For something to be intuitive, you must right away understand how to use something without assistance. That is most definitely not true for Teslas. The first times I was in one the driver ended up opening the door for me. I hate those cars, and avoid them whenever I can.
In any case, the safety claim is not about whether they're intuitive or not, but that they stop working when it matters the most.

Apparently Trump has replied to the Prime Minister of Norway that he doesn't believe him when he explained that the Norwegian government doesn't control who the Nobel Committee awards the peace prize to.
Trump doesn't seem to understand how separation of power works, and that we do not live in a regime where the government wants to control everything from media to theatre boards to elections. We're kindof invested in this thing called democracy over here.

I'm currently rewatching Designated Survivor. I saw it around when it came out, so it's not new to me. It's a political thriller/drama, and the bulk of it aired in 2017-18. It's very progressive in its politics – so much so that it is a little cringe at times – and it stands in very sharp contrast to the the political reality of the time. It feels completely detached from US political reality in fact, which also undermines it.
Still, it's an interesting show and concept.

I've worked in the renewable energy sector for over 4 years now, but as a physicist by education I still get annoyed by how we treats physical units.
My least favourite unit is MWh/day, which is just energy divided by 24!
People have been very sloppy about mixing MW and MWh as well because the market has been divided into 1 hour chunks so they're the same number. Now we've moved to 15 minutes instead, so that assumption no longer holds. A good illustration why making such assumptions is bad!

I decided to finish watching Person of Interest. I was only half way through the series.
The show builds on mass surveillance post 911, and a bunch of ridiculous conspiracy theories. But I have to say it's still a little weird watching the now ±10 years old show in the context of current AI tech, which isn't particularly intelligent and therefore very different, but also in the context of the big tech surveillance industry. Sometimes the stories are a little on the nose. 😅

Having a CERN email address was a magnet for crackpot emails. I did keep some of them though. I too found them fascinating to a point. I had a folder called "Mixed Nuts" where I saved some of them.
Pretty much everyone ignored them, so one guy started to send emails impersonating famous scientists recommending his work.

Any database wizards out there?
I have a table with an ID column. The ID column is unique together with a valid date, so the ID itself is not unique.
However, I also need a name column that is unique under the condition that any given name can only correspond to one specific ID (but not necessarily the other way around).
The database is PostgreSQL. Is it possible to formulate, for instance, a UNIQUE INDEX to achieve this?

In the 1860s, my great great grandfather built this house. It's about 40 sq. m, with a small loft and a boathouse below. It's a stacked timber house and the timber was transported by row boat. It took years to plan, prepare and build.
They had 12 kids in this house. 3 died while young, and 9 lived. His brother also lived there, so they were 12 in total.
Two of the daughters never married and lived there their entire lives. My dad renovated it in the 90s after it had been empty for decades.

I went back to my home town yesterday for an overnight trip, and this moring I drove to the small town my dad grew up in, which sits in a narrow Norwegian fjorth surrounded by steep mountains.
These images are from the innermost part of the fjorth where the two oldest remaining houses stand. My great great grandfather was born there in 1840.
The rock overhang is below a large cliff face, and there are traces of habitants dating back about 6000 years. The site is now a historical site.

A Norwegian court has determined that crypto mining is not "industry", and therefore can be excluded in local zoning plans for industry.
Municipalities in Norway want to exclude them because of the huge energy demands and very few jobs created.
This is a good decision. These data centres are a massive waste of energy and resources.

When watching SciFi series like Babylon 5 in the past I always thought it was a little unrealistic how obvious these fascists were.
Looking at the US today I realise that this isn't unrealistic at all. These people aren't subtle. They don't have to be, because enough people, who'd otherwise agree this was wrong if it happened elsewhere or at another time, will go to great lengths to convince themselves this is fine and it doesn't affect them.

The Trump regime has already threatened legal actions against businesses w/DEIA policies. Now he's threatening universities that allow "illegal" protests, and threatening to imprison, expel or deport students.
This is another step towards the criminalisation of dissent, and full-on fascism. No doubt inspired by Putin. Whether it will get that far remains to be seen, but it's inching closer.
This reminds me of the same steps from the 90s SciFi series Babylon 5.

The source didn't just post the screenshot. They also talked to the owner, which has been refusing service to Russians since the invasion. It has also been reported by Norwegian state media (which is my main news source). But I'll keep an eye out for more info.

