I've been teasing that I have another project in the works for the past few months, and I'm VERY excited to finally unveil what has been an incredibly fun collaboration with @npub1l2e…9u6w !

Your work always has such a great use of color and tone. That narrow range of tones for the background and leaves still works incredibly well because you've alternated warm and cool colors. And then you have that much brighter area between the cardinals, as well as a few pops of brightness around the nest.
It's not just the red of the cardinals that draws your eye, the whole background pushes your eye back to them. Just beautiful work!

And to give you an idea, here's a closeup from a project last year that shows how well it holds fine detail.
Doesn't seem like you're going for this level of detail, but you definitely won't have splintering issues with this wood:

Seems like the wood you were using was too soft. Some of my first projects carving wood blocks were very frustrating because the wood I was using was very soft with a loose grain, and it splintered constantly.
Harder wood (Cherry or boxwood are probably the best, but are difficult to find and very expensive) is much better for fine detail. I've been very happy w japanese katsura (which is easier to find and cheaper) lately , it holds fine detail very well.

I think what I like about #TextureTuesday is that the mere awareness of the tag puts me in a more observational mode when I'm out and about. I notice more detail and find interest in things I might otherwise consider mundane or just overlook.
I'm sure I've walked by this wall dozens of times and never noticed this little detail carved into it:
