In today's sword news, functional fantasy is in vogue. The Chinese circuit has finally keyed in that people want swords from the lord of the rings bit I'm steels that aren't shit and constructed and move like actual swords. They've been phasing these in for the last year or so, but are now going all in these last few months with the big name brand Chinese companies putting them out under their own product lines instead of for limited runs for western importers

Around the beginning of the renaissance was an expansion on who it was socially acceptable for to be seen Carrying a sword outside of war. Before then, in most places, almost everyone besides landed knights and nobles only carried knives in town. (Ownership in general wasn't as strict in most places as generally thought in pop culture. As in most places the levy and town militia had to bring their own weapons to muster, But carrying in daily life was a different thing entirely)
But during the renaissance, now there was a big influx of merchants, burghers, more wealthy farmers. Etc. carrying swords daily. And with that came an explosion of sword schools to teach these classes.
Before the 1400s, the crossguard didn't see much development because the people who used swords had gauntlets generally. Tbat's better hand protection than a guard could ever be. But nobody wears gauntlets in civilian life.
In civilian life, the hand is vulnerable no matter what. Even today, people get **really** mad at hand sniping because it's such a quick way to win a bout. And sword styles started skewing towards the thrust in both spheres of civil and military use. People found that maximizing point control is really good. And that's when people started putting fingers over the guard. Which lead to people developing the hilts. Somewhere in the 1500s, hilts got complex enough and so many troops started using guns, metal gauntlets in general disappeared outside of fully armored cavalry using lances and such.

Yes, and? The swept and cup hilts came after something like 150 years of development. And it started with someone putting a ring over the guard. It's no more dangerous than a regular cross guard, because a cross guard is dog shit for protecting hands without gauntlets anyway.

Well, yes, that's why complex hilts exist. People started putting fingers over the guard because tip control is great. Then they started adding rings and cups to protect the fingers

Did dome heavy use tests with the buck 120. I normally don't like batoning. But I wanted to see how robust the edge was. So I put it through a 3 inch round. It was only ok as a wedge, it's a pretty Ishtar knife. But the edge didn't roll or chip, so that's very promising.