I've been doing the same. Even more so lately.
Although I've been skeptical of Proton, I've moved my calendar there. I was already only using GMail for junk, since I stopped using it around 2017. I got rid of their authenticator too.
I still need the account for some things since I have an Android phone. I make sure I'm not logged in to it in my browser though, and use YouTube (if I must) anonymously.
I've also gotten rid of all Amazon subscriptions, and don't use their webshop.

I'm not only slowly removing Google from my life, but also Amazon. It's hard to find a more despicable company to do business with.
I no longer buy anything from their regular store, but I do have a ton of audio books. I used up a bunch of credits (and bought some more) to buy out the remainder of my wish list, so now I'm done for good.
However, I do need a new audio book player for Android. Any good tips? There are so many really bad ones!

I've arrived at Wormhole X-Treme!, the 100th Stargate SG-1 episode. It's definitely a favourite among the sillier episodes. They do make fun of many of the goofs and plot issues of the series, like why you can phase shift to walk through walls, but don't fall through the floor. 🤔
Next up is Proving Ground, where they're training new people. I do feel like yelling "forget the gua'uld, she's a cylon!" when watching it though. 😄

Any of you open source people come across Latta AI? A tool that claims to want to help developers fix bugs in open source projects.
Someone suggested a patch generated by this tool for a feature request on my project. The patch is a poor implementation of the request (unusable), it breaks two existing features (i.e. adds two bugs), and leaves redundant code. Not exactly impressive.
I hope we're not gonna get a ton of AI bots making BS pull requests to repos now?

Stargate SG-1 does their version of Star Trek's "transporter accident" trope as well. The stargate is a sort of transporter sitting on a worm hole, and Teal'c does get stuck in the memory buffer in one episode.
They also do a couple of the "beam out" at the very last second to save the day, but for most of the series, they don't have access to that technology.

As all shows, Stargate go through their SciFi tropes (I believe it is compulsory), and this is their time loop trope episode. A very good execution of the trope, and Richard Dean Anderson gets to be extra goofy in it. 😀
They also do some fairly decent parallel universe trope episodes, which is by far my least favourite trope. Star Trek does it waaay too much.

Speaking of the Ancients. They do like to mess with time, and I love the episode where they activate one such device and get stuck in a time loop. Perfect chance to do things you wouldn't be allowed to do. Like play golf in the gate room!
Brad Wright, one of the creators of the series, wanted to find an excuse to play golf at the stargate, and this is the episode where they made it happen. 😁

Someone told me yesterday of a minutes app for meetings they'd found. Knowing how these apps work, I checked the security policy. I got my fears confirmed. It collects data and share it with 8 third parties, including use for ads & analysis.
I showed her this, and said she should probably get consent from others when using the app. Today she told me she'd uninstalled it and thanked me for the warning!
We can't expect people to figure this out. We need better regulation.

The depressing part is that climate policy is often very unpopular, and politicians are nothing if not morally flexible and inclined to short-term thinking.

Back when I first wrote text processing code in the 90s on my Amiga 1200, I always used the ¤ symbol as a placeholder character for splitting and replacing to exclude things I wanted skipped without affecting character count. It was available on the Norwegian keyboard, and practically never used in text.
Recently I discovered that Unicode has two "Not a character" symbols perfect for the same usage: \uFFFE and \uFFFF.
They can be really useful!

I absolutely believe he wants to do the things he said. I hope he will not be able to and be limited by the fact that his ideas are often detached from reality. I also hope the checks and balances will limit him, but now he knows how to deal with those. But people who think he will moderate himself for any other reasons than these, are plain delusional. We saw how he behaved last time.

Not to mention the forced restarts. At work they push updates with a 2h restart countdown. It *always* disrupts work. Sometimes at critical times. I hate it so much!

I haven't made progress on my novel in a month. I tried to write yesterday, but got distracted with my world building instead, so not a total loss.
I have the plot points of act one and two all mapped out, and a pretty good idea of act three. But right now I'm stuck trying to get the middle part of act one done. I have to introduce my world and my characters, and get the story to the point where the core story kicks in. I just can't bridge the gap!
I'm sure it will come to me.

I guess no one seriously expected the Democrats to stop enabling war crimes. Neither side in US politics would do that. The US has always put itself above international law.
