3. I am sickened by what happend to BlackTwitter and I don't want it recur

As this conversation is spiraling a bit I want to make a few things clear:
1. I'd like Mastodon to be MORE inclusive and bring in more voices
2. Some people don't seem to want that
3. This is core problem to solve: How do we let more in, but not "pollute" your feed?
4. The solution is NOT "gatekeeping", revelling in the fact that AI journalists aren't welcome
5. This is the same reason we lost "Black Twitter" when it came over in 2022
Yes, a lot of you don't want AI posts in your feed (or pick any other topic) but the solution isn't to keep "AI People" from joining Mastodon, any more than it is keeping marginalized communities off of Mastodon.

Is #mastodon becoming an echo chamber? This post from @nprofile…a6hr has me questioning our community. The Mastodon team is finally getting some traction, the product improvements are increasing, The #UX is improving, yet people posting on multiple platforms are making comments like this. It's confusing.
I *know* people here don't want this to be a classic social media-clone but we'd *like* journalists to be here right? They aren't coming with examples like this!

Can anyone recommend how to find older posts you've made? I'm trying to search "scottjenson KEYWORD" but I'm hardly getting anything. Perplexity actually was able to find things better than Mastodon.
Maybe there is a utility app I could use? I'm even willing to download ALL of my posts once a year to maintain my own archive...

It's actually why (personally, I'll add) I'm concerned why encryption may take a while (the Mastodon team is very thorough and would not release a rushed version of this) This is why my original post really had nothing to do with "should we add encryption" but was rather "while we're waiting can we at least make some improvements?"

I'm trying to understand if Mastodon, by implementing this is likely to replace Signal usage for many people? I don't think it will so I'm trying to understand WHY you'd need it in Mastodon when you just use an app that specializes in this.

My point is that encrypted communication is very valuable, but it's usage is quite distinct from microblogging. I'm trying to understand who needs it WITHIN Mastodon (vs just switching to an app that specializes in and likely will do a better job if I'm honest)

@nprofile…vwxc exactly! For me PMs are a convenience. I don't personally need it. But there are folks working on it in a FEP but my understanding is that it is fediverse wide not just Mastodon (as it should be!)
Given how hard it'll be to do this I'll like to clean things up and not wait for the more secure option (especially if most use cases don't require it)

There is a TON of improvements we could make to Private Mentions (often called DMs on other platforms) e.g.
* getting them out of the public timeline
* Having a stronger notification tied to the Private Mention tab
* (amount other things)
But here is my MAIN question: How critical is it that these message are encrypted? I'm not against encryption! It's just complex and will take time. If we were to make some UX changes as a first pass WITHOUT encryption would you be OK with that (at least for now?)
If you MUST have encryption, that's fine, please do me the favor of replying explaining why you need it.

@nprofile…9nqv Oh, I'm afraid to tell you that it is actually VERY broke. That's why I'm exploring this. I appreciate it's not broke for you. But we've got lots of user feedback that this is overly complex and off putting to many new users.
But it's also VERY clear that changing this for EVERYONE forcefully would be a big no-no. I'm not suggesting that. I'm just trying to say if this was an OPTION, would people like it?

To improve the account creation process of any FOSS tool would require simple data collection about where they drop out during the sign up process. There is no account for this so there is nothing to log that is attached to a person.
Yet.... Most FOSS people are adamant that this data should not be collected. Why? There is zero personal info. It's meant to help the project.
Is the reluctance basically a "slippery slope"? E.g. never give an inch?

I see this type of #UX mistake all the time. People use a control in the wrong location and have to create high energy signs to 'fix it'.
The first image has the button effectively *behind* you vs the normal placement of having it *next* to you. This one physical layout difference makes the signage so much simpler and intuitive.

I'm sorry, but making a mistake THIS SIMPLE just undercuts every bit of trust I have with the product. This should just be a database look up.

