Taking a moment here to brag and show some appreciation. For a school assignment, the 12yo had to write to a business. With no guidance from me and showing wisdom beyond his years, he decided to write to Home Run Inn Pizzaria.
A couple of days ago, he received a FedEx package from Home Run Inn containing free pizza coupons, pizza plates, magnets, and the nicest note. Some marketing intern definitely earned their pay! Home Run Inn now has a fan for life. 🍕#Chicago #Pizza #Food #DadThoughts

Unless it's a series (and I don't read a lot of those), I try to avoid reading the same author more than once a year. Spread the wealth, I guess? I'm making an exception for Stephen King, since he has two films coming out based on awesome books. I just finished The Long Walk and going straight into the audio for The Running Man, which I think I last read in high school. Earlier this year I did a re-read of Eyes of the Dragon.

I'm re-reading The Long Walk by Stephen King in anticipation of the movie that comes out next month. Even though this story is one of my favorites by King - maybe in my Top 5? - I don't think I've picked it up in a couple of decades. Too long.
Hollywood doesn't always treat King's work with respect (looking at YOU, Stand adaptations... BOTH of you). I think this one is going to be really, really good, though.

Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd is one of those books that makes me wish I kept better notes. I added it to my TBR ~15 years ago. Did a friend recommend it? Was it featured in a magazine? Ran the BTN B1G 5K. A little slower than my usual 5K time, but the course was VERY congested. Still had fun and weather was perfect.
Applied for a new job/promotion at work. Wish me luck.
Finished my library's summer reading program. Got my t-shirt and my pick of a free book. I was NOT expecting to find a brand new copy of James by Percival Everett on the cart... the selection tends to be stuff nobody wants. I think I got the last one!

I discovered Stewart O'Nan when he collaborated with Stephen King on Faithful, their memoir of the historic 2004 Red Sox baseball season. Then I had the opportunity to briefly speak with him as part of my job - I helped him sort out a discrepancy with his hotel reservation at the 2011 ALA conference and he was very nice on the phone. I don't read a ton of graphic novels, but for some reason I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly wound up on my TBR a while back, and I'm glad it did. It definitely has my attention and I just discovered that it was adapted into a movie! One more thing to occupy my time. 🙂

Two years ago I listened to the audiobook Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz, which turns out to be the SECOND book in the "Horowitz's Holmes" series. I liked it so much (Sherlock Holmes is hard for me to not like) that now I'm getting around to The House of Silk, which is the first.

Reading two (not intentionally) short story collections this week: Things We Lost In The Fire by Mariana Enríquez (ebook) and The Low Desert by Tod Goldberg (audiobook). The first collection seems pretty dark; I think I'll need something more lighthearted when I'm done with it. Goldberg is reliable for his crime/underworld stories. About halfway through the audiobook of The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, a tale of suspense taking place in Amsterdam in the 1600s. There's already been one twist, and I'm looking forward to at least a couple more.

Just finished Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, which of course was the inspiration for the hit Broadway show. Truly a fascinating life, where sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. It makes one wonder what might have happened had Hamilton's life not been cut short.
This quote stood out to me:
"His faith in Americans never quite matched his faith in America itself." It was like he had a crystal ball.

Started The Swallows by Lisa Lutz, and I'm already 20% into it and liking it so far. It's like an anti-Dead Poets Society, but where DPS kind of ignored private school cliques, - all the students seemed to mostly get along - Lutz leans in hard and it's far more interesting (don't get me wrong: I ❤️ Dead Poets Society). It's officially #baseball season, so I thought it was as good a time as ever to read Two In The Field by Darryl Brock. It's the follow-up to his time travel/baseball novel If I Never Get Back. I read the first book in my adolescence, and then enjoyed it again about a year ago, which is also when I discovered the sequel.
Admit it: "time travel" and "baseball" is not a plot combo you've seen before! Somehow, Brock makes it work.

I was in Madison, Wisconsin, USA this week. Took a side trip to the House on The Rock. It's the setting for a pivotal scene in a certain fantasy novel that has since fallen out of favor with me.
1. It is exactly as the author described, which is to say, it is an EXPERIENCE.
2. I'm glad there were other people visiting. That is not a tour I'd want to take solo. So many creepy dolls, and a few clowns for good measure.
3. I should visit more #literary locales.

Even if it has not been an extended length of time, a brief synopsis should be SOP as a service to a reader that is being loyal to the series.
Stephen King did this very well with The Dark Tower series. I can't think of any other authors that make similar efforts, but then, I don't read a lot of series (in part for this reason). #bookstodon @npub1ny7…uv57

I started The Changeling by Victor LaValle.I know it's classified as "horror," and I have a sense of impending doom, but nothing is really all that scary... yet. I know something bad is going to happen at some point, and I feel like I'm not going to be ready for it no matter how much I mentally prepare.

