Took me longer than it should have to realize that when some people say “overpopulation” they mean something like “people alive because of the application technology” or perhaps “people sustained by processes that currently rely on non-renewable resources.”
I had someone yell at me, in response to my “overpopulation rhetoric is fascist” post, that I just couldn’t see that we’re “chained to the Haber-Bosch process” and it took me the longest time to figure out where that came from.

God I hate the word “collective.” It’s laden with so much baggage, an implicit idea of a group of people acting as a unitary organism without dissent.
People should be free to reach *cooperative and voluntary* agreements with whomever they please. When free, people can and do strive to reach consensus agreements with other people in their community, which produce all kinds of benefits.
But there is not and cannot be some “collective” actor that supersedes the individual.

I’ve seen one estimate that the total global spending on militaries is $2.44 trillion. I can’t find a good estimate for total global spending on policing, but it’s probably at least another few hundred billion dollars.

In Sudan, popular protests in 2019 drove the military to stage a coup against the dictator Omar al-Bashir. The military shared power with a transitional civilian government but overthrew them in 2021. Then, in 2023, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces attempted a coup against the military, starting a civil war that is still ongoing and has absolutely destroyed that country.

In Chad, Idriss Déby Itno had ruled since he overthrew the previous government in 1991. But, in 2021, Déby was killed in battle against rebels in Chad’s north. His son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, assumed power and has ruled tenuously since then.