Google's latest layoffs on the Chrome team really hits hard. They are letting go of people that desperately want to keep the web open. You can hate on Google on you want (I'm with you!) but the people on the Chrome team were amazing and only wanted what was best for the web.
This was so incredibly short sighted and stupid (and ultimately counterproductive)

Is this better than reading a book? Of course not!
Have I deprived the authors of income? Yes!
Am I significantly more enlightened than I was 30 minutes ago? Well, yeah!
I have serious reservations about using LLMs stealing the work of others. But If this could be incorporated into the purchase of a digital version of the book, I'd find that very helpful.

It gave me a detailed outline of the book and I asked follow up questions and clarifications. Something it said didn't make sense to me and asked more about it and got a very detailed and helpful answer. I got a very good understanding of what the book is about and why it was so impactful.

I even took notes (like I do with many books) so in the end, I have frankly MORE captured than I would normally do after reading a book. I do this because I usually forget most of of a book years later (which is very irritating) and the fact that this process gave me MORE notes was intereting.

The point I'm struggling with is that reading a book is WORK and that's what makes it impactful. How I make sense of it *is* what makes it work. What I just did with ChatGPT is a pale version of that. But it is an adjacent experience to reading. We can use LLMs like we do books, it just takes a bit more effort. (which is the whole point)

#Mastodev Is anyone else sick and tired of opening up EVERY SINGLE content warning button when I read a long thread? I just gave up on a thread I was reading. It was just too much trouble.
I'm not against CW but I'm against bad #UX. If I open a CW in a thread, is it that hard to open them all up? This is a win/win: CWs are still respected and I can read a thread in peace.

The biggest problem with this rush to replace jobs with LLMs is that they all have a very naive view of what "the job" is. Reducing a very human process with an LLM, which even if it works (which is usually doesn't) still misses out on the very human cost of using such a dehumanizing process.
This was well documented in the 80s with "The Social Life if Information" by JS Brown. We've seen this naivete so many times, it's expected at this point.

#LLMs feel *exactly* like crypto did in 2017, with nearly daily articles about how it can't possibly work, and a die hard community earnestly pleading "but you just don't UNDERSTAND!"
The main difference is that there *are* reasonable use cases. They're just far smaller than people want to admit.

I arrived in St Kitts last night. Their immigration form is a web form in some weird shell running on an unknown OS on a crap laptop. Even moving the cursor and typing was painful.
People were lined up behind 3 machines as it was so slow. I heard someone say, "You have to help me, I can't do it" It's #UX disasters like this that make my blood boil. So much human misery and frustration that could be avoided so easily. I'm guessing just avoiding using a $200 laptop would solve 80% of the issue.

@nprofile…65al As I said in the blog post, you have to use a Pixel 7, 8, or 9 (normal or pro models) A 3a is far too old and won't support this new haptic. In fact any A-Series phone (which have a reduced cost haptic motor) won't work.

Many think this is a nerdy issue but it is a fundamental one, tied to liberating our tech stacks from advertising and overly greedy tech bros. The web is most certainly NOT dead, it's actually quite amazing thank you very much. We just have to actually use it properly.
That, and get iOS to stop cowering behind WebKit (and faux privacy concerns) and actually allow some browser competition on iPhones.

@npub1t8u…c7sk It's tempting to make fun but I'll cut them some slack:
1. One reason to get rid of the home button was to go full screen
2. Getting rid of ports/buttons initially was about getting a P68 rating
Keeping a full screen remains the same value so I don't see changing direction on that. But button tech has improved (mounting and capacitive sensing) so watre/dust ingress is no longer a problem.
Techniques change, previous decisions can morph.

I've asked this in the past but things are changing quickly.
If you post on multiple platforms, how are you doing it? I'm using #Fedica which works fine but what is hard are the replies. Posting is easy, replying is hard.
On top of that I'm getting very little traction on BlueSky/Threads. Curious where other people are getting engagement.

