The Vshojo drama made me think about something... it's a bit of a stretch, but hang on with me.
So there's one thing that religions and Churches usually get credit for. Building communities. Even the Atheist movement acknowledged that one of the big reasons people don't abandon Christianity, even if they don't actually believe in god anymore, is their need to be in a community. And it's the thing I would hear a lot from Atheist figures that we needed to get better at. (Atheists never did manage to build healthy communities. Instead it all went completely to shit).
Well, I've been thinking now... are vtubers the new churches?
Like look at this shit, Ironmouse makes a video, then more vtubers and people covering the drama follow suit, and before you know it, you have a community raising over $1 million for charity. Isn't this one of those things we expect out of churches? To bring people together, to unify under a goal, and do good deeds (charity) together? And it's hardly the first hugely successful charity event vtubers lead.
And I guarantee you there are people of completely opposite sides of the political spectrum in the streams of the most popular vtubers. So they're definitely able to build a community and have people set aside differences for a couple of hours.

We don't have this in my part of Europe. I've seen a couple of such math examples over the years, and... tbh completely honest, I do find some of them as neat examples of how to think differently about math. And I would have liked to be shown some of them as a kid.
BUT, a kid shouldn't be graded on whether he understood and can apply the random common core tricks (which from what I've seen, they apparently are). Just give him 63x9, and let him choose whatever method he wants to solve that.
If he can draw the rectangles on paper, or in his mind, as fast or faster than I can use the traditional method, why stop him from using it? I think it can be useful to show different methods, just in case one of them clicks better for someone than the traditional method, and they are faster then they would have been otherwise.
BUT DON'T waste too much class time on this. Show the thing once, let the kids know they can also do things this way if they like, but don't linger on it. And don't try to grade them on knowing all the methods. At the end of the school year, they really should just know the one that is fastest for them. And just grade the fucking end result.

People under soviet communism weren't able to buy western goods not because they couldn't afford them. Not because the west wasn't willing to export them. And the only way to do that was to forbid their access to alternatives.
Because if the communist subjects get to see outside goods are better, then they might revolt and overthrow the regime. And we can't have that.

In their natural environment, women are in competition with each other over attracting the best man. But feminism gets them to compete with men instead. This tricks the more beautiful and capable women into wasting their energy somewhere else, potentially eliminating them from the dating market, while the more ugly, feminist types are left with less competition. Thus giving them an advantage in the mating game they wouldn't have had before.

Almost two decades ago, I was going through a crisis of faith of sorts. I've always been interested in science. It butted heads with Christianity, and I couldn't figure out what's what.
Having access to the internet, I thought: we're in the age of digital cameras everywhere, and free flowing information. If god is real, and he makes miracles happen, proof HAS to be out there.
So I went looking for video proof of miracles. And I only managed to find the Western equivalent of this.
That's how I started down the path to atheism. People can keep believing in Jesus and god if they want. But I simply can't. After I've seen countless examples of this, there's no way I can look at religion and not think it's the longest running scam of mankind.

Call me crazy, but I think the president of Mexico basically declared war on USA.
As the president of your nation, and the president of all those immigrants into US, both legal and illegal, that are rioting, your responsibility is to call on your citizens to stop protesting, and to urge them to allow you, their elected representative, to negotiate with US on their behalf.
The second you called on your citizens to mobilize, you effectively called on them to act as your military. You infiltrated your army within US borders, and now you're calling an attack against the sovereignty of a nation. You are calling for war. That is not acceptable.
This is one of those moments where I'm glad that I'm not American and that I don't live in USA. That I don't have to personally experience any of this shit. Previous federal administrations, and multiple state governments have allowed a dangerous status-quo to take root. They've allowed, or maybe even intentionally encouraged, the weakening of US sovereignty. And now we're seeing the results, where a foreign president dares encourage anarchists, terrorists and insurrectionists to crate chaos and destruction within your country.
So I'm definitely fucking glad that I'm not dealing with this shit in my life, and I hope Trump sends in the military to impose some quick order. Anything less won't be enough to reestablish long-term order.
The US, and even the entire world, cannot afford this riot to subside in a few weeks, only to start again in a few months, or next year. Nobody can afford that instability. It needs to be ENDED.

The best explanation I've heard comes from women MRAs.
Basically, women are and aren't lying about this. When they're single, they're more likely to pick the guy on the right for a fling, a sexual escapade, whatever you want to call it.
But if they're in the mindset of settling down, when they think about someone they want for a long term relationship/marriage, they will pick the guy on the left, who is still decently fit, but looks like he'll do other stuff with his life other than lifting weights, so he's more likely to be a good provider.
It's basically a rehash of the old alpha/beta male thing. They'll fuck around with the bad boy "alpha", until they decide they want to settle down, at which time they pick a "beta" that is loyal, will provide for them, that may even raise children that aren't biologically his.
Something else to note, which I haven't seen anyone address yet, women's preferences change if they're on the pill. This has been studied. And I suspect it would influence women's behavior into picking the guy on the left, because the pill essentially tricks their body into thinking they're pregnant. So hormones are gonna force them into the "I need to settle down" mindset.

