Yup. And lose us the next election to Reform. Corbyn all over again. I love Zack, but I don't want him to win. I'd like Starmer to be greener, but can't be doing with populism - it can't deal with the real, dirty political world.

I like much of what Polanski stands for, and love how well he makes the case for green policies. But I've been told he wants the UK to pull out of NATO, and for us to scrap all nuclear arms development. It sounds attractive but I'm not sure it's realistic. Are all Polanski fans on board with this approach?

I'm keen on Polanski, but disagree with him on this. Labour seem to me to be addressing an accepted concern with a civilized approach. I think the concern is misplaced, but it can't be denied. It is best dealt with by de-escalating the rhetoric, so managed immigration can continue and people will get used to it as just normal, and not a major threat.

You could see it the other way round. Most 'working people' (me included) couldn't begin to run a government department. They might understand the poor, but would they know what levers to pull to help them? Could they manage a budget of millions? Rayner is rare because she can do both - she courageously attempts to support the poor in a system rigged against working class women like her. She's a rare MP, who bridges both worlds, and certainly gets my support.

Good for Lush. Encouraging us to think about Gaza. It's probably more important than getting our bath products exactly when we want them. Thank goodness not everyone acts according to their balance sheet.

I'm not one for beating anything out of anyone. Persistent persuasion is more my way. And I try to practice what I preach. Each to their own. At least we both agree that paper can be environmentally friendly, and that tech is not necessarily the answer to the planet's problems.

I agree. I'm a great believer in campaigning, protesting, and pestering big business. Also in supporting politicians who support the right causes. Some of them are brilliant, others are well intentioned but need pushing. I still know that I take more notice of those who are making difficult choices in their private lives as well.

Are you saying that it's all everyone else's fault? Pushing away responsibility for anything? If so, I'm not with you. If nothing else, we should at least lead by example, use our buying power to influence businesses, support green campaigns, keep manufacturers aware of our concerns.

I'm not sure it's the paper that's the problem. It's the printing ink and the bookbinding glue, among other things. It's the responsibility of all manufacturers to ensure their product doesn't poison the planet. And we should all reduce waste where we can.

Now who's being unrealistic!? I just buy normal paperbacks. Read them and thumb them and move house with them. After many years they get yellow and brittle, and some go out of date. They get very tatty. I've no idea how to preserve them. I agree that good paper is a great medium. I just wish publishers would focus more on finding an environment friendly means of production.

I love to buy books. I also worry about disposing of them when they're old and tatty. Noone wants them, so I can't give them away, and apparently they're toxic and indestructible in landfill sites. I don't think it's evil to produce them, but I do wish someone would find a way to make them more environment friendly.

Noone seems to be asking what the effect of this will be in the US. If their trade with EU reduces, I can't imagine it will help them. Trump's notion that their productivity will go up seems deluded. It was pretty high under Biden, but Joe wasn't kicking the most productive members of the labour force out of the country.

Pushing for change I like. Bashing basically decent people for not being good enough I don't like. I prefer to encourage them to be better, not slag them off. But maybe we do need outliers to do some shouting ... and perhaps that's your role.

Your Labour bashing is very depressing. They have to deal with a conservative press, slow machinery of state, and a public that's suspicious of lefties. They're new to the job. They mostly come from modest homes so at least vaguely understand real life. Let's encourage the good stuff they do, push for change, and be grateful they're prepared to take the pressure and threats. Most of us just lie low.

I try to give him benefit of doubt. No point in just aiming for change, if you've no power. If Starmer stays in we also get Rayner and Milliband voice heard. And since (with media help) many voters see immigration as a problem, democrats have to listen to them. I campaign hard for climate, but back Starmer as PM. I don't want Farage or Jenrick to win through a single wasted vote!

Good to see a sane comment about this. The BBC is reporting the US proposal as if it had some kind of merit. I wish politicians had the freedom to speak like normal people, and respond to this idiocy with the disdain it deserves. It would be better for my mental health.

My brain is already working on how we might all adapt to this US madness. We'll certainly need to be agile, to adjust our political allegiances, and not squabble over petty stuff. Unfortunately I've lost all faith in my own judgement. I was foolishly predicting a blue wave ....

Give them a chance! Think it through! Pensioners were cosseted by the Tories at the expense of others. Triple lock pensions. Many own houses whose value rose hugely under Tories. The fuel allowance came in to balance tiny pensions of the time, and now the balance has changed. Labour need to sell the policy better, but we need to use our brains and rejoice that the wretched Tories are out.
