I kinda highly resent that of all the scales in the world the Western tradition settled on the 7-note diatonic though, with the result that piano keys are laid out to privilege it, with the results that all music education starts from walking up and down this scale. what a bad-sounding scale. if we have to use a 7-note scale at least pick the mixolydian mode or something

like it's satisfying even these simple exercises when you finally nail one little thing and convert printed page to some sort of music, rhythm and all. even more since I realised I can do the rhythm on the pandeiro first to make sure I have a feel for it, before trying to play the notes.

like I still don't know how chord progressions work or why they sound good, but once you understand what's a chord and how that translates to finger movements (quite trivial if you're in the same key/scale type as the flute—for anything in C major / A minor on the 8-hon, I just have to add or remove two fingers at a time to go from i to iii to v, for example)—then at a minimum, you just fool around with the notes of each chord at the appropriate phrases in the chord progression?
it's still black magic to me how the hell people can tell the key or chord progressions of a song by ear, but if I'm getting this correctly, for every pop/rock/OST song that I can find the guitar chords for online, all I have to do to interact with the song with my flute is to stay within the notes of each chord in each passage, and that will feel like music? that works?

I don't like frozen food very much due to the dependency on stable electricy supply, electricity prices, and space required. but if those things aren't a big deal in your situation, yeah, you can get big chest freezers for cheap when they're used and in a basement where the noise doesn't bother anyone you can store lots of expensive items.

lots of people were never taught how to do a pantry. I learned it very late. this isn't like, apocalypse nuts, if you come from a working-class family your mom probably did something like that to make ends meet.
1. whenever you do groceries, buy a bit more of non-perishable items than you normally do. say your family normally goes over a 5kg bag of rice per month. the bag is running out. instead of buying 1 bag for next month, buy 2 or 3. same for tomato sauce, pasta, pickles, cleaning products—whatever it is that you know you definitely use, and that lasts a long time without a fridge. if you normally buy 4 boxes of it and consume them all, start buying 5.
2. when groceries arrive, you'll sort them out by rotation. bring the old items to the front/top, and put the new ones at the back/bottom. this becomes automatic quick.
3. adjust as you go by rates of use, durability, and space available. if you thought you were building a stock of pickles but the pantry has no pickles, buy more jars every time. if you somehow accumulated 20 bottles of oil and the bottles are guaranteed for two years and you use less than one a month, stop buying oil for a while.
how much extra you stock is up to you. you don't need to have shelf after shelf of food to last ten years, this can just look like having an extra bag or two of everything at the back of the cabinet, which is really useful if you get sick and can't go out, or situations like that. I think everyone should have at least 2 weeks of essential ingredients (and water—not crucial for money-saving in most countries but very crucial for emergencies).
extra tips:
- mind your local little animals who might appear to partake of the food without invitation. if you live somewhere with rats or cockroaches, you might need something like big buckets with lids, or other tightly closed containers. pantry moths are less bad but some of them can dig through plastic bags. it's useful to stock up on glass jars from pickles and whatnot to secure especially targeted treats inside. it's useful to buy extra-large jars to reuse them for this purpose.
- in my house there's a distinction between food ready at hand (up in the flat at the kitchen) and reserves in the apocalypse bunker (actually a couple 20€ metal shelves in our basement). this is a bit of a bother (it's easy to forget about the reserves) but it's done for space reasons, and also to keep the pantry moths away from the larger stocks, which so far we have succeeded in doing.
- also mind local conditions of heat and humidity; food degrade faster if either is high, especially if both.
- pay attention to quantity discounts. supermarkets often sell things cheaper if you buy them in bulk, and your country might have special discount supermarkets specialised in selling whole boxes of things. you do need to look it up whether the discount is actually a discount or a "discount" in name only, though.
- you can save money by learning to do canning and other food preservation, buying lots of vegetables and fruit when they're in season and discounted for starting to go bad, and processing them into jars (jams, sauces, pickles etc.). but this takes significant amounts of labour, and can be dangerous; please inform yourself how to do it properly. (basically it's easy to do jams and acidic stuff like pickles; things that are neither sugary nor very sour carry a risk of botulism; the risk is very low but the condition very scary.)

