So strange to look at my yard--- all snow gone and plants pushing through the soil--- and to think that there are still harsh winter conditions up there. Yeah, steep ice-- that was a trick ascending in some spots in only microspikes. Should have switched to crampons on the ascent. And, so glad I had them on getting back down. 😀 ❄️

It is still winter at higher elevations in the White Mountains, NH. Here is the view from the summit that I hiked up this time last year. Strong wind, heavy snowfall, and limited visibility. There had been many freeze/thaw cycles before this hike, leaving an icy base with fresh powder on top. I ascended to the summit with only microspikes on, but used crampons for much of the descent. Wow-- it wasn't that long ago that this lake and the ones near it were frozen solid and I was snowshoeing through the surrounding forest on a deep layer of snow. Even snowshoed a bit on one of the lakes. Spring has definitely arrived here-- had a nice hike today in this forest, looping around this lake. A great day to be out! #hiking #nature #photography

It is interesting that we all like to go up to a summit for the great views. But then, in these conditions where the visibility is severely limited, it is a different special experience. It becomes mysterious and magical being up there where you can only see nearby features.

Yes, so amazing and thoroughly enjoyable, Richard. This was an unusual one-day weather window with a large high pressure system over the area with no wind, clear skies, and mild temps (but below freezing). Since this coincided with a holiday week, I had to “share”’ the mountain with others. But we were all stretched out over the 8.5 mile route (13.5km). Had a brief encounter with someone about once an hour, but otherwise was completely alone. 😀 ❄️ ⛰️

Just now returned from a fantastic winter adventure in the White Mountains, NH. Perfect weather and trail conditions allowed me to hike a substantial loop up high -- first ascending to a summit, then hiking a section of the ridge (hiking up and over other peaks), and ending by descending from the last peak. Here is another interesting small feature of the tall frozen #waterfall (85'; 26m) shown at the beginning of this thread. I carefully walked up the partially frozen stream to capture this #closeup at the base of the waterfall. Icicles with an inverted shape (I believe called "ice bells") hang inside an #ice cave and water seen flowing below. #Vermont #mountains #winter

Sometimes I find it difficult to capture the full beauty of a large #waterfall in a single image, such as the 85 feet tall (26m) frozen waterfall at the beginning of this thread. Yes, narrow tracks are an issue, whether it be from cross country skiers or people barebooting. Sometimes I find I can’t snowshoe those sections when the elevated part of the snow is hardened from a previous freeze/thaw cycle.

There are various ways to attach snowshoes to a backpack. I lash mine to the back (paired with teeth facing each other) using two sets of straps to keep them from swinging.

Wrapped up my trip to #Vermont by #snowshoeing part of this mountain pass road yesterday that was closed to vehicles for the winter. I road at night all winter long one year to rehab my knee. Yeah-- cold toes an issue (but I hadn't yet discovered neoprene socks which I want to try now). What I liked the most was how there were no cars on the road and I had the road to myself. Also, really beautiful moonlight lighting up those dark fields sometimes.

As the days get shorter, my end-of-day hikes are nicely transitioning into sunset hikes! This is one of the beautiful ponds that I hiked by today on my favorite local trail. I like how the tops of the trees are lit up and reflected in the pond as the sun sets! @npub1npy…3sf4 Those are frostbite conditions. Have you figured out the issue with your glasses fogging up? If so, you could completely cover your face. I would only consider going out if no wind and good sun, and would only go a short distance. Otherwise, probably best to stay inside.

THIS is my “happy place”! On #backpacking trips, I seek out #streams to camp near. In addition to falling asleep listening to the gurgling sounds of the #stream, I love to have dinner down by the stream, enjoying the sight and sounds of the rushing water as the sun sets. @npub1c5c…644a @npub15dc…ekna @npub15dj…dlgt A combo has worked well for me— full coverage of (mostly) treated clothing, bug net over wide brim hat, sun gloves, plus just a small covering of picaridin around my wrists and around the neck where the bugs seemed to penetrate between layers of clothing. This has worked for me under the worst of bug conditions (June in White Mountains, NH).

@npub1c5c…644a @npub1cqh…4rf7 My biggest concerns when hiking in the rain are water crossings, which may become dangerous at high water, plus scrambling on steep slippery slabs of rock. Not sure if you will encounter those. I choose routes to avoid those situations.
