A reminder that literal children use git forges like GitHub and Codeberg. It will generally be obvious, because they will use excessive amounts of emojis and emoticons and they'll lol and joke and most of all, they'll have a lot of self doubt.
Do NOT be a dick to them!
If they're failing to do something, politely and kindly help them to do it the right way.
If they have self doubt, explain to them that none of us know what we're doing and remind them that the beauty of FOSS is that you can learn in public and get tips from people from all over the world.
Don't preach that "meritocracy" bullshit at them.
Don't talk about "wasting your time".
Don't discourage them.
Be nice. You are the adult in the room, and there's a non-zero chance you are a role model to them. Do not crush their spirits. You have a responsibility as a FOSS maintainer to make your project a safe and welcoming space to new comers and that includes kids.
Do not be rude and destroy their dreams like some kind of monster.

@nprofile…d0yj As a Fallout fan, I can't disagree. It's literally based on old school white dystopian future, and like, I still loved it when I was younger, but these days I feel bad playing something that sort of glorifies nukes, for instance. It just feels... wrong... I still like retro future, but you know, you need to take it in critically (you as in the royal you, not you as in afreytes).
I'll admit, I haven't finished Skyrim, as I have a harder time getting into DND/high fantasy type things in general because I feel so saturated. There's always exceptions, but it wasn't my personal cup of tea. Not dissing anyone who likes it, but I think the thing that bothers me is that this meme in particular feels racist towards West/South Asian people in particular. Weirdly enough, Animal crossing has a similar character who is a camel and also speaks with English that is grammatically incorrect. It just feels weird given that there are plenty of people who are fully integrated into towns throughout English speaking places that speak perfect English. It's a choice and not one that feels comfortable you know? It feels like when people say "can you kindly do the needful" to make fun of people in Indian tech support. It just...breeds people with bad intentions doing stuff that makes me suss of them.

If I haven't blocked the person though, its probably not personal. A great example is someone into a kink I don't like personally, or a sport I don't like. Its not anyone's fault. Just an incompatibility.

@nprofile…3q9y It's been really good as far as I can tell! I have not done any sort of benchmarking (in part because I do no know how), but I guess one thing I would say is that that I did not like the stylus they sold on their website, it felts a little weird from both a latency perspective and that it was one of those styluses that has a tip that moves up and down when you press on it, kind of like a chalk pen, which I found really weird and couldn't get used to. That's why I bought the HP Tilt Pen thing, because the tip feels more like an apple pencil, which is to say hard and stable. For finger latency on the tablet directly, I can't notice a thing though. Also the screen is beautiful. If you like reading comics, it's honestly lovely.
I guess another tip I'd say is that the keyboard they sell that it attaches to is very flimsy and I'm not sure it was worth it. The trackpad often doesn't work with it either. That's fine for me, because I rarely needed the keyboard after reinstalling and setting up debian the way I wanted it, and I didn't intend for it to be laptop replacement, but it is a very expensive tablet, so it's something to keep in mind. It's also a weird size, so if you don't like their case, the best you can do is just get something it slips into, because folding and stand type cases will be difficult to find.

:krita: People who use krita with a stylus that has two buttons, I have a question:
My first button, if I hold it down, switches to a second brush, which I love, but I don't know how to set what that brush is? Do you know how to do that? Please comment! I'm confused by krita docs. :boost_ok_gay:
Is there a way to set a little icon in the toolbar that shows the second brush? I see there's already a default one for the first brush, but I don't see how to add the second brush to the toolbar :thinkies: (I did discover the pinwheel thing, and that's awesome, but secondary to my goals 🙏)

There used to be a Twlight Zone marathon on TV every year, and since my birthday is New Years Eve and most kids couldn't come to my birthday party as a kid, I watched it every year, so I've seen a ton of it, but I don't know many of the episodes by name.

What is missing from mastodon moderation tools? (Genuine question)
As a mod myself, I just wish it would save a screenshot of an offensive post even if I suspend a user or domain. Other than that, it seems fine to me, but I see people vaguely say "mastodon needs better moderation tools", but they never elaborate. What is missing? (Genuine)

@nprofile…args well, I live in the basement level apartment of a row house built in 1880 in Amsterdam, NL. My apartment sits about half underground, such that my only window in the living room, is at my eye level, which is the street level outside. You have to go down a few steps to get in, so we always deal with moisture issues. Amsterdam has swamp like conditions during the non-winter months, and it's only gotten worse as climate change has worsened. The silverfish and ants have been here from day 1 since I moved in 5 years ago. I've alerted the landlord from day one and they have sent exterminators, which have put poison everywhere and it typically results in the visible ones no longer being visible for a few months before both come back stronger than ever.
We mostly see them around the bathroom, and the vent broke about a year ago and the landlord still hasn't fixed it, so maybe that's been worsening the problem? Last year was the first year we finally broke down and bought a heat pump that can also do dehumidification, but that only works in the living room, and doesn't reach the back of the apartment where the ant problem is the worst. Next to the bathroom is also where the little laundry nook is where we have one of the combined washer dryer units where it's a single machine that has two settings for wash/dry. Maybe the whole area is just too damp? The ants and silverfish are both only really a problem during the warm months, so for the past 4 or 5 months, I have only seen a couple of very baby silverfish, and otherwise not found any ants, but just yesterday, our bathroom sink had 6 ants and I tracked them down to a little hole outside of the bathroom door.

@nprofile…args so I have been thinking of you as I deal with bugs in my house. I have a carpenter ant issue. They are eating the walls and flooring. What would you do? I also have a recurring silverfish issue. Do I... Catch the silverfiah and let them go into the ant holes? Can I lure the ants to leave so they don't destroy my apartment? Do I catch the cob spiders and put them next to the ant holes?
The ants are all over the house and I don't think I've been bitten, but they leave little piles of drilled through wood and poop? places and I have to clean it. I feel bad killing bugs, but I worry the wood chewing ants will cause structural damage over time. :blobhaj_thinking:

Do we not have that anymore anywhere in the USA? This was the case both when I lived in New York, Louisiana, and Texas, but I haven't been in a school that required that since 2010, and now I live in the Netherlands, so I have no idea what's going on anymore.

Can anyone recommend a vegan podcast similar to Total Liberation? I stopped listening to them ages ago because they came out hard as SWERFs (they even did a whole episode supporting an org that works with the cops to interrogate sex workers in a church basement).
I love learning about how veganism overlaps with other forms of oppression, but not at the cost of throwing sex workers under the bus. I want to learn more about vegan history and also how to commit better to solidarity while advocating for veganism.

I use rainbow testtube shot glasses for keeping my herb cuttings (mostly basil and Thai basil) as well as green onions alive until I need to use them. I bought this set for €7 at a party store, and they're cheaper than gardening testtube sets. They also just look cute :pan_frog:

@nprofile…6phh so the way it works is that there's just a serial number on the current chips we use, and the database these companies maintain just map the serial number to your name and address. I think we should just put the name and address directly on the chip itself. We shouldn't need a third party app or service to store this info. A quick search and it looks like most chips are also readonly :(
Someone in reddit did mention that rarely some chips are just T5577 and can be overwritten with whatever, and since they're not password protected, there's nothing stopping you from changing the data, but we should probably have some security for changing the data, but that could be a city level thing where the city can just unlock it for you for like an hour while you do whatever after you prove you own the pet. I would love anyone else's opinions here though!

I know I can scan turn with my flipper, but I've never thought about the chip itself, just running something open source. I personally consider the microchip the equivalent to a name tag, so I shouldn't care if others could easily read the data.