I had a rough go with David Copperfield. Added to the DNF pile about 15% of the way through. About half way through The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger is definitely a slow dystopian burn and I'm still trying to figure out exactly HOW dystopian it is. Resources seem limited and barter system is in place, but people are also using cell phones and there's still something resembling a federal govt. (the President is proudly illiterate, so life imitating art or vice versa?) Speech Team by Tim Murphy is definitely not one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I find the main character (Tom Murray - hmmm, is this semi-autobiographical?) to be a bit annoying, and I can't tell if that's how he's written or if it's the audio narration. Maybe both? I was not familiar with the work of Susan Meissner before I picked up my current read, but it seems she's quite prolific and people seem to like her books -- I'm seeing more 4- and 5-⭐ reviews on Goodreads than what I'm used to. So far, The Nature of Fragile Things is entertaining and quick-paced, though the characters are maybe a bit flat. In the book The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep, David Copperfield was given so much love and appreciation that I thought, "Damn, maybe I should read that one." Working through The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss. Pretty sure I added it to my TBR on the rec of someone here on Mastodon, and I am so glad I did. So much great history that I didn't know and plenty of action to keep me interested. Krakauer is very good at what he does. I also read Missoula, where he tackles an extremely difficult topic with eloquent grace and respect.

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is $1.99 today from your preferred ebook vendor. It's an excellent, heartbreaking, and mesmerizing snapshot in time of loneliness, the beauty and danger of great outdoors, and a hidden America in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Probably a book I will re-read again at some point, and I don't re-read much.
In 2007, it was made into a movie directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsh, and nominated for two Oscars.

Finally got to The War For Late Night by Bill Carter. It was released in 2010 not long after the events it describes and still fresh when I added it to my TBR in 2012. Now, a dozen years later, my memory of what transpired is vague at best, but I do vividly remember Letterman eviscerating McCain for ditching his show to do a Katie Couric interview.
I was never a loyal late night tv watcher, and I never really liked Jay Leno.

My audiobook choices have had their ups and downs in the back half of 2024, but I could not be happier to finish out the year with The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry. This one grabbed me right from the get-go and the narration is top-notch. The literary-themed storyline is brilliant and sure to be catnip to any book lover.

Based on @npub1wcy…pu4d's strong case for Perdido Street Station, that's also getting added to my TBR. I have this weird thing though where I don't like to read books by the same author too close together, so I probably won't get to it until next fall at the earliest.

I loved Song of Achilles. Circe too. Miller knows what she's doing.
If you're on a Greek mythology kick, you may as well round it out with A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes. I don't typically re-read a lot of books, but at some point I'm going to make time for that one.

I have high hopes for The Book of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves ("Whoa!") and China Miéville, but for now the jury is still out. Admittedly, I'm not very far into it, but I'm not sure I like the writing style. I think - I'm hoping - it gets better soon.

I feel the fact that #Bluesky is connected to Steve Bannon and Russian state media and cryptobros should be bigger news.
But it's not.
If you search "Bluesky" using a search engine like DuckDuckGo, you'll come across results like "Here's What To Know About Bluesky" (NBC) or "X users jump to Bluesky - but what is it and who owns it" (BBC). One would think the aforementioned connections would be relevant info in a piece like that.
The omission is glaring.

Trick-or-treat report: Weather made for an interesting night. Started at a comfortable 63°F/17°C, dropped to 47°F/8°C in about 30 mins, which normally wouldn't be so bad but also had 45mph wind gusts. Evil Jawa was not as efficient as he could have been, but still finished w/ a decent candy haul. We stopped by #Chicago Bear Kyler Gordon's house, but nobody home. His neighbor on the other side of the cul-de-sac compensated by giving out full size candy bars. 😉🎃🍬 #HappyHalloween2024

Friend: I wonder if the Gulf Coast 90-degree heat and humidity affected the #Bears.
Me: I'd say they were more likely affected by zero running game, a rookie QB still figuring out his role, an overrated HC who should have been let go after last season, and of course, owners who are inept and/or don't care.

Love that book! I've read it twice and the only reason I haven't read it again is because, as you pointed out, it's kind of a doorstop. 🤣
Clarke wrote a collection of short stories called Ladies of Grace Adieu, which is sort of like a companion piece to JS&MN. Similar vibe and style, without the 800 page time commitment. Definitely worth checking out.

I have the Kingsbridge series on my TBR. I remember very well that when the second book of the series (World WIthout End) was released in 2007, people raved about it. "A MUST-READ!" A friend picked it up recently and found it boring.
