One of my guilty pleasure was, from time to time, to go to hacker news and read random heavily upvoted links.
Those are always easy read, sometimes interesting, sometimes not.
A couple of weeks ago, I did it but nearly all links where about "how I use LLMs to be more productive". The word "Claude" was 17 times on the front page. I could not find one single link I wanted to follow. They were all the same emptyness non-sense.
I was so disgusted, I’ve never visited HN again since that day.

Advice for people on the #smolnet.
I’ve seen far too many people complaining they have no feedback about their writing but I simply cannot reach them!
- Put an email contact in an obvious place. Too often, it feels like a quest to find your email.
- Be sure that your email works. No, seriously. I’ve several cases of server returning an error.
- If you don’t want to receive emails, write it explicitely so I don’t spend my time looking for your address.

I believe that all the programmers who like "vibe-coding" simply have not been exposed enough to a real-world messy codebase.
I remember when banks were writing Java software to encapsulate their Cobol legacy software without touching them, thinking it was the best way to deal with such radioactive codebase.
I’m sure some are already working on "containing" vibecoded stacks that "just work if you don’t sneeze too hard next to them" and are in production.

Like @npub1dnd…hzjs , I’ve only been realizing very late that extremely rich people are necessarily crazy.
https://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2026/02/more-in-sadness-than-in-anger.html
It’s logical: non-crazy people will, at some point, hit the "more money than enough even for my craziest fullfilling dreams".
People who are still destroying their social/ecological environment for more money above that level are, obviously, crazy. And dangerous.

If this new chatbot is so efficient, why do you need to force your employees to use it? Why do you need to advertise the fact that you are using it? Are you that insecure?
If I truly had a powerful tool, I would not talk about it. I would only show it to my employees, asking them to not tell the competition about it. And I will let the employees discover by themselves how efficient it is by giving bonuses to the most efficient.

Idea: "The unbillionaires list", to promote contributors to the common.
A collaborative website that lists people who created something useful to millions but purposedly choose to put in in the common and didn’t earn money directly from it (or not as much as expected)
Besides those listed in https://ploum.net/2026-01-22-why-no-european-google.html

Dear politicians,
The problem is not that I disagree with you.
The problem is that your only job is, by definition, to protect the common good. But big corporations managed to brainwash you into thinking that there’s no such thing as the common good.
You are not yet on the level we can disagree with. You are not even on a level we can discuss with. You are a child playing the "elect me game" to distract our attention.
And it works.
That makes me sad…

I ask my students to contribute to the opensource project of their choice.
I just did a quick grep through the 238 projects I have in my archives.
Of 238, 7 don’t mention "github.com".
On close inspection, 6 of them are because the student forgot to putt the URL of the project repo.
So, on 238 students, only one managed to contribute to a project which is not hosted on Github.
It is even worse than I thought.

Unix - BSD developers : this code should run and be maintained as long as computers exist.
Linux - GNU dev : this code should run and be maintained as long as someone is willing to do the work
Consultant: this code should run until the end of my contract.
Enterprise grade B2B software : this code should run till the end of the demonstration to that big customer.
Vibe coding : You are perfectly right. The code doesn’t run. Try this one. You are right, it deleted your hard disk, I’m sorry.

2025-11-26 10:37:25 UTC

In computer security, it is said that the fact you don’t see any vulnerability in the code you write is no proof that your code is secure. It is proof that you are blind to all the mistakes you did in your shitty code.
People *will* exploit your vulnerabilities.
I’m a writer.
When you use a LLM to generate text, the fact that you find the output good doesn’t mean that it is good. It only means that you are blind to the shit you’ve generated.
People *will notice* how stupid your writing is.

You don’t make yourself and the world better by going into nazi bars and pay drinks to convince people to leave.
You build a better world by actually building and maintaining a friendlier place, making sure it stays open and welcome everyone. It doesn’t need to have a lot of people. It doesn’t need "everybody". It just need to be there with a "welcome" sign on the door.

The point is not to replace your job with an AI.
The point is to make you afraid of losing your job so you accept worse working conditions.
This is "job terrorism".

Every expert in the world seems to agree that AI will have no meaningful impact on their own line of work but that experts from other fields will eventually be entirely replaced.

Github telling me that I can now use Copilot is a reminder that you, yes you the free software developers with a project on Github, are the one preventing me to delete my account.
Seriously. Get your public projects out of Github.

: well, for them, it’s true.
I’ve seen influencers, deeply brainwashed by 15 years of Twitter, try to use Mastodon.
They create an account. They post a few click bait headline ("You would not believe what happens if you click here") then they complain that:
1. They have not immediately as much as followers as their old account.
2. They have too many "critical reactions" and that creates a bad atmosphere.

It could even be defaulted to the current behaviour so most users would not see a difference.

Mastodon is decentralized developed by volunteers and a handful of people paid by donations. The goal is, like the web, to create a common infrastructure (the Fediverse) that will have no leader and will outlive all of us (like the Web).
Bluesky promises to be decentralized (some day) but is not and is funded by VC. The goal is to make them do a good return on their money sooner or later.
Think about it next time you read something like "feature X is a bit better on Bluesky"

Today in class, I taught my students about decentralized networks, I told them about the XMPP/Google story (see link) and ended with a demonstration of the #fediverse with Mastodon and Peertube.
They are Computer Grad students. They never heard about Mastodon.
I hope some of them will be curious enough to join and that you will warmly welcome them!

The best way to help those who are or will be under a dangerous political regime is to normalize the tools that protect them.
If you use Whatsapp, try to replace as many conversations as you can with Signal.
If you use Gmail or Outlook, switch to an independent privacy preserving provider, at least for your personal emails.
If you use Chrome, switch to Firefox.
By making those tools "normal", you are making them look less suspicious.
If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others.

I’m really happy that @npub1fdr…lvhs is talking about RSS. We need more RSS.
In my own case, I just like to say that I don’t even try to read the main page of blogs and news websites.
I simply open the RSS feed with #offpunk to see the latest posts.
For nerds like me, you RSS feed *is* the real homepage of your website.

Stop putting QR code on your posters in the city.
I don’t have my phone with me.
When I have it, I don’t want to open it.
When it is open, I don’t want to scan random stuff.
Just put the information on the posters. The date, the place, the price. Write them !
Add an URL to your website. One I could memorize, note down or even recognize later.
And no instagram/facebook. I want the information, not "follow".
You are not cool, you are simply losing a huge part of your potential audience.

Is there any science-fiction Dutch-speaking publisher that would be interested by a collaboration with @npub1ynh…l5ee my Swiss publisher ?
As a Belgian, I would really love to see a Dutch translation of the book.
Please spread the word ! (publishers in any other languages are, of course, more than welcome. The book is under a Creative Commons By-SA license)

The Fediverse allows you to reach real people who care.
Commercial social network allows you to get (fake) vanity metrics against money.
When a person, an institution or a company tells you that "Mastodon is not working" or "There are not enough people on Mastodon", what they are truly saying is what they are looking for.
And is not to reach real people who care.

#Mozilla has announced that they are closing their Mastodon instance.
But at least, they are hiring a lot, which is nice.
Like:
- Machine Learning Engineer, Gen AI
- Principal Product Manager, Generative AI
- Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Gen AI
- …
Wait, are they hiring for something else than AI ?
Glad you asked:
- Senior Staff Software Engineer, Ads
- Client Analytics Manager
- Product Policy Manager, Ads

Mais tout est bien qui finit bien. On va revenir aux fondamentaux : casser du pédé en traitant les pauvres d’assistés.
