It's happening all across the West Coast. Oregon is currently the 'worst off' compared to WA and CA. The biggest factor has been how warm these storms are, it's not just rain, but very warm rain, comparatively.
People do not seem to understand the looming water emergency. It's not that we haven't had enough precipitation (we've had PLENTY), it's the lack of cold enough temps for meaningful snowpack to form and remain. Everything that has fallen as snow has melted below about 7000ft above SLE from the warm rain.

That's almost as bad as the truck that lost a container of eels on the 101 about ten years ago.
A truck carrying a few containers of eels could not stop in time for a flagger and launched a container into the roadway, which hit a car and caused a chain reaction of crashes with other cars sliding into the mess and off the road. A single hagfish can create a stupid amount of slime when stressed, like gallons of goobers.
They had to use fire engines and bulldozers to clean off the road.

Nope, more like bridges, fire stations, hospitals, water treatment plants, etc.
I'm currently working on a team to create a state program to shore up our capacity to rebuild without federal support. A lot of consideration goes into these projects, but we are trying to create an accessible program for communities.

I was going to ask if this was as bad as Merbok, understanding that many of these communities are still recovering from that event. Then I saw the mention a few paragraphs down. This reads like a combination of both an impact statement and an executive weather summary. My heart aches for these people.
I work alongside federal recovery staff that work in the region. My state is in the same FEMA region as Alaska, so we get a rotation of the same staff and officials every few years between disasters.
The Typhoon Marbok disaster was and is a mess in terms of a difficult recovery. I've heard many firsthand accounts of how ineffective federal support has been in some cases. I hope that books are written describing the incident. The logistical challenges of recovery policy cooked up in a bunker in DC to prevent cheating the system in the SE US do not translate well into these communities.

I spent last week interviewing folks for a disaster recovery manager job. Most of our candidates were from #USAID.
Hearing about the impactful work they did up until July of this year made our challenges seem miniscule. Stabilizing Tanzania during an ebola outbreak, delivery aid to the Marshall Islands during a drought, surveying Afghanistan during a war (that we caused), helping Sri Lanka overcome major upheavals that began before #covid.
It was very surreal but also heartbreaking to hear about these things that were just swept to the wayside through the rot policy of the regime. I wish we could hire them all.

It gets so miserable on the coast and islands when it gets that hot. We had some hot July days in Aleknagik that I thought were going to do me in. Little shade, short nights, high humidity.
Some lawyers from NY came out to the Togiak area for fishing. They had their 'glamping' gear, top of the line tents and cold weather gear, the works. They had to be rescued by the CG and DNR because they got too hot lol...

I read some posts about missing hikers and false shortcuts and wanted to share a similar experience summiting Lone Peak in Utah with a few coworker friends one summer. My mistakes were: I did not check the weather, bring enough water and food, and I did not bring a map.
We started at about 7:00am from the trailhead and submitted 5-6 hours later, early in the afternoon. From the peak we could already see the thunderheads building out west over the Oquirrh Mountains. I did know how fast the storms blew in and convinced the other two to start heading down.
We made some good progress but as we were slowed in a boulder field, the storm hit us like a cannon. We got to be part of quite the show. The sky turned dark green and we were whipped around like flies by downbursts on an exposed ridge, all the while lightning peeled across the sky.
Nearly deaf from thunder and very disoriented, It didn't take long for us to panic and run for cover heading downhill in a slot canyon.

It feels bizarre seeing news articles about the work I perform. I led this process this time around, my first time as a Coordinator rather than a Team Lead. It was one of the most complex and political damage assessments, probably due to the current climates.
The article does get one thing wrong. Harney County had a lot of flood damages to homes, but Douglas County had more infrastructure impacts, about $8-12 million from the events versus Harney's $1.5-$2m.
Now we wait and see if the Feds will fund this recovery for an area that voted 90% for this Administration. My money is on a denial.

Working on damage assessments for a heavily flooded area of our state. Then I remembered that the headwaters had burned over last summer, meaning increased runoff, faster snowmelt, etc. So I logged on to USDA's Burn Severity Portal... And all the past fire reports appear to have been deleted including recently completed ones from last summer's fires. Many links are dead.
I'll try contacting the forest offices to see if we can get a backup. This is a critical resource for the environment, our health, life, and safety.
I am at a loss, mad, and sad. These actions being taken are making our jobs and lives so hard and truly hurting everyone regardless of ideology.

So, the turmoil this week with the Feds shutting off the grant system continues. My agency is 99% funded through emergency management grants, we draw our payroll costs a month after processing in order to reconcile.
The shutoff made it so that we could not process any draws this week, so that means no disaster grant reimbursements or our payroll costs being reimbursed per our programmatic agreements with #FEMA
We have about 6 weeks until my agency defaults and has to begin furloughs and layoffs.

I've had a lot of conversations around this topic, both at work and at home. Many County Emergency Managers are slightly aware of the gaps and the yearly challenges in forecasting damaging events they create.
As your article mentioned, a similar effort was successful through Maria Cantwell about 15 years ago, can we repeat this process? What would it take?

What a week. My team assessed over $15m dollars in #wildfire damages to infrastructure in 2024, it will likely grow. The fires, such as #RailRidge are still burning. Recovery will be a long process for an area that is both rural and resilient.
Our head firefighting agency reported almost $100m in costs that won't be reimburses through the #fmag program
The numbers this year:
- 1.9m acres burnt
- Yearly avg. is 620,000
- Yearly budget is ~100m
-$250m has been spent on suppression
-State of Emergency - July to October
-17 Conflagration Act declarations (a record)
-12 FMAG Declarations
-1 death, and dozens of injuries of both civilians and firefighters
