almaty. I’ll then be flying out for a month of work taking me to 8 countries. Everyone else will chill out in Kazakhstan until I return and our adventures continue.

I wasn’t analogising fossil fuels to child brides as much as using it an another example of the west telling the developing nations what they have to do.
Our Industrial Revolution laid the foundations for our society as it is - at great cost to the environment with not even a second thought to fossil fuel usage, carbon footprint or carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
But now we’ve learnt more, there are those who want to block the developing nations from using fossil fuels because it’s continuing the destruction of the environment.
To be clear, I think unfettered fossil fuel usage is a bad thing too. But we can’t deny them their development (although a cynic might suggest it’s being done to help keep them down) so there has to be a different solution.
It’s so interwoven that most just ignore it and continue with the status quo - it’s easier to ignore than effect change.
But travelling opens your eyes to their plight. And with a small dose of humanity it’s easy to see it’s not us and them, but we are all one and by raising one group, everyone moves up together.

You’re talking about sociology, I was referencing anthropology at a more basic level - our shared humanity irrespective of colour, race or creed.
To be clear child brides are bad in my opinion.
However the simple words of “incompatible with civilisation” automatically implies an “us and them” division that strips away their humanity and assumes “we” are better.
If you want to discuss that then we need to look back at history. To take one example you’ve brought up - as recently as 800yrs ago the Christian faith said it was okay for girls of 12 and boys of 14 to marry.
Of course times have moved on and it’s no longer condoned. But as with fossil fuel usage and carbon emissions, it’s a privileged position to demand developing countries immediately abide by our rules when we’ve been walking that path of development for a longer time.

The Pamir Highway run right alongside Afghanistan for several hundred kilometres. This is one of the wider sections and it’s still this close.
Close enough to see people in the other side.
To see the wave.
To see them smile.
To know they’re people too.
To remember that people are nice. But people in power are pricks.
Travel. It broadens your horizons. Literally and metaphorically.
There is no us and them.
We are one people.

The border fences and regular three-man military patrol teams on the Tajik side are apparently due to a high level of drugs crossing the border.
The world would be better with no borders, but I fear that won’t happen in our lifetimes. There’s too much divisive “us and them” rhetoric from people in power 😢

There was some planning - truck build etc - and a vague idea of where to go, but really we make it up as we go. Originally on this trip we were only going as far as Georgia and then turning around… but here we are in Tajikistan now 🤷‍♂️

We’re still on the Pamir Highway (it is 1200km long after all!) and while we didn’t drive yesterday (admin and work day for us as I spent all day building a new website for print sales of my photography… more on that when it launches… and doing some admin around the truck - like cleaning the solar panels!)
But the day before was stunning. And hard. We spent all day driving right alongside the Afghanistan border. I don’t think we got more than 500m away from it at any point along about 190km. We even waved to Afghanistanis and they waved back across the river!
There will be pictures, but nothing from the drone… for obvious reasons!!

So the Pamir Highway may be brutal in places, but it’s also beautiful.
Especially as you get a bit lower and the trees start to appear. We drove along imagining we could be in Switzerland (with much worse roads!)
This is in the last 100km towards Khorough, where we are now, that makes about the halfway point of the Pamir. Just 650km to go from Khorough to Dushanbe.

The Pamir Highway ticks all the boxes.
And then shakes the 💩 out of them with the bumps, potholes, tramtracks…and frankly non-existent road surface.

Postcards from Tajikistan
Something you might not realise about the Pamir Highway environment is that it is still highly active with tectonic activity.
The Pamir mountains were formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates and that continuing collision creates geothermal heat deep within the earth.
Combined with groundwater circulation, the area is dotted with hot springs - perfect for soothing bones and brains after a long day of travel through the harsh and unforgiving landscape.

Today was as beautiful as it was brutal.
The first 45km took 3hrs.
I’d love to say it got faster, but after 7hrs of driving we’d completed 115km.
But we started the day, as we did the day before, at Lake Bulunkul. One of the coldest inhabited spots of the former Soviet Union, with -63C having been recorded there in the summer.
It’s a stunning location though, and the mountains provide a natural wind block so it’s breathless in the morning and the water is like a mirror.

Every border crossing we’ve had has been super friendly. Sometimes it takes a while but the people have been nice and happy and easy going.
As for outlaws…. People don’t tend to try and rob 15t, unique, ex-military vehicles, because they’re not quite sure who or what is going to come out!
At no point in our journey so far have we felt threatened anywhere.

Live from the Pamir Highway… this is one section we’re on right now. And no, this is not an off road track but the actual “highway”.
So far today we’ve managed to cover a grand total of 45km.
In 3hrs. 🤯
Also, this is why you do the Pamir in a solid off road vehicle, not a motorhome or converted van.

Postcards from Tajikistan #2
We’ve been a bit lax on the Tajikistan postcards so far. Not because the scenery is bad - far from it - but in comparison to Kyrgyzstan it just hasn’t quite grabbed us in the same way.
Sure the (93% of the country) mountains are incredible and the peaks are spectacular, but perhaps there’s just so much of it, that it’s almost overwhelming.

How big are the potholes on the Pamir Highway?
Yes.
To be clear, this is the highway. With trucks going back and forth. It is not an off road track. 🤯

We’re often asked how we cope with travelling with a dog and whether he’s happy.
If he has space to run (chasing thrown stones), smells to sniff and the sofa to cuddle on, he’s happy.
And if he has a river or lake to run through or swim in, then even more so!

Friends in the desert!
One of the great joys of travelling is meeting other travellers.
Each with their own stories and reasons for travelling.
It took us a while to realise, but in the early days we kept meeting people…and getting on really well with them.
Eventually we realised that people that travel all have similar mind sets, drives and desires, so it stands to reason we’d get on well. And continued meetings reaffirms this.
The hardest part of meeting people? Saying goodbye to people you’ve only known briefly but have a connection with, knowing you may not see them again.

On the move today - the three vehicles were all heading off today in different directions, but we decided to convoy out through the high altitude desert together before heading our separate ways.
Australian. Toyota Troopy in the lead, Canadian Toyota Tundra in the middle and us with Bebe following on behind.
Made for quite a fun sight as we travelled down the track.

Last nights lunar eclipse blood moon, from 4300m up in Tajikistan. Just about 10mins before totality.
The biggest downside? It was about -4degC so as soon as it hit totality, we all went to bed!

Tajikistan isn’t the best for diesel outside the main cities, and the quality is apparently “questionable”, so we filled with enough to get us through to Dushanbe (the capital) where there is good diesel available.
The other ‘stans haven’t been a problem at all, especially Kazakhstan where it’s very cheap!

Not especially. I was baking in an Omnia Oven on our outdoor gas stove, so it’s a slow, low temp process anyway. But it was just about 50mins.

Fresh baked bread at 4300m.
With the birthday to celebrate yesterday for one of our travelling companions, I cracked out my (non-existent) baking skills and rustled up this Garlic and Rosemary bread for lunch.
Certainly made for a unique setting for fresh bread.
And yes, we then settled down for some lunar watching with the blood moon and eclipse giving us a great show… just a shame it was about -2 outside by the time it got to totality!

It doesn’t happen very often, but today we’d decided to stay put with the friends we’ve been in convoy with for the last week or so.
Then by chance we dropped a message to another couple who we knew were in Tajikistan and it turns out they were less than 100km away. So they came over to meet us! They’re Canadian and this is the 6th country we’ve met them in since early last year - Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Georgia and now Tajikistan. Quite amazing since we’ve taken totally different routes!
Finally a Belgian guy on a bike came by and although he thought about continuing on, the spectre of fresh bread baking and a BBQ this evening proved too much of a draw. Also, he’s a baker by trade and since there’s a birthday in the group today, he’s baked a cake!
So four overland vehicles at 4300m camped up on a high altitude plateau surrounded by mountains. Perfect.
This is overlanding. The people you meet and stories you hear.

Tajikistan 🤯
Yesterday we had a bit of a moment. A slide slope nearly collected us as we slipped off the track, buried in the left hand side and got very close to rolling. Again.
More on that later.
But today was much better! Glorious scenery, great light and now parked up at a high altitude dried lake plateau at 4300m surrounded by towering peaks.
Travel fact: Tajikistan is a mountainous, landlocked country of around 10million people. The average height of the country is 3186m with mountains covering a little over 90% of the land.

They’re an NZ/French couple with a little boy. Online handles are “theoutfit” or “the.out.fit”
The car is an old Volvo that they’ve converted and just done an engine swap in from petrol to diesel.
Sadly not on Nostr, though I’m going to work on changing that!

It’s the first day of school for many in the UK, and since Isla is 4 she’d be going in to reception class.
Just because she lives in a truck travelling the world doesn’t mean she should miss out on this milestone, so this is here “first day of school” pictures in front of her home, in the Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan.
Lessons today have been…
- paddling in a mountain stream (water safety)
- a walk in the mountains (mountain safety/PE)
- rock collecting (geology)
- where we are in the world (geography)
…and some phonics and numbers on Reading Eggs and Khan Academy.

That sprinter has made it along the Pamir with nothing more than a broken AC compressor!
The Land Cruiser has come from Australia and is a lovely Toyota Troopy (they’re epic!) and the green and grey is going well having made it along the Pamir too, but currently has a couple of broken leaf springs from a pothole hit too fast!

It’s actually a really good drone. But only if you need FPV.
It misses some of the control if you use the Motion Controller, but the trade off is that it is seriously easy to fly.

Hahaha we have an Avata 2 and she’s had a go on it back in Albania, but it’s back in the UK now as we didn’t want to lose it going through Russia.
I do miss having it though - such a dynamic way of content creation beyond what’s possible with a normal drone.

Since we were parked literally in the middle of nowhere (we didn’t see or hear anything or anyone for 48hrs) I decided it was time for Jess to have a drone flying lesson.
I’m the drone pilot, but also the more extreme off road driver, so I want to get Jess flying the drone too, so it’s not all on me.
3minutes in to her first flight…
“how the f*** do you do this while we’re bouncing down the road in a moving truck and still keep the moving truck in the frame? 🤯”
I’ll take that as a compliment that it’s not as easy as it looks 🤣
Will have to get her more practice.