Bruh... I'm not Canadian, and one doesn't need to be Canadian to understand that the situation is very different between Canada and USA on the migration issue.
Canada doesn't have the illegal immigration problem that US has, because they don't share a border with a third world country, like US does. You don't get into Canada by illegally crossing a border, like you do in US. And you can't even get in via boats, like in EU or UK. It's not as easy to get into Canada as it is for US. As such, Canada doesn't get the crime issues from illegal immigrants.
The way you get into Canada is by plane. Which means you need 3 things: a plane ticket, a passport and a visa.
The plane ticket requirements ensures you have a bit a money and ensures your ID gets checked.
A valid passport ensures you're not a known criminal in your country of origin, because most countries out there don't give passports to criminals, so that they don't flee from justice.
A visa requirement ensures that Canada itself does a minimal amount of background vetting. Even if someone goes to Canada with just a travel visa, and overstays their visa, the background check needed to get a visa still ensures that the immigrant is of higher quality than a large amount of illegal immigrants that come to US via the border with Mexico.
You can't appeal to Canadians via immigration simply because the immigrants they get are simply of a higher quality on average. They don't get the same crime problems that US gets.
Trump didn't win twice on migration because "they took our jobs", he won because "they're eating our cats, they're eating our dogs". You won't convince Canadians with "Indians are stealing your jobs", because that wasn't what ultimately convinced Americans either. And as long as Indians don't bring in drugs on mass, don't traffic children, don't commit gang violence, and don't commit massive amounts of other crimes, no Canadian will give a crap that Indians are there in massive numbers, and will just look at you like you're a crazy racist for caring, and they'll ignore you.
Canadians are very privileged, and they may very well be the nation with the most secure border in the world, because of the single act of US buying up Alaska from Russia back in the day. This is why it is ineffective to bring up immigration to Canadians. It will never work for them as an argument simply because the mere existence of USA provides them the best border security in the world by default.

Immigration is not really Canada's top issue... I mean, for fucks sake, they border USA, not Mexico. How many Americans do you know who actually want to move to Canada? They don't deal with immigration the same way America does. So that's a poor example to pick. Every other social justice/woke authoritarian policy, yeah, those are problems in Canada. Immigration? Not so much.
I know people are blaming Trump's tariffs for how things went down, but honestly... I don't think there was ever a real chance for Canada to not vote liberal. It fell from earlier on and deeper down the marxist rabbit hole, so it will be much harder for them to pull themselves back. They likely need to suffer more from left-wing policies until they figure something ain't right.

It feels like a year or two ago when he/she/whatever appeared on Sitch&Adam and basically admitted that he/she/whatever didn't change political views one bit, but only realized that the left needs to adjust signalling to get the moderates on board. I've never seen one that got actual use out of it. I've seen a few in store displays, and they don't have any real noticeable crease to speak of. Maybe slight bumps or lumps, because the screen isn't hard glass, so it's not a perfectly flat surface. They look perfectly usable imo.
But those phones don't get real use, so I've got no clue how they end up IRL.

