the 90s recession was bad enough for many businesses that federal tax revenues were declining and federal debt-to-gdp was increasing strongly. There was some justification for reducing fed spending. But instead of slashing distributions to wealth, they attacked the PS to appease those who'd been drinking the conservative koolaid.
Now the LPC is doing it, without any justification at all, when the context is that wealth is doing extremely well while people are suffering increasingly.

I still remember a late 20's colleague crying at her desk after a phone call. We thought her fucking husband died.
But no, after a few minutes of generic consolation she was able to explain she'd finally received permanent status after being a term employee for 6 years.
This was around 1998, many bad times in the PS thanks to Paul Martin and Jean Chretien's cuts in 1995. The economy had been a bit bad in the 90s, both for wealth and for people.

"salary" - you work unpaid OT but if you are absent without sick/vacation, the employer doesn't pay.
In Ontario, the laws & courts aren't really friendly to the idea of "salary"... employment terms always include the expected number of weekly hours, so everything ends up converted to hourly anyway. It's partly the requirements of Employment Insurance law.

About 300ft of cedar hedge trimmed, almost half done.
Have not yet cut through the extension cord with the trimmer. It carries the scars of the last time I did it a large tape blob enclosing wire-nut repairs). As does a 2nd extension cord in the garage.
Hands/arms are like rubber now, so I will wait and do another chunk tomorrow.
Aside from 1 or 2 trims/year it's maintenance free, birds love it, looks great, great privacy and windbreak. Grows like crazy in Ottawa's soils.

need more comms? power? physical stability? There is only one solution...throw another wire on it.
My neighbourhood suffers from "salty pole syndrome" in the early spring, where salt & moisture bridge the insulators and wood pole, bringing the whole mess up to 5000V, frying the comms, killing anyone who touches it, and causing it to explode in a mix of blue electrical sparks, orange wood flames, and green flames from the wood preservative. Good pics if you can catch one.

it's not a normal legal requirement for employees to give any notice in Canada. Pay & benefits must be settled up to the day of resignation regardless of notice, no penalties for lack of notice.
Can be different under a CBA or specific contract terms, but generally it's a courtesy for resignation notice.
Employers HAVE to give 2 weeks notice. Not employees.

I was thinking something more family oriented. Mom works for the public service. Dad works for the public service. All the neighbours work for the public service, except the outsider bachelor who works for a car dealership (killed off in S1E2 - run over)
The street racers could be done like the bottle kids in Trailer Park Boys. Just violent unexplained assaults at random times.

Sun is beating down in #ottawa, very light wind, dewpoint up at 15C...pretty hot. My house faces west and the front yard is a heat trap, quite uncomfortable until sundown. Great in early spring and proper autumn, which is taking a pass again this year.

on food, GDP is neat because included depreciation offsets production, and you can calculate how long it takes to turn over the asset base...not long .. only about 6y. Asset base is burnt down and rebuilt in 6y.
So sure, GDP measures producing some 75y bridges, but it's measuring a lot of 7d bananas and lettuce too.
And it's all market accounting too, so it's swerving all over like fashion.

Mosquitoes VERY aggressive at sundown tonight at the local football field. I put on a decent coating of family-grade bug spray, it wasn't enough.
I may go with 30% deet skin cream tomorrow, but it takes 3 showers to stop smelling...a high price for 90m of bugs.

for squirrel proofing, I use a metal cone baffle on a pole. Baffle is set about 120cm high, and the poles are far enough from trees, fence, hedges etc so that the bastards can't jump over.
I don't put expensive peanuts out until the blackbirds and grackles are gone. I mostly want them to attract crows & ravens. The jays will also eat up 4L of peanuts in 1 day, so I have to be careful.

A recent #Mastodon web UI update has made content-warned or filtered items take up more space and be more intrusive. So I've had to set a bunch of filters to "hide completely" instead of "hide with a warning".
A hidden post used to be just a one-liner, but now its a box with "diagonal warning tape" down the sides... that's... interesting design, but it's worse for me...the "tape" was even black/yellow for a while...seems to be blue/black now...
I'm not going to collide with a post...

there's no particular advantage to an appreciating currency. During that 10y, Turkish real GDP, measured in USD, grew a lot more than it did in Canada.
An appreciating currency makes your currency itself a target of investors, instead of making investments in real things to produce goods & services.
Now, if you charted the Lira against Canadian house prices...now there would be a fun hill to toboggan down

#mastodon follow suggestions are terrible. It recommends accounts with no monthly activity. It also really likes accounts that have 15k followers but only follow 80. It calls these "personalized suggestions". Most of these lopsided accounts have lots of posts that match my post filters.
Not great. The perils of algorithms.
