I know I post a lot, and maybe too much, about how impactful the social web is, and how we need to ensure we remain true to our goals of open, accessible and ethical projects.

I built my first social network in 2005, when I was in high school, using BoonEx Dolphin.
I also paid for my hosting by selling plugins and themes.
20+ years later, I can now write my own platforms from scratch.
And I'm so glad we're no longer using flash for video. That was a different time 😅

Proxmox is amazing, and I've spent the day setting up the new dedicated server that will soon power a dozen fediverse platforms, sites and services.
DigitalOcean was easy, but expensive, and I've been subsidizing hosting costs when we could have moved to a dedicated server earlier.
But when you wear many hats, you need to adapt.

Unlike most ActivityPub implementations, we do not expose activities in the outbox, or followers/following in the collections.
We also limit anon pagination in follower/following lists on the web, and limit other anon endpoints to prevent crawler abuse.
We make just the right amount of data public, and for the full experience, you need to be logged in.
There are no dark patterns, just a focus on user and data privacy.

Loops Admins will be able to define keywords (like spam domains) that will be checked to reject local + remote Direct Message delivery in the DM pipeline.

I'm rebuilding the Pixelfed mobile app from scratch to leverage a cleaner and more maintainable UI, using native UI components on Android and iOS.
This isn't only about performance, making the app less complex and easier to use and with improved caching and backend error handling will drastically improve the UX.

I think you're doing more harm than good, there are few ethical funding platforms like them, and we shouldn't be so quick to assume the worst, after seeing they are looking for non-us alternatives.

AI and vibe coding is pretty controversial, but in certain contexts, I think it's pretty amazing to consider that it represents a diverse demographic of people (of all ages) that did not possess the skills to build a website, app, service or company without these historic new technological advancements.
Yeah, they may not be the most accessible or secure projects, but just the fact that anyone can learn to code much easier, is something to celebrate.

I didn't start Pixelfed to become rich or famous.
I started it because I wanted to prove that I could be a real web dev/programmer by taking a chance and starting my first full stack open source project.
7 years later, I'm so proud I took that step and left my automotive tech career behind to become a self taught developer.

You need balance as a fediverse developer, being able to respond constructively to comments like this can really make or break your reputation.

How is an AR filter harmful, when you don't need to even finish uploading the video to Loops, you can literally record a video then save it and share it to a specific person outside of Loops.
It's not that different from editing a photo and sharing it. That happens a lot. Where is the harm?

I'd rather work a non-fediverse full time job than sell out, despite knowing first hand what poverty feels like.
I could've taken up any one of those VC sharks up on an offer to fund or sell Pixelfed, but I couldn't live with myself if I did.
That being said, I am looking into sustainable long-term ethical monetization to enable me to work full time, and even grow a team, without sacrificing our core tenets of building ethical alternatives.
This means so much to me, I want to keep building...

I owe so much to @npub1n8y…l96n for funding Pixelfed as their first fediverse project back in 2019.
I would've been homeless if it wasn't for them, and expediting my first milestone RFP.
A year ago we exploded and had to scale up, it was expensive, and that is where a large part of our Kickstarter funds were spent.
I'm now looking at dedicated hosting to reduce costs significantly, as it's not sustainable.
I hate to ask, but we could use more support:

Thanks, but I should also mention that a few of those signatories have active Loops accounts, and that repo was archived, so it doesn't accurately represent the current state, not to mention that I have since re-invited Hazel to our team and fully open sourced Loops.

Yeah, I've made mistakes. Real ones. I own that.
What I also own: 8 years of open fediverse work, fully open sourcing Loops, and doing the hard work of making things right with people I hurt.
I'm embarrassed by who I was then. I'm proud of who I'm becoming.

Starting to see Loops spam accounts, and will be prioritizing a new MRF type system in Loops to help automate detection and classification.
Spam sucks, and from my experience with Pixelfed, we need to address this sooner rather than later.

Jack Dorsey had the chance to build on ActivityPub in 2019, chose to invent a whole new protocol instead, watched it become the exact kind of VC-funded corporate platform he said he didn't want, left the board, and is now funding Nostr.
ATProto doesn't care about what they can't control, or they would use ActivityPub, period.

not throwing stones, just spittin facts. To much glazing over AtProto when many seem to forget its history, so I feel a duty to remind people of this.
ATProto never cared about openness or the social web, or they would have adopted ActivityPub and helped improve it.
They had to control everything. Jack even said he regrets that himself.

Jack Dorsey skipped ActivityPub, built AtProto, lost Twitter, funded Bluesky, watched it become a company with VCs and a board, said it was "repeating all the mistakes," left, and now funds Nostr.
The fediverse is the only one in this story that never needed a billionaire to survive.

Attention to detail and polish before shipping has really paid off, especially considering how harsh I was treated before publishing the source code.

Pixelfed has had comment controls since 2019, and Loops just shipped "Hide comments" support, but I agree we can do more, I'm working on extensive comment controls for both Pixelfed and Loops.