I've been thinking about something last night. I'm starting to think that this could be it, that what we're experiencing right now is the height of human civilization on Earth.
I think that, because we didn't build up nuclear energy in time, we will fail to make the transition away from fossil fuels fast enough, we'll run out, and we'll reach a point where we won't be able to make enough energy to sustain societies as they are today.
A collapse will come. But that's not the real issue. The real issue is that without an abundance of oil anymore, without that much cheap energy, human civilization won't be able to rebound, and will basically remain stuck to somewhere around steam engine stage. At best we might see steampunk become a reality.
I've been thinking about something similar for some time. Humanity owes its technological advancement to fossil fuels. To forests and critters of countless millions of years ago that died and got buried before they could decompose.
As such, ANY intelligent alien civilization NEEDS to evolve on a planet that has fossil fuels in the ground already. If an intelligent life form evolves before fossil fuels get created through geological processes, or where they don't exist for any other reason, that's it. That's a technological dead end for them. They'll be stuck at a medieval stage, forever.
"But muh solar power" NO! You're not gonna make solar panels from burning wood. If you're struggling to barely melt metal, you're not gonna have the cheap resources needed to experiment and research anything more than a basic axe and a sword.
And remember the social panic there was in the 90s, that we were cutting down all trees to make paper? Now imagine trying to sustain a high population civilization that BURNS only wood for everything.
You are not building a technological civilization off of wood. At the very minimum you need coal, but realistically you need oil. No civilization, alien or otherwise, will EVER make the transition from burning wood to solar panels. Same goes for wind. You think you'll create fine copper wire to make electric engines and generators by burning wood?
Now going back to humanity. If societies collapse. That's it. We don't have readily available oil. The reserves we still have need highly advanced machinery to extract. Machinery that might not survive a collapse, or that we'll lose the knowledge of how to use.
We still have a lot of coal, but I'm not sure if even that is easily exploitable anymore. Can you still find coal with nothing more than pickaxes as tools?
After the collapse happens, there will be no more smartphones, no more computers, no more internet, anymore. Ever. For as long as Earth continues to orbit around the Sun, humanity will continue, but will remain stuck in much more primitive societies.
This is not something I expect to happen in the next decade. Not in our lifetimes either. Could take a few centuries. But I think it could happen.
Our energy needs are growing too fast. First cryptocoin and now AI have been the world's dumbest ideas when we're struggling to deal with finding energy alternatives. And dumber ideas are sure to be on the horizon still.
IF nuclear energy had been abundant, this wouldn't have been an issue. But instead of growing nuclear capabilities, we've decimated them. Now there's talks about a revitalization. But projections for the first batches of new generation nuclear power plants are for like 2050 or something. And that's assuming the political willpower is maintained until then. Which... fucking hell people... western nations can't keep it together for 5 years, let alone decades.
Even if I assume mere stupidity, and not outright malice, the world's political system is essentially trying to kill humanity.
But going back a bit, with energy usage growing so fast, at some point something will collapse. If people start rioting and pillaging AI server farms and solar plants, if people start chaos and revolutions, you think energy plants will survive? You think fragile solar panels will be intact? You'll have South Africa style situations where the infrastructure will be compromised, and left in taters to the point where you can't even use every bit of energy making capacity you have left to create new solar panels, new windfarms, etc.
You won't be able to grow back, because trying to ration energy for basic industry instead of population needs will just get you a free noose around your neck as part of a new population revolt.
And solar panels wear out. So do wind farms. You won't be able to replace them, more and more of them will fail, until you have nothing left and are back to burning wood to stay warm during winter.
If you had an abundance of cheap oil, gas, coal, sure you can build back. Just burn more and more. But you're not building back from solar and wind.
I don't think it will happen within our lifetimes. So unless you care that much about your great-grandchildren, this really isn't something that will affect you. Not something you should care about.
But if you have some deep optimism and hope that one day humanity will reach the stars, if you're like me and hope humanity will exist forever more, discover everything there is to discover, explore all the deep blue and the cosmos, reach the pinnacle of science and technology that we can't even imagine yet... If you're romantic in that way... this is a sobering thought to consider.

Read an article last week, and some guys were claiming we're maybe 2 years away from AGI.
On one hand I doubt we're THAT close, on another it shouldn't take a genius to realize that the pattern seeking approach that LLMs use is what human brains do too, so maybe we're closer than people realize. I wouldn't be surprised if it took years to realize we have an AGI on our hands after the AGI was created.

You just made me realize something. Reducing piracy did nothing to improve the quality of entertainment media.
There's been less piracy in games (thanks to Valve and GoG), movies and TV series (thanks to Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+, etc.), and music (thanks to iTunes and other music streaming), and yet the quality of entertainment has dropped more and more.
Anyone trying to argue that piracy reduces the revenue for the people involved in these productions, and thus leaves them with less money with which to fund good future projects and harming the quality of entertainment, has been debunked.
If anything, there might be a better argument to be made for the reverse. The threat of piracy is more likely to force producers to make good shit, because people are more likely to want to spend money and reward people who make good shit, even if they could get it for free.

Somehow this smells a bit like BS, because this is the first time I've heard anything about black holes requiring anything that could be described as "exotic matter".
Also, the entire singularity problem has kinda been debunked before. You see, if you do the math with Einstein's equations, and assume a static (non-rotating) black hole, you get a singularity as a result of the equations. But to date, all observed black holes have been found to be spinning.
Doing the math on a spinning black hole is much, much harder, but apparently you don't get a singularity anymore from Einstein's equations. You still get an event horizon, a point beyond which the gravity is so large that no light can escape, but underneath that the matter is shaped into a highly dense donut shape. No physics breaking, infinitely small, singularity required.
Of course, Einstein's theory is considered incomplete, and people are looking and hoping for a quantum gravity theory to know for sure what happens in these extreme conditions.

Electromagnetic radiation is studied all the time, and nothing ever comes out of it. So that's gonna be a dead end.
SSRis... while likely too many people take them, I don't think every chronic disease sufferer out there takes them. In general worth investigating their effects more, but I don't think this will help his cause.
I have my doubts about vaccines, since I doubt there's any of them not used in other parts of the world. But if they think they can find a particular unique thing about how US vaccinates people that maybe has an effect, I'm not against doing studies.
My bet would be on processed foods and maybe pesticides.

Do you remember when fact checker sites started being a thing? Cause I remember still being very interested in the Atheist scene when I heard about it. So it would likely have been in a time period when I still thought Obama and the Democrats were the bee's knees.
I remember thinking it was a terrible idea, and that by default you can't have an organization that decrees what is "The TRUTH™️ ". No single person or organization can decide what is true. I just saw it as a infiltration point for corruption and authoritarianism.

They really don't seem to get it. The reason people do all this is because the ads they serve have become more obnoxious, more intrusive, and more stupid than TV ads. (not to mention the borderline illegal or scam ones).
I do remember the days when I was using an adblock extension, but I consciously chose to disable it for YouTube because the ads were tolerable, and I appreciated the site for what it offered.
I know what they could actually do to force people to watch ads, but it seems they're still too stupid to figure it out or implement it. They need to directly inject the ads into the video stream.

Never played them, but they never seemed to be brilliant per say. More like the adventure game equivalent of Call of Duty. Fun enough to shut of your brain for a while, but not enough to get people properly invested. I don't think there are communities dedicating to speedrunning them, doing challange runs, modding them, or the various other things people do with games they love.

Ever since I played around with lucid dreaming about 15 years ago, there's always a tiny bit of awareness in my dreams. It's why I can usually figure out "wait, you're not supposed to do that" when something stupid happens in the dream, before I wake up. And it's likely why I don't get something like hard drives speaking or being happy.
If something really crazy does happen, I basically realize it's a dream, and I instinctively start nudging the dream into rational territory.
But the downside to lucid dreaming for me has always been that such nudging also causes me to slowly wake up. Conscious interventions like "this didn't actually happen, I didn't actually wash my hard drives" work well to calm the nerves and turn a nightmare back into just a dream, but I just wake up fairly quickly after.

Had a dream that I gave my hard drives a bath... literally dunked a dozen HDDs in a tub full of water. A few 2.5" ones somehow had a translucent case, and I could see them being half-filled with water.
What the hell was my brain thinking?! I don't even know if I can call this a dream or a nightmare. The whole thing was definitely shocking enough that, half-way through the dream, my brain realized "what the hell did I just do!". The rest of the dream was me trying to calculate what are the odds that if I let them dry out, that they'll work again.
All I can say is, I've never woken up and be more thankful that it was just a dream.

Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not dead. Sorry to disappoint.
Where was I? I decided to do an experiment. For the past year, I have used a different account, on another instance, under a different name. There I had a policy of not following anyone unless they followed me first, and following back anyone that followed me, no matter what. I wanted to see what's the worst that can happen, how toxic Fedi can become. I wanted to see Fedi unfiltered. I guess y'all didn't disappoint.
Some of you, I've stumbled upon again. Some I got the pleasure or displeasure of following again (because you followed me first). Some of you I barely got to talk to, and some not at all.
The experience started decent enough, the first half of the year was ok, but later on, the experience became unpleasant enough that I started opening Fedi rarer and used it less. In a way, that is a positive in itself, but there are better ways to quit social media. Turns out, if you just follow everybody on Fedi, your timeline has the potential of becoming useless trash very fast.
If you're curious about my alt identity, I'm sure you can find it. There are enough clues out there and I'm not planning on deleting that account or erasing any of my posts. But I will not name the account myself, and don't expect a confirmation from me if you confront me with it. Personally, I'm amazed no one made the connection already.
What will I do going forward? I don't really plan on coming back here, nor on continuing with my alt identity either. I might be here for a day or two, but I'm moving on. Where? Who knows. I'm not planning on telling anyone anyway.
I've met interesting people on Fedi, and I don't expect to forget them anytime soon. But, I don't see much usefulness in Fedi anymore. It was an exciting platform because I met people with views different (mostly more extreme) than what I've seen before. But this has grown stale. And since I prefer anonymity and fading away in a crowd, let's say that too many people for my tastes, on either account/identity, have come to know me.
So I'm gonna start from scratch somewhere else. I haven't even decided where yet, so don't ask.
I laughed with some of you, and I fought with others. I bear no ill will to anyone. I've seen plenty of you burdened with too much hate, so I hope you guys find enough happiness in your lives, so that you forget about hating. I hope all of you get to be happy.