I've just read someone describing their data as "post-cloud" and I like it!
It's not a binary point. I'm still a big fan of the open web but the idea that much of my data could be stored locally (and yes backed up to a service of my choosing) is appealing. It's not anti-cloud but instead up-ends the power distribution. It's my data, local first. What I choose to do with it is entirely on my terms.

Is anyone else noticing their posts often have just 1 or 2 words weirdly incorrect? My theory is that this is 'auto correct' firing a bit too aggressively. These changes are harder to catch as they are spelled correctly so there is no red underline to give you a heads up.
I'm finding I have to reread my posts VERY CAREFULLY now or nearly every post will have something wrong with it. Unintended consequences of 'helpful' tech? Surely this has been studied/discussed by others?

I think this sums up the culture here pretty well. People just LOVE to tell you how you've got it wrong. This ESPECIALLY applies to posts that aren't even TRYING to be opinionated. There is just this vocal contingent (sometimes german? *always* male) that is hell bent on making sure there isn't "Someone wrong on the internet"

I'm starting to feel that #Mastodon is doomed to be superceeded by Threads:
1. Most people don't care, 'winning' is "capitalist claptrap"
2. It's defederated, there is no one to make key decisions
3. It's STILL not figured out moderation, this place still isn't safe

I've heard of the salt and pepper shaker museum for a long time. It was a bit overwhelming, over 20,000 pairs of salt and pepper shakers. Nearly everything was over the top, was hoping to get a modern collection of minimalist shakers but this was mostly kitchy. Still fun!

My other point is that nearly everything I did was quick and cheap. You can improve quality for free! That's why I worked within the hardware constraints to show how easy it is to make improvements with nearly zero time/cost impact.
Yes, this was a trivial example, people 'eventually learn" but that's not the point. UX is about making things effortless, not survivable. When it's nearly free to do this, why would you choose NOT to?

I am so tired of Tech Solutionism that sees every social issue as something to be fixed with software. To claim keyword filters or blocking is all you need to fix this issue is worse than naive, it's dangerous as it places the burden on the person being attacked. As a privileged old white man, I face none of this. But I can at least support those being attacked and call out this bankrupt and lazy ass thinking.

I've been rather vocal about this in the past. So much so that I wrote about the costs and how fixing it is nearly free. I'm trying (and failing) to understand why this continues

For consumer appliances, the #ux bar is so low that when you come across a reasonable one like the Breville here it feels like a cool breeze.
It is so damn easy to make devices easy to use as the good examples are everywhere. There just is no excuse.

It's clearly useful for self contained computational tasks, but would you do something like this for browsing social media, reading content, analyzing data?
The limiting factor, in the medium term, appears to be how well #LLMs can integrate with a) all of my data and b) all of my apps. In a sense, I'm treating my apps as "output widgets" that allow me to display the data.

It's just about closing that loop from chat-> action even faster. Now basing this on Web/Glitch is just the obvious next step, doing this on my desktop or mobile to get 'bespoke apps' seems worth exploring.
Now this is making a few assumptions (e.g. the code runs correctly 99.9% of the time) The other assumption is that this apps-for-me actually scales. 2/4

A friend was telephone scammed and was told by the #Apple store they was most likely hacked because they used #Chrome. They strongly encouraged them to switch to #Safari.
This seems very suspect to me. I appreciate many here don't like Chrome but is Safari magically more secure?

You are NOT looking for a UX designer, the correct term is UNICORN.
I wouldn't touch this job with a 10 foot pole, they clearly don't understand UX design (or are too cheap to understand you need more than one person to build a product)
To be fair, a UX designer that knows a bit about CSS and has some passing understanding of HTML/JS is an asset! My point is that you don't replace your frontend engineer with a "UX Designer"

Please god, why does this happen every single day of my life?
Paste _between apps_ should not honor formatting by default. Of course there should be an option to 'paste with formatting'
How this #UX pattern became the default is baffling
