Sometimes I have weird connectivity issues where speeds to servers outside Mexico drop to near dialup speeds in the middle of the night. The farther away geographically, the worse it is. It's only happend a handful of times but was quite annoying. I suspect that my ISP is just being cheap and not paying for enough transit, or perhaps they decide to YOLO some router maintenance without hot spares.

That's what most of my jobs were. I was the dev getting rushed to ship everything out asap. It was shit code, but it got out there fast, sometimes even the same day.
What's not useful are tards who can barely code and only know how to cobble React plugins. The *reason* they're not useful is because they're slow, and hiring a swarm of them doesn't make them any faster, it just creates a much larger amount of shit at the slow pace.

Everything you hear is a lie in some form, but that should have been obvious from the fact that it came from the media.
It's pretty chill here. I live in a big city and there's very little crime by American standards. The cops don't let bums cause trouble. The cartels don't bother you if you don't bother them, so long as you don't live in some shithole village in the middle of nowhere. (You wouldn't live on the south side of Chicago either...)
Mostly people go to work, go to the market and drink caguamas (40's) with their friends. Everyone everywhere in all of history always thinks the economy is bad and prices are high, but things are going ok here. There are "help wanted" signs all over the place, and they list livable wages. Housing is cheap, if not luxurious, but better to live in a crappy house and have beer money than live in a fancy house and work 60 hours a week to keep above water. There are tons of laws, but nobody really cares, even the government enforcers, so in practice there is a lot more freedom than in the US; lots of normal people run a small business of some sort, and profitably, and without debt.
The most striking thing coming from the US is that the people are warm and nice and the streets and shopping districts aren't dead. You can just go hang out at the market or even at the taco stand on the corner and chat with people, for hours. I've even had strangers give me free beer while hanging out listening to live street music in the middle of the night on like a Tuesday.

In 2019 I spent about $3000 bumming around Thailand and Vietnam for two months, not including plane tickets, but also not really being economical about things. $1500/mo (for two) is pretty cheap when you're not paying rent in the US. Sell all your shit, cancel all your subscriptions, and live on ramen for a couple months and you should be able to save up ~$6k or so, especially if you can guilt your loser parents into letting you crash on their couch while you save up. (Might as well get your inheritance in some form or another.)
We met a British couple in Thailand who had been just bumming around the world for the past few years, working little odd jobs here and there under the table to get by. The language schools in Vietnam would pay native English speakers to just come hang out and chat with their students for a few hours. Nearby here in a big city in Mexico there's a place that rents rooms (private room, shared bathroom, like a college dorm) for $80/mo. It's run down, but it's safe and it's *cheap* and located a few blocks from the cool parts of town. The US is a big money trap, and it's hard to see how cheap and easy life can potentially be while living inside it.

They'll also never go for eliminating 95% of the regulations on the books at all levels of government (including zoning, building codes, mandatory unionization, and professional licensing), nor will they tolerate a working underclass that lives in literal shantytowns (lest they might become a denizen themselves, a very real possibility for people who never developed any useful skills).

No, the *weekly* ones are a few seconds usually. I think the wires sag in the heat or blow in the wind and get shorted on a tree or nearby wire, shorting out my local (a couple blocks) 23kv->120v transformer for a moment. You can often hear the little explosion of whatever it was getting vaporized by 5000 amps.
Longer blackouts happen much less often, maybe 4 or 5 times a year, and *usually* are less than 12 hours. It's ridiculous to happen in 2025, but then again when I lived in Seattle there would be week-long blackouts for entire neighborhoods because a couple trees fell over in a wind storm.

I am curious as to the actual situation on the ground in Russia. On paper, they have a lot of red tape, just like the US and Europe, but they're also a country that seems to have readily available petty corruption, and a sort of zero-fucks-given attitude towards many things. It's entirely possible that a homestead in the Russian wilderness is incredibly free in practice.

No, I don't think other countries will respond by glassing the planet, and the few small countries crazy enough to do it only have a handful of nukes and no good way to deliver them.
There have been a couple of times where the order to MAD was given, whether in error or as a secret test, and the men at the silos refused to push the button.
If someone does use a nuke, it'll either be Israel out of some petty spite over some petty ancient goatherder feud with their neighbors, or it'll be the US trying to relive the glory days back when their military was effective. And at most there will be a small, measured response, and that'll be the end of it. Most likely no nuclear response at all, rather global condemnation and conventional war.

Just a technical point here, but the fancy new ones are hypersonic glide vehicles, not ballistic missiles. They are only ballistic during a short initial phase, mostly over friendly territory, where they do a nose-dive from the edge of space in order to gain speed before pulling up at mach 12 and then flying comparatively level towards the final target.
No interceptor missile will be any good, as their speed is not practical to achieve with direct rocket power, and they're moving so fast that head-on interception is nearly impossible to time correctly.

It's a weird place for sure, and land was going for $80k+/5 acres back in 2017 when I was looking. Also, it's a lot farther from civilization than many people understand. That's the sort of shit that is easy to do but can't just be copypasted from Stack Overflow; chatbots can't sit in a meeting and make middle managers feel important.
After all, there are already a million CMS's and sitebuilder tools that work perfectly fine for 98.5% of basic websites.

Real feudalism formed over the course of centuries, and had responsibilities in both directions. Monty Python's "I didn't vote for a king" segment is a lot closer to historical reality than people think. Trying to put a large portion of your population out of work over the course of only a few years will absolutely result in riots; industrialization happened over the course of two hundred years and there was no shortage of violence from people who are now obsolete and need to learn how to factory or whatever.
Fortunately, it looks like chatbots will take the jobs of journalists, call center workers, Hollywood writers, and two-bit furry porn artists and not much else.

All the history you've been told is a fucking lie.
The steam engine was invented by William Murdoch and Richard Trevithick just before 1800. They were harassed and hampered by a piece-of-shit patent troll named James Watt who was actively trying to suppress the development of a steam engine while promoting his own barely-functional contraption which was a minor improvement over the one that Thomas Newcomen ripped off of Denis Papin (a true genius) and patented without any credit or compensation. Similar to Edison, Watt would go around claiming that real steam engines were dAnGeRoUs and should be banned. Between Watt and Newcomen, humanity was likely set back decades by patent trolling.
Those machines prior to Murdoch and Trevithick weren't powered by steam expansion and were closer in form to a terrible sterling engine; they wouldn't be considered "steam engines" by the modern definition of the word, and were so weak that they couldn't even function at all at high altitude, much less power a locomotive at sea level. They also couldn't run at a consistent speed, which prevented them from being used for factories. Instead, factories used them to pump water (their only real use, and even then only barely) into a reservoir which then fed a *water wheel*.