it's a fair bet that the prices of everything will go up in the near future. it's also a fair bet that your salary won't follow suit.
therefore if you have money to spend, now's a great time to invest into tangible things, as long as you're sure it's things you'll actually want to buy even in a crisis. canned food, yes, groceries prices always go up. but also if you've been planning some big expense, say a move to a new apartment or a new fridge or a privately paid surgery, etc., it's probably more cost-effective to do it now than it will be later. your saved money will be able to acquire less things in the future than now.
I'm not saying burn through your savings, of course. savings are still really useful in emergencies, if you get fired and so on, which is also more likely to happen than it was before. I just think if you believe you have money left over to spend while still maintaining reasonable savings, I think it's a good bet to convert some of that money into non-perishable goods and services for the future.
(I studied Japanese tonal dialectology not personal finances, there's no reason to trust my opinion more than anybody else's)

shakuhachi: impossible dream. I love honkyoku but it's a mirage beyond my reach. I blow it every so often just to get humble. real musicians consider it maddeningly difficult. can't bend notes for my life. maybe if I found an actual teacher, but in Germany it's hopeless.
nohkan: dream. best flute. I love this thing so much. it's the shinobue but spooky. the only reason I don't play this instead of the shino is I can't justify the investment. if at any point I judge myself decent enough at shinobue to call myselves a "shinobue player", I'm buying one. if I ever move back to Japan or Brazil I'm joining a hayashi ensemble immediately, assuming they'd have me at all.
ryūteki: shinobue but posh. nah.
Western flute, oboe, clarinet et al: nah. too clean, too neat, too chromatic, too Western.
recorder: like a shinobue but they made it easy to play by removing all the good parts. hard no.
harmonica: I feel like this instrument sounds amazing if you're really good and like ass if you're just ok and I would never go beyond the "just ok" stage.
ocarina?? kind of a vibe but I feel like it would get old fast, doesn't feel as, I don't know how to put it. bendable? creatively expressive as the harmonica or shino.
panpipes?? I only know those from those Peruvian street performers, which invariably tend to perform with backing tracks, so they're probably also boring by themselves? the timbre is fun, though. somehow I feel like you'd need like a whole set of these to play with.

didgeridoo: amazing instrument, 10/10 top instrument, would 100% learn to play this if I had just a bit more time and money. I feel like the way to blow this is probably 100% unrelated to any other blowy things and one has to approach it from zero but once you get the hang of the circular breathing it's more percussion than a flute?
I think the general trend is that I'm attracted to instruments that I feel too intimidated to play. this applies to other families too, e.g. me being more interested in the shamisen than guitar.

my advice is to, off-character, first talk with your date about it, and explicitly state that, for example, if you're not feeling well for whatever reason you can leave the club at any moment, etc. being vulnerable around your subs make them trust you more not less, which in turn increases the depths of kink you can reach, rather than decrease. don't try to stay on character at all times.

someone asked me "what's the problem with NHST exactly?", thereby activating the neurons of my standard rant against NHST:
Null hypothesis significance testing was never intended to be a way to "prove" a scientific hypothesis against a zero hypothesis (or, as Gelman calls it, a "strawman hypothesis"). Its adoption as such by the social and medical sciences was a disaster—statisticians including the guy who invented p-numbers (Fisher) have complained about it the entire time but we didn't give them enough heed, because everyone *wants* a black box formula where you input your data and the computers tells you that your hypothesis is "true" (there isn't and cannot be such a tool). NHST is single-handedly one of the biggest causes of the replication crisis.
For details check out the work of statistician Andrew Gelman (*[Abandon Statistical Significance](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00031305.2018.1527253#abstract )* is a good entry point). If you're in the social/bio/etc. field and you're ever in the position of proposing some research, the best advice I can give is to do your best to lobby the grant agency to *have a statistician* model the statistics. The most reliable statistics IMO is done when a specialist who has lots of field-specific knowledge (e.g. a biologist) cooperates with a statistician who has lots of knowledge about which methods work best for their case. In the absence of that, abstain from "uncertainty laundering", that is, from using magical algorithms to pretend we know more than the world than we actually do; even if it makes harder to publish stuff because the field has settled on a posture of definitive statements in catchy press releases, it's our duty as scientists to make the uncertainty as clear as possible.

I've said before that one of the very few good things generative "AI" may do to the world is accelerating the enshittification cycle so much that it kills stuff that was already terrible and a drain on society (social media; platformization; curation algorithms…). Speaking as a linguist who speaks 4 languages and has read the literature on second language acquisition, it has always been my position that the Duolingo method is useless—it *feels* like you are learning a language, but you can spend infinite hours with it and gold a full tree and you'll still get nowhere, and if you put a fraction of the time in about any other method, including doing pen-and-paper drills with old-fashioned paper-based textbooks, you'd have progressed much faster.
And old-fashioned grammar drills suck, too. It's just that Duolingo *really*, really sucks.
(Methods that work better: 1) Find an intensive "conversation"-type course, or anything that is labelled as "natural" or "immersion" or "storytelling" methods; or get tandem partners; or online coaches such as in italki; failing that, join a conventional language course, the more "intensive" the better; work on these until you absorb basic grammar and vocabulary, focusing on spoken language not writing; 2) Once this bootstrap period is over, start talking to people, watching media, or reading stuf that interests you, in large quantities and every day; do not wait until you're "good" to move into the input stage, start actually using the language for things you wanted it for, as soon as possible, which is sooner than you think; partial comprehension is fine.)
Of course I hope Duolingo dies horribly in a fire after it backstabbed its workers with the "AI memo", but even if it didn't, the world is better off without it.
One lesson we can get from this: Consider that overnight 25% drop in investment, which may well prove to be the coup the grâce. It was not caused by Duo losing users or enshittifying with "AI", but by the opposite: investors mass panicked at the company setting its target revenue too low, as in a mere… 1.22 billion, rather than the 1.26 billion the investors wanted. Now the reason Duolingo is not chasing that higher goal is that they're seeing the writing on the wall, and went into damage control mode: they're pulling down a bit on squeezing their current paying users and trying to improve the experience of the free tier, in an attempt to reverse the bleed and bring in more customers.
In other words, Duolingo tried to slow down the slightest tiny bit on enshittification—3% less cash—and this already got swift punishment from the market gods. With capitalism, there is no long-term thinking: you're expected to provide the richest people on Earth with infinite growth of their ever-increasing profits squeezed from customers paying every month more and more, now and forever, or you'll be taken out and replaced by someone willing to try.

was looking at my bright, artistic, sensitive daughter bringing me tea after we watched the latest seasonal event of Animal Crossing, and thinking that the caregiving relationship already started to shift without even me realising. LaTeX is that kind of thing like the Linux/Unix command-line; it is godawful and has no sense of design whatsoever, no accessibility, horrible tech-centrism and Anglocentrism, etc. etc. but also it's the singleton, the only fleshed out implementation of its entire category of software.
so because for example there's so many advantages of a CLI over a GUI but Linux is the only useable CLI there is, all of the problems of the Linux CLI are assumed to be problems with CLIs in general, and everyone who came to understand the benefits of a CLI has to put up with Linux bullshit to get to use one, and eventually grows used to it. and so the Linux bullshit perpetuates. at some point an entire defensive/self-flagellating culture develops where the more pointless unnecessary bullshit you put up with, the bigger hacker you are.
LaTeX works exactly the same way in the text editing/typesetting world; it can in fact be seen less as a "markup" and more as "telling the computer commands about how to set the text", just like the general CLI is telling the computer commands for the general case.

I found out just today that apparently I was supposed to bring a certified translation of my Brazilian birth certificate so I was dreading the Termin, being pretty sure they'd reject the application on these grounds, but no, the clerk accepted my untranslated certificate without a hitch. they were quite nice to me, all in all, just like the Bürgerbüro, which is still something that makes me feel weird and paranoid after years of dealing with Ausländerbehörde treatment.
now I have a whole other pile of paperwork to solve, including getting the *Brazilian* govt to flip the relevant bit in their own database, handling this Vonovia lawsuit, ordering a new Personalausweis, and changing my name in two dozen contracts and services and registers of various types, basically every institution who didn't accept my DGTI

there's always a reason for things in language.
in English, the reason for the distance between writing and spelling is 95% explained by the fact that words are written like they were pronounced 500 years ago, and modern English speakers refuse to acknowledge or engage with this fact and prefer to pretend the spelling is random or arbitrary, because the alternative would be to admit that the sounds of their language are pretty simple and could be trivially written in a simple way like anybody else.
it's like the thing where English speakers make a big deal of their language having mixed vocabulary from several sources, pretending it's a noteworthy vice or depreciative quirk of the language, as if that wasn't 1) just the way languages normally are and 2) the case for every widespread language in the world.
basically the general trend with English speakers' self-image about English is total exceptionalism thinly masked by a veneer of self-depreciation

she was asking whether "tarjeta" exists in Portuguese. I explained that it does but it's not used for credit cards (however everyone will get what you mean cos people in Portugal are used to Spanish tourists). and that it's literally "small band", but also it sounds archaic or literary for us, we would now say "faixinha" rather than "tarjeta" for a small band. in Brazil "tarjeta" is still used for a type of horizontal door lock, I don't know if that's current in Portugal also.
me: there's a lot like that, like in Spanish you say ¡cierre la puerta! [close the door!] and in Portuguese we say "feche a porta!". but we do actually have a verb "cerrar", it just sounds like something out of a book. maybe with a connotation of emphasis now, like, "close really tight"
me: in a book you might see "a porta estava cerrada", but nobody talks like that, spoken Portuguese is "a porta tava fechada"
me: but that's sufficient that if a Spanish speaker says, cierre la puerta, we can get what they mean ("cerre a porta" is valid Portuguese, just archaic)
