I got absolutely sick of screwing with a few modern computers and decided they're absolutely cursed so I pulled out an old computer to play with, and it reboots when you try to initialize the CD-ROM drive, but it also won't recognize the hard drive without a CD-ROM drive installed.
So it turns out all computers are just cursed.

Err, so anyway, my stupid question,
What do I do, what does this mean, am I wasting 384k of RAM, and why does it work (or not work, as the case may be) this way.

2026-05-29 05:06:38 UTC

Hey so I have a stupid question
I have a 386sx computer, with 1MB of built in RAM, and 1MB of SIMM RAM. In the BIOS, it shows the first 640K of built in RAM as base, obviously, but it will only accept 512k, 1024k, 4096k under extended RAM. Which suggests the remaining 384k of built in RAM is going unutilized. Unless I turn on "Remap shadow RAM", then that 384K shows up under "Remapped RAM"
But it won't let you turn this on if you have hard drive type set to "custom" or "auto", for some reason

I feel like if every developer had to download all the dependencies for their project at 20KiB/s, projects might finally stop having hundreds of dependencies just for simple utilities.

Wait, hold up, you can steal all of someone's money, from a locked iphone, in mere seconds, and have been able to for years and years and years,
And I'm supposed to believe that mobile OSs are more secure than desktop Linux or BSD?

Not even rocket scientists can get it to work.

Fall down the stairs.
Get kicked by an alien.
Fall into and then back out of an alternate dimension.

I've been reading up on, and it looks like DNS over HTTPS _does_, but then TLS actually provides it's own unencrypted path that can be snooped, although it looks like there have been efforts to encrypt that as well, although there appears to still be debate as to how well it's been done. And plus there are still IP addresses, though there's debate about how well the sites you visit can really be tracked through those these days, and I think I'm too deep plzhlp

2025-11-22 03:02:11 UTC

Right, except for two things. First of all, I think for home users, switching windows to hide stuff from someone looking over your shoulder is probably one of the single most important things for privacy. And second of all, it speaks to _woefully_ unprotected video RAM, which I would argue is genuinely very bad for security.

2025-11-22 01:42:19 UTC

Listen,
Until computers stop showing my desktop, task bar, and whatever I had open, for a second before showing the screen lock whenever I wake them up, and stop showing snippets of other windows for a second when I switch windows,

I refuse to accept that I must accept crappy UI changes, the elimination of backwards compatibility, deprecation of hardware, and forcing all dev efforts to be perpetual or fade away, just because "oh, well, we just realized this attack is _technically_ possible, and we're gonna make that _your_ problem now"

Automatic volume control has always sounded like a great idea. Stop loud noises from blowing out your eardrums while keeping dialog audible. I never understood why everyone hates it.
Until I finally heard a common automatic volume control.
It still plays the loud noise just as loud, but then turns the volume of the following dialog down to inaudible levels.

What's _really_ sad is that a desire to have sex and a desire to care for children _are not linked what so ever_ so the people most likely to have children are honestly kinda the people who most shouldn't. Lest the first sentence rear it's ugly head.
This is sure one disturbing planet we've got here.
