Reading this thread just reaffirms the unfortunate truth that there is no FOSS / federated platform that is ready to challenge Discord. My attempts to use Element and Element X were highly disappointing and buggy.
Unfortunately for me that means I'm staying away from all of it for now.

thank you for explaining the "app has unexpected permissions" dialog that appears when using F-Droid on GOS.
I do appreciate the breadth of material available on F-Droid, and to a novice, the way the repositories appear to work seems to be a plus. I'm sorry to hear that members of their team haven't been supportive of GOS - that's a missed opportunity right there!

Is there a link to an article detailing these changes? I'm not surprised in the slightest that Google is going further down the proprietary enshittification wormhole, but I'd like to know exactly what changes are in the way.
